I'm looking into getting a Hi-Power as my first Wonder Nine. You need not try and talk me out of it because I'm sold on it, but what I'm not sold on is what finish I should get.
What advantages are there to each? What is easy to touch up and make look nice?
>>
>>34750617
When I bought a new one, I bought it with the epoxy black finish because I planned on making it into a carry gun, and the blued finish would probably wear easily.

But after scuffing the hell out of the frame trying to remove the trigger pin, I had it refinished in cerakote, I chose matte black (which turned out to be parkerized/dark gray in the end).

So If you want something fancy then get the blued. If you intend to make it a serious gun then get the epoxy black finish.

Also, don't hesitate buying one. FN is going to discontinue the gun in 2018 after 83 years of production.
>>
>>34750745
I'm looking at the MkIIIs on GunBroker right now and the Matte looks pretty lame, and the parkerized even more so.
I like the fancy aspect, i want to pair it with pic related, but also plan on shooting it plenty since i have the ability to reload ammo.

How much would giving it an epoxy black finish cost down the line?

It's like $30 to $50 cheaper than the Standard.
>>
>>34750827
what is? I'm looking at the FN Hi-Powers.
>>
>>34750852
The Mark III (epoxy finish) is a little cheaper than the Hi-Power Standard (blued finish).
>>
>>34750866
Ah I see, you're referring to the Browning Arms Company MSRPs?
>>
>>34750892
Yea, I think I paid about $100 less than MSRP. But that was before the paperwork and shipping.
>>
>>34750927
Ah, well I am buying used FN, thanks anyhow
>>
blued looks the best. fragile compared to other finishes.
park if done right is very durable finish if done wrong its shit. tends to rub off high spots and edges. what you gotta know about parkerization is park provides zero rust prevention. what stops rust from forming is the oil/grease absorbed by the parkerization. parks like a sponge. without additional oil park is useless but many people dont understand park. they wipe the oil off or dont give the park a chance to absorb the oils.
matte looks worst holds up best over time. it looks like shit now it will still look equally as bad later.
>>
Thoughts on Armacoat? Was thinking about getting my 1911 done up in it to remove the hideous two-tone look.
>>
>>34750617
Don't get a Hi-Power with the intention of it being your "wonder nine." The high capacity magazines have completely vanished from the market and while it's a good, reliable pistol, you're not getting the kind of features as you would get from a modern pistol.

>not as light as a Glock (although they aren't as heavy as a CZ 75 either)
>you must choose between factory configuration with a non-drop-free magazine release or else modify your gun
>safety doesn't click positively
>safety locks the slide too
>no tactile reset on trigger
>trigger pull is relatively heavy
>grip is relatively wide
>only 13 rounds factory magazine capacity
>recoil spring is not captive
>weird two-piece trigger transfer system which could fail if the trigger return spring is worn out, inherently bad design

Get whatever comes on some surplus original or copy of the Hi Power because if you buy them for anything over 450 dollars you're a fucking moron.

Hate to ruin your fun, but you do realize that that gun has been refinished, right? The original bluing should be more of a gray in color, the edges in general should be much sharper, and the text should be clearly imprinted, not cratered and no gradual dips into the rollmark.
>>
>>34750617
Well if you are buying it as a collector Item or you just played a lot of Day Of Imfamy, then fine, but the CZ-75 is a Hi power clone that's better, or should I say...slightly modernized.

Eh, whatever. It looks pretty. I'll shoot it a bunch like I do with all my other guns and provided I don't get too attached to it I'll sell it if something better comes along or I get sick of it. I'll consider the inevitable loss the "rental fee" + experience tax.

