I agree. Although after recently reading With the Old Breed and Helmet for my Pillow I think there is much to improve.
Some of my issues were:

Also in general I disliked the pacing in the Okinawa parts towards the end of the series. From what I remember reading, the first few weeks were fairly uneventful for Sledge. In the series you skip the landing all together, and some of the stories he had with the locals. For example, there was no mention in the book of a local Oki woman being forced to walk into the marines with TNT strapped to her.
