Have no Frogsurp. Have Frog adversarialsurp.

I would like a Lebel Mle.86 M93 and a Berthier Mle.07-15 infantry rifle. Haven't seen any locally in years.

Wouldn't want to assault a trench with this thing; the extendo-mag has a very tenuous hold on the triggerguard.

I have a few Arisakas, my most recent one I bought I got for a bargain because is has a bad ring in the barrel.
Now Im thinking of rebarreling and rechambering it to 308, however keeping the most I can original like not modifing the stock, keeping the original sights and bolt.
The exterior is 7/10, and no mum on this Arisaka.
Your thoughts on this guys.

So I got 14 measly pieces of Lebel brass in a package deal. I want a Lebel one day, but it won't be anytime soon, so I don't need these. Anyone want to trade? I'd trade straight up for 7.5 French, 8x56r, 7.7 Jap, or 30-40 Krag brass. If not, I'd like 20 cases of 8mm Mauser, 7mm Mauser, or .303 Brit.

USPS shipping should be only like $3, and padded envelopes are under $1 at Walmart.

The history, (former) cheap price and loving with buddies also collecting helped. And the thrill of the hunt... going into a new pawn shop, seeing a Finn mosin priced low out of ignorance. Really the thrill of the mispriced or good deal. My most memorable gets:
Matching gew98 for $75 with bayonet
Real jungle carbine for $150
Ex pem mosin I resnipered
Like 9 arisakas under $125
10 m44s under $125
Persian mauser $200
Albanian sks $250

I get warm feelings when I hold a gun that is 120 years old, and still shoots as well as it did when it was made in Germany in 1897. That's not something you get with an AR or an AK or a Glock. I love the history behind them, and I always wonder what my rifles have seen in their long lives, what wars they might have been in, or if they simply sat in storage for over their whole existence. If only milsurps could talk.

It's an early 27th series made by Tokyo Juki Kogyo. The first 5-6000 were made with formerly rejected stocks. That's why it has the older style recoil lug and it retains the older inletting and screw holes that was just filled in with dowels.

That's a fun factor, too. Scouring pawnshops looking for a deal on "grandpa's old gun I don't need."
I worked in my dad's shop in high school and before I went to basic, it was a constant stream of guns that "I need to get rid of to pay for xyz." I picked up an all matching M44 for $25 and a Winchester 1894 for $75.

Unfortunately, I didn't make much money then, and between ammo and chasing girls, I didn't buy nearly as many guns as I should have. Then Obama happened, and I started trying to buy whatever new rifle I wanted, you guys know how those years were.

>>34770765

Anyone know what a 7 pointed star with an A in it means on a no1 mk3? The star is immediately after the mk3 on the gun if that helps.

It's a BSA dated 1911. When day breaks I'll try to get some pictures if needed.

how much rifle ammo did the average soldier carry in WWI/II? im having trouble finding a concrete number for each country. im sure just like today soldiers carrried more than the standard combat load but i cant even find out that.
>>
>>34772939
It would usually be around 30 or 40 rounds easily gotten in their pouches, with another 60 or so rounds not as easily gotten. If you're doing a major assault you'll probably carry a lot more in disposable cloth bandoliers.

I got pretty lucky. A pawn shop just changed hands and hadn't switched prices yet, so there wasn't a price on the gun, so they told me to make an offer and they accepted $150. It's missing the cleaning rod and has some minor putting too. But it was made in 1879 after all. They even had a spare bolt body that I bought so I didn't have to drill a hole in the original one.

It depends on the country. The normal load for most countries is 100. But an Italian soldier could carry way more than a German or French soldier

So here's my deal guys, I got this M897 takedown field gun made in 1905 that was slightly bubba'd when I bought it. I picked it up for only 199$, whoever owned it before me cut the 30 inch barrel down to about a riot gun length and had an ugly orange butt pad that was falling apart already. Also, it could use a new finish done on it as well.

What I've been thinking is converting it into a trenchgun variant since the barrel has been cut down, issue is I'm not even sure such a thing is possible with an older shotgun. There's a family owned gunsmith around where I live that I was planning on taking it to when I have some money saved up but I wanted to run it by you guys for opinions and advice before I do.

