Greetings from /lit, il get to the point, writing a street level hero and need suggestions on real world body armor, specifically whats would you wear if you were expexting to get into a fire fight and had plenty of cash for protective gear?

>real world gear only and available to civillans only, and reasoning as to why you picked it is appreciated for authenticity, pic not related its neoprene.
>>
>>34747002
A tank preferably, no matter how armored you are 1 well placed shot and your done, superhero's are dumb and would get killed on their first outing.
>>
You can get pretty much anything from a basic mall cop stab vest to a full on autism plate carrier that would stop rifle rounds (in most states). It depends on what you expect to encounter. And remember, every extra piece of protection is extra weight and less mobility.
>>
Just a plate carrier with NIJ IV plates in it. You can buy that shit online and it'll stop AP rounds up to and including 30.06.
>>
Proper body armor isn't regulated legally in the US unless you're a felon, then it's illegal to own said armor.

As for the armor itself, there are a couple kinds.

Bullet proof, which can be Kevlar (usually just protection from handguns) then steel and ceramic (protection from rifles). There's also stab proof and riot gear. NIJ levels will tell you what the armor can and cannot protect you from.

Ceramic is /k/s go to, as it's relatively light and you won't get hurt from spalling, which steel won't protect you from. It is pricey though and will degrade over time.

Any other questions?
>>
>implying any story you write will be worth a shit when you focus on dumb plot unimportant details like what meme vest the protagonist wears
>>
>>34747032
Nice virtue signaling, go to reddit so someone else can pat you on thr back for a change.
>>
>>34747089
This. Unless you're Tom Clancy, in which case you're autistic enough that you wouldn't have had to make this thread and would have just written from memory, details like the type of body armor your characters wear add nothing and just make the story sound like Tiberius Rising.
>“Hold fire”, said Corporal Stryker. “Look i know you can get ahead of your self when your sniping Ramirez. But we need this one alive.” Ramires shot him with an angry glare, but then stood up and left the Barret .50 cal rifle with matte black finish for concealment. Attached to the top receiver piccitanny rail was a 36x zoom scope and red dot hybrid sight. The weapon was a custom job if Stryker had ever seen one. With a smooth hairpin trigger pull, it was easy as a walk in the park to scope out some tangos, and with the enhanced ergonomic pistol grip and cheek rest for sniping, it was easier than ever to truly eliminate your target down the barrel. The butt stock just helped stabalize the recoil even more making this weapon not only a deadly choice for long-distance killing but a marvel of modern bleeding edge tech.

>But none of that was important, what was important on this mission was getting the hostages out alive; there were ten of them, all Reuters reporters that were doing some embedded journalism story on terrorism and just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time but that’s the risk you take when you fly into a warzone Stryker thought out loud and then he looked over to Ramirez who was clearly getting very impatient.

>>34747189
Easy commander nerf, this guys just trying to do justice to the subject so guys like you dont shit on it after its published for being lazy and vague, of course you know this but you wouldn'tt get to flex for us if you keep quiet.
>>
OP here, where can i find a good primer on modern body armor types outside wikepedia?
>>
>>34747046
>>34747068
Thanks
>>
>>34747296
What are you looking to know? Theres really not much to body armor
>>
>>34747334
Enough to not seem like a fool when writing about it, i need something that can take one or 2 shots from small arms and not be too encumbering.
>>
>>34747402
Basically any hard plate rated 3 or higher. Encumbrance really comes down to what its carried in, you can get low profile carriers intended for diplomats that wont show up under a suit jacket. If you're set on soft armor, the same apples but they generally only protect against pistol rounds (3A).
>>
>>34747296
/gqg/ check the catalog
>>
>>34747002
You're not likely to run into rifle fire, so lugging around heavy, rigid plates that only cover a small area isn't the best idea. If you're wearing it for prolonged periods of time, getting in and out of cars, running, jumping, climbing, you want something light and flexible. Soft body armor is the way to go, and offers better coverage of your sides and shoulders. As far as what level to get, IIIa is a meme, it only offers more protection for hot .44 magnum loads. Level II covers everything up to .44 magnum, and last time I checked thugs weren't walking around with Dirty Harry cowboy guns. I'd also say opt for stab protection, but with full stab proofing things can get a little expensive. The most cost effective vest I could find that offers stab protection is from Safeguard armor. Been wearing mine for about 8 months on duty and it's held up, doesn't blend that well under a uniform though.
>>
>>34747623
Thanks i think i have my answer, there will be a "suit" of full on level 2 with some added knife protection, and maybe a soft vest for his day to day wear.
>>
>>34747706
Correction, lvl 1 should do it, might upgrade to a lvl 2 as the story progresses.
>>
>>34747623
It will add a few pounds, but you can add stab protection to a vest quite cheaply by taping ceramic floor tiles to it.
>>
>>34747002
>>34747706
No dont be a pussy. Phone book armor.

>>34747002
FirstSpear makes a plate-carrier vest called "The Slick", and it's tight enough to be worn under a big shirt or jacket/hoodie. A level IV chest plate can stop all handgun rounds and can resist rifle rounds. Pretty decent protection for a ripoff of the Punisher.

Well what kind of firefight is the hero getting into? Is this gonna be involving chilos n' nogs with a couple of Hi-points or Cartel/Mafia with AR/AK rifles?
>>
>>34747623
>IIIa is a meme
>meme
Dont use words you dont understand.
>>
>>34747623
You could have a plate carrier with one plate front n' back then have the soft body armor. I highly doubt a 6-7lb plate is gonna fuck him over. You won't even need a stab vest then, cause you already got it.

