Didn't really have any contemporaries, but it was a fine enough rifle for the role it had. Definitely not one of the most important, of the period or otherwise.

I guess its kind of similar to the L86 LSW in the sense that they're both mag fed machine guns that can also double as long range marksman rifles

4x, the ZF4. You're thinking of the ZF41, which was issued mostly on K98ks.

Not all FG42s got them, but then again, considering how few were made anyway, it's kind of a wash.

it was a good rifle but i don't really see what makes it important.

Besides being absolutely critical to keep well ammoed in Wolfenstein this gun was not that important