What do you guys think? Should I go for it or should I just get the butt pad replaced and get i re-finished? Also, I'll post pics of it

I don't have the tools to force the firing pin out and I fucked up the guide rod trying to get it out
>>
>>34776259
I have converted one of the take down models to a trench gun before. It's going to be expensive though especially if you ask ask gunsmith to do it for you. Model 1897's are a real bitch to work on. They've got like a million parts and disassembly/reassembly is like doing a jigsaw puzzle. Just having it hot blued and having the wood refinished would be expensive. The steel on those old Winchesters has a lot of nickel in them and need to be blued at a higher tempurature. Numrich sells the heat shields for 100 something dollars. The barrel needs to have divets ground into it with a dremel so the screws that hold the heat shield in place have a place to rest. You usually need to machine a bushing to get the heat shield to fit, because the shields were designed for a straight barrel and the take down models have slightly tapered barrels. You may need to have the barrel cut some more to fit the heat shield so that means it would need to be re-crowned.

>bluing
>barrel modifications
>stock dent steaming/refinishing
>fitting a new butt pad
>ordering, modifying, and fitting a heat shield

Fuck man, if someone asked me to do all that, I'd probably want at least 800 bucks. That's a lot of work.

It looks like someone simply cut the barrel and faced it off instead of crowning it properly. With a shotgun it doesn't really matter, it's not like s rifle where improper crowning will have an adverse effect on accuracy. It's purely aesthetics but I think a properly crowned shotgun barrel looks much nicer.

I love the Lee Enfields. They're not only my favorite milsurp, they're my favorite bolt action rifles. They're quirky guns with some annoying things about them, but the capacity, smooth operation, and speed of firing make up for quirks like short brass life and sensitivity to bedding. They also have an interesting history, and are still fairly affordable, as far as milsurps go. When I was still in NC, I hunted pretty much exclusively with a Lee Enfield.

I'm slowly collecting parts on a No. 1 Mk. III* restoration, I paid $100 for a bubba job that needs a new forestock, handguards, and the other accoutrements relating to that part of the rifle. It's a labor of love and wasted money.

I need to pick up a M39 at some point, I find the level of work put into them to be interesting. It's cool to see a relatively crude gun like the Mosin Nagant turned into a pretty damned good rifle, not to mention the history of killing communists.

Found a convenient place to shoot yesterday and I imagine Ill probably be going around once a month now on vs. once a year. What is a good reloading press I can buy for someone who doesnt know anything about it?

what makes any of these better or different from one another?

http://www.brownells.com/reloading/reloading-kits/rock-chucker-supreme-master-kit-prod79994.aspx

http://www.brownells.com/reloading/reloading-kits/breech-lock-challenger-kit-prod54175.aspx

I think I might want one with a auto primer or whatever its called because that looks like it would be a pain in the ass otherwise
>>
>>34777287
The Rock Chucker is the "classic" reloading press. I use a Dillon 550 and a Rock Chucker for rifle calibers, and a Lee for 12 gauge. Have used Lee rifle presses in the past. I'm loading on decades old RCBS stuff that my Grandpa bought.

Either of those two will work great for your purposes, though I would lean towards the RCBS due to their reputation for quality. If you can't swing that money, then the Lee is a good option and will likely serve you well to learn on, and decide if you want to really get into reloading.

>>34777254
i havent hubted with any of rifles yet but ive no doubt they could all put a deer on the table.
i think the biggest difference between the enfield action and a lot of other is the 60° bolt throw. cock on close doesnt hurt but im pretty sure thats a bigger contributer to its speed. id love to find an original no5 but its tough trying to verify if its authentic online you know. i think those would be stupid fun.
I like pretty much all mosins that ive had a chance to fire. M39s have usually been the best but theres a couple of variants i havent had a chance to try yet. id really like to get an original m91 sniper just for the bent bolt. i think they look so much nicer thsn the straight one, i could care less about the scope. any rifle thats seen combat is cool imo.

For the most part yes. Accuracy... well I don't want to say it's the most accurate because there are plenty of vety very accurate lever rifles out there. But if I were to pick any lever rifle to use for military service the 1895 would be it. It's hard to explain if you've never handled one though.
>>
>>34778431
maybe someday il own one, its not high on the list right now though. Out of all the leverguns ive used my 1892 is my favorite. something about a little lever carbine is just great, its small enough literally anyone could use it with no trouble, ammo is relatively cheap, and if you get some hotter stuff you could use it for some game. Maybe not the best for military service but easily my no.1 for everyday gun stuff

Well lads, I've got myself a new project today. I bought a mix-master rust bucket of a 1916 BSA SMLE Mk.III*. It's missing some screws, a swivel or two, and the buttstock is loose, and managed to get cracked by I think the stock bolt's head getting jammed back and forth inside the loose butt. It has a surprisingly shiny bore though.

