The marines using it are fleet protection group so are used for boarding ect. And they needed a rifle that could fire a round that was less likely to damage machinery and be embidexterious.

SAS, SBS, SRR, MI, CP-MPs, COPs, only ever use the C8- L119 to stay low key, plausible deniability and availability of ammo. Its a dead giveaway when guys in civilian clothing are walking around with 80's.

When attached to Regular forces they pick up 80's for the same reason.

The "will X replace their rifle" is kinda stupid in general because when you add the economic aspect to it you'll realize that there are few things you can improve and the cost is too great most of the time.

For practical use - compare modernized AK-74M with rails and shit to some AR-15 with all the super-modern elements on the market. You get marginal increase in mechanical accuracy(which was present since the very first AR-15's due to different locking system) and being harder to clear when it jams but being more resistant to mud, sand etc. and it's slightly lighter. To replace those AK's with AR-15 means that you're paying lots of money for very marginal improvement in some aspect. And now, we're talking about L85 that on paper has slightly better mechanical accuracy than AR-15 and the only disadvantage of it is that it's a bullpup that's quite a lot heavier than that. So it's even more senseless to do it. You spend lots of money for having slightly better performance.

The same money can go for artillery, SAW's/GPMG's, grenade launchers - stuff that actually kills people.

Honestly, when it is time to replace the L85A2s, they should just get the same HK416 as the French. I really want to see more UK-French military cooperation. The other two options I see are expanding the Diemaco/Colt Canada from the SF units to the whole military, or considering they already use LMT weapons as DMR (L129A1), go with the LMT CQB16 that New Zealand did.

Something that isn't in 5.56, when 5.56 stops becoming NATO's standard round. If a new round becomes the stranded intermediate, the British will design their own rifle. BAE will most likely get the contract, but there's also a chance that they'll purchase a license and manufacture their own variants. Similar to the SLR.

While the L85A2 isn't perfect, and everyone likes to meme about it based solely on the reputation of its predecessor, it is good enough for what the army needs now. The MOD doesn't have the time or money to replace them (yet). The A3 upgrades are only to extend the life of the L85, not to make it into some new, AR destroying, über weapons platform - if they go ahead with the A3.

If they were to adopt a new service rifle, it'd have to be the C8. UKSF all use them, SF support group uses them (1 PARA etc.) and close protection units use them.

The cost of the actual rifle is probably the cheapest part of moving to a new weapon. It's not as simple as 100,000 * £2k for an AR15.

The logistics and training impact of swapping your main weapon system would be huge. As others have said, it's just not worth the cost for marginal gains.