I already have this one.
>>
>>34752297
I hope you didn't get ripped off for it. A refinish like that (badly done) wrecks the value of the gun.
>>
>>34752310
Just out of curiosity, what do you mean by a badly done refinish job?
>>
>>34750617
Its the lamest pistol in the world. I dont get why you amerifucks want it so bad, i can only assume its because you dont handle it all the time. But its boring and whilst not ugly not good looking either.

red: rollmark erosion from hamhanded buffing of the slide
orange: visible rounding of the corners from sloppy buffing of the slide
yellow: incorrect bluing color and polish grit
gray: incorrect grips

Guns have two values, their regular value for the specifications and brand, and the collector's value. I've seen prewar Colt 1911's sell for only $600-700 (instead of $3000+) because they were refinished so badly that they lost all their collector's value, and were only valued at the average price for a modern production 1911. Your gun looks pretty decent and at least it's shiny, but the refinish job is only average, since it fails in some obvious ways. It would only be valued probably around $450-550, which is equivalent with police surplus Hi Powers; not $900-1200, which an original and pristine T-series would sell for.
>>
fuck you get a cz-75, i used to be a hi power fag. then i got a cz75 sp-01 and now im like fuck this shit is so much better then browning hi power.
>>
>>34752363
Bigger and heavier, plus worse trigger.
>>
>>34752214
whats the name of this type of hipower? i like the safety
>>
>>34752370
That's a standard Mark III. You rarely find them blued, but they are out there.
>>
>>34752366
fucking sp-01 has a waaaaayyy better trigger then a hipower right out of the box, with the fucking hipower you have to get a custom trigger job done on it just to get close.

>fucking light rail
>factory night sights

I'll give you that. Especially with factory night sights. The trigger isn't crisper, though.

Mine is blued, I didn't know that was rare.
>>
>>34752410
Blued Mark III's aren't rare, but when they have the extended, ambi safety and the "three bar" dovetailed front and rear sights, usually you'll find them with the enamel finish. Usually, the blued Mark III's have a short safety and unpainted notch and post sights.

they are great guns. go for it. make sure you get a legit fn. they last forever as you can tell. if you want to be cool, get a beat up one and take it to a gunsmith and let them re-fabricate it and make it super comfy.
>>

Not sure what three bar means, but they're dovetailed adjustable sights.

Actually it's already been discontinued. Stating that the tooling has worn out, FN shipped the last batch to Browning US back in March, those guns are going out to retailers now (if they even have any left at this point). Source: someone at Browning. There should be an official press release soon.

I could be wrong, but this source has been reliable in the past.

Maybe if we're lucky everyone and their dog will start making them, like they did with the 1911.

My hi power mkIII, got it from mk1arsenal on gb for 550 last year, it has the epoxy finish, and it practically new shape, mach1 gets some hi powers from tjme to time, they are good to deal with and take good pics, the only prob is the inport stamp under the slide was done by a fucking monkey and i had to file it down so the rough edges wouldnt cut my fingers, so be aware

If CDIsales has any for sale on their gb id reccomend them more, their import mark is done very discretely by lasering on the side of the barrel

Im aware it has to ve there but it didnt have to be done with a fucking punch by a fucking monkey so the metal is pointing out into your fingers.

Like i said cdisales just discretely lasers "cdisales" on the barrel under the slide

You can have a matte blue finish
Matte is a state of being, not a finish
>>
>>34755489
Hes probably using that term since some gb sellers like cdisales call parkerization "matte" under the finish column
>>
>>34755350

>>34755454

What a bunch of fucking clowns. I've never seen an import stamp so shitty looking. Hell, even on some of the rush-job AKs I saw 25+ years ago that they hurried to get into the country before import bans, those had importer marks that were of better quality.
>>
>>34757160
I contacted them to give them shit about it and all they would say is that its required by law to have an import mark, they wouldnt comment on how shitty it is.

I fucking know import marks are a thing, lots of my guns have very well done lasered import marks in discrete locations, but mach1arsenal are just a bunch of fucking retards.

Use some cold blue to at least blacken the underlying metal and prevent it from rusting into an orange color.
>>
>>34755131
I mean, the target signs were less common than the non-target sights, but it's not exactly rare.
>>
>>34755489
It's the manufacturer's term. Browning calls the epoxy finish the "matte" finish. The factory bluing used on current production Hi Powers is more of a high luster blued. Although prewar Hi Power bluing was polished to a lower grit, I don't think it was ever referred to as matte.

Better than PW Arms or Century, who put their import marks on the side of the gun alongside the manufacturer's rollmark, as if it's a "CAI Presents: Browning Arms."
