Would prototyping some magazine designs with plastic, 3D printed ammunition work alright do you reckon?

I'm no engineer, but the main factor would just be the geometry of the cartridge, not so much the weight or anything, wouldn't it?

Nah, I was thinking more about whether plastic printed cartridges would be a reasonable substitute to test sheet metal magazines, eg. for feeding, loading, spring pressure, etc.

probably not, you'd be testing not only geometry, but weight, friction, material properties, etc. of the cartidge. Using blanks would be slightly better, imo

oh i see, national/regional laws? Well maybe try just brass tubing, or wooden dowels, metal rods/dies... the great thing about experimenting is you get to be creative in your approach