I know it doesn't have much to recommend it, but for $175 inc. tax what the hell.

I need an opinion, /msg/, I posted a few threads ago about looking at a G88 in fairly rough shape at a shop in town. I'm thinking about offering them $200 for it, contingent on them letting me pull the barrel jacket and make sure there's no severe rust on the barrel. What do you guys think, worth it? They're asking $350.
Supposedly, they have a book of info detailing the chamber/bore dimensions, so I wouldn't have to deal with figuring out the correct bullet diameter, etc. for it.

>>34780241
It is, it was covered in surface rust when I got it and the bore has g it some putting in it, but I can ring the man sized steel at 100 yds pretty consistently.

Forgot to mention, the lowest setting on the sight is 200 m so it hits about 14" high at 100 yds. I just jury rigged a folded over piece of sheet metal epoxied to the front sight post to raise it by about .3"
>>
>>34780591
I haggle over cars, guns, boats, and motorcycles
Asking for almost 50% less than list is a good way to blow any deal even if you don't expect to get it for $200
>>
>>34780767
I guess if it doesn't work for you, it doesn't work for you. I wouldn't knock off that much on a brand new gun, but on something that's obviously been sitting there a while and in the condition it was in, it's a good starting point. Wouldn't be the first time I've got a 1/3rd or more off asking price.
>>
>>34780831
Look its one thing if its clearly overpriced and they're sitting on it. But, it isn't overpriced and it'll eventually sell for very near that price. Despite what people think milsurps don't fly off the shelf. While waiting can be a good way to get a good deal it only works if the price is way too high to begin with.
>>
>>34780591
You're still insulting them, which means they aren't gonna want any deal with you. Especially when the list price is already very fair.
>>
I'll consider what you guys are saying regarding the price, $350 seems a bit high, but I'm not terribly familiar with the pricing on 1888s. I'd be willing to pay a little more for this one, anyway, since the guy that sold it included a sheet of reloading data he used to shoot it.
I'll head over there some time this week and update you guys with whether I buy it or not.

Local store has an M91 Carcano in stock. The metal is in fair to good condition, no rust but it's browning and grimy. The stock is sound and in good shape, not sure it's been sanded or not. Bayonet is still there and rotates fine. Bore is strong but dark and greasy. Sticker price is I think is $275 or low $300s. I'd try to talk them down to $250. Would it be worth it?

Get the Krag. You're a gun hipster, and Norwegian Krags are pretty weird and obscure.
>>
>>34782177
All 3 of those are weird and obscure.
>>
>>34782191
Yeah, but the Norske Krag has a really interesting look going for it with those weirdly conflicting lines of elegance and some abrupt industrial looking spots.

Most unique looking of the three.
>>
>>34777767

If it's in original condition you can double your money easily, if it's bubbaed that's about right.

>>34777027

Aesthetically I love my SMLE, the blunt nose is unique and cool. Functionally I love my Trapdoor because of the action. If I had to take one of my milsurps to war though it's the Garand, for obvious reasons.
>>
>>34781325

The M95 is highest on my list. I want a Weeg Krag, but that's low on the list. I have a Type 38 carbine already.

>>34782087

Yeah. I'd buy one at that price happily.

For the guys with Mausers, what's your experience with surplus? I saw a blog post by Ian on Forgotten Weapons, saying that most of the Turk surplus was poorly stored, and as such, the powder degraded. He said it should be fine in a bolt action like mine, but could be dangerously overpressure for semi-auto stuff.

Anyone else use surplus? Greek, yugo, romanian, turkshit?

>most of the Turk surplus was poorly stored, and as such, the powder degraded.

Has not been my experience, but I've only shot about 700 rounds of it. What people don't understand is that not all military 8x57 loads are the same; Turkish surplus is a clone of the older 1905 German S-Patrone cartridge, which was designed to launch a 154gr flat base spitzer bullet at ~3000fps. It uses a flake powder that burns slowly to maximize velocity from a 740mm. Pretty much all 8x57 autoloaders aren't designed to work with this kind of pressure curve, so you get excessive force input into the moving parts and the springs can't sufficiently buffer it, leading to damage.

Also the brass is old (annealing wasn't introduced until 1949) and sometimes cracks, and in any rifle that opens its own breech this is no bueno.

My long Mausers LOVE Turkish surplus, and I have also had great experiences with Yugo, Egyptian, Portuguese (all 198gr) and Israeli (170gr) stuff. Romanian surplus is OK too, just lots of residue in my experience, and the worst smell of the bunch.