Besides, what do you mean full stab-proofing? Like wearing riot armor or some super suit? That's gonna be heavy in of itself.
>>
>>34747766
I wear this with IIIA semi-rigids at work, and it hides pretty acceptably under my uniform T-Shirt in the summer

Gotta wear something under it though it's scratchy as fuck
>>
>>34747854
Dirty cops, your typical street thugs, i dont see him getting hit with anything past knives, small arms and buckshot
>>
>>34747941
Might run into some heavy hitters with rifles but that will be later in the story and his equipment changes will reflect this
>>
>>34747002
i cant believe nobody has said this but i would use an armor made from UHMWPE plates, heat formed in a mold, it is pretty dam light material and a .3 inch plate is level IIIA a 1.2 inch plate is level III. it would be like the armor in your image but more covering in single pieces. could also be used in the knees with some padding and in arms and legs. Not to become some tank mind you, but because it is light enough to have a shitload of mobility which is hella important in street level.

Also it protects from scratches and damage if falling from a motorcycle or car (thats why i said to put some on the knees, elbows, leg sides, shoulders, etc.).

the armor can withstand impact as in falls, can be repaired by putting it again in the hot mold and adding more UHMWPE plastic if needed.

if your hero is falling from vehicles, roofs, under the radar (so he has to repairs his own gear), and in a lot of firefights on the urban environments where mobility is way more important. then this plastic armor is for u.

hope my autism helps.
>>
>>34747969
i forgot to mention that UHMWPE is extremely stab proof. the less molecular weight version of this plastic is used for sanitary cutting boards.
>>
>>34747941
>>34747963
Lot of cops nowadays have AR-15s and the likes in the back of their trunks desu. People like Carl Drega and the Hollywood robbers are reasons for that though.
>>
>>34747969

I got a real-deal IBA vest kit + a pair of double-curved Lv4 plates for a rough total of 200 bucks a few years ago, and that's what I'd most likely rock even today if shit would hit the fan.

Almost 360-degree protection against most common handgun and shotgun shots + grenade frag, and great protection against most common rifle calibers and blades around the chest and higher back.

Would prolly couple it with a PASGT pot + some ballistic goggles too.
All acquired via good ol' Ebay.com for dirt cheap.
>>
well it was to make the point that is the hardcore polyethylene not the normal of the mill plastic.
>>
>>34747002

Expecting? Depends if you want to be noticed or not.

Kevlar is your best bet as it provides the most coverage for the least weight and bulk and pistols are the most common threat.

https://en.miguelcaballero.com/clothes-armored

There's some examples of fashion meets protection.

You can go full tactitard if you want, but at that point you may as well be batman.
>>
>>34748100
No, avoiding the billionaire trope, just trying to decide what a smart ex military guy would use for some civillian warfare.
>>
>>34748224

"Smart"?

Smart guys don't go charging in. The smart ones are the brains behind the operation and gets things done by remote.

This is what you want.

If I lose 30 pounds, wouldn't carrying full plate armor be like nothing?

God damn that movie is great minus the ending, but thats not this mans style, by no means is he a brute (combat engineer actually) but more than once he has to suit up and break some bones.

That was a pretty good movie. Kinda annoyed they didn't have the common sense to keep him under 24/7 surveillance after all the incidents.

Nothing that stupid, just competent and real so gun buffs and military can read without being distracted by shoddy unrealistic writing by a author whos obviously never fired a gun, that and it can be cool when action movie/book characters talk shop
>>
>>34748358
Should've had it more like The Silence of the Lambs where he survives, or even for a bit more drama, it seems like he died but he didn't.

I guess if one wanted a sequel...
>>

I think it was something like that.

That sonofabitch was ahead of his time.

>>

He wasn't a mere bandit, he was actually highly respected by the townsfolk. He was waging a guerilla war with the local corrupt police department and land banks. They were oppressing people so much that all the people in the banks that Ned Kelly robbed basically let him take it and treated him like a hero.
>>
>>34748301
my knees hurt just looking at this

Here's a suggestion with some specific models.

LBT 6094 plate carrier with NIJ level IV SAPI plates
NE PVS-14 night vision monocular
Ops Core FAST Maritime helmet
Wilcox PVS-14 arm with G24 mount

100% legal. Still wish we could get L3 GPNVGs.
>>
>>34747706
I think you're underestimating how cumbersome a "suit" of even soft armor would be. If you want to make it gritty and relatable, give your protagonist something simple like a low profile handgun rated vest and a Glock 19. Have him take shots, let his true power be his resolve and the will to fight through the adversity AND the pain. No one is bulletproof, that's just cheesy.
>>
>>34747002
>ah this vest looks good
>look it up
>its airshit

ffs why would you need a "neoprne armor" against 400fps plastic pellets
>>

>>
>>34754559
like an edgy biker armor / futuristic larp shit / makeshift riotgear tier "looks good"

M8, he was a fucking bandit. That's it. The only reason he's a hero is that we Aussies hate authority (or at least like to pretend we do) and there's else even slightly memorable enough to be a historical icon.

Not OP, I'm just curious. I know about soft kevlar with all its ratings, steel and ceramic plates, the common stuff. So what exactly is semi-rigid? Kevlar, I assume, and the rigidity is just to make it work in a plate carrier rather than add any additional protection, or...?
>>
>>34747002
other than everything listed Id recommend a modified biker gear for the list aswell, depending on the characters budget and how crafty he is ( it could be cheaper but takes time/skill)
>>
>>34747002
Just slather him in Vaseline, that way the bullets don't have time to penetrate his flesh before they slip off of him. You ever tried to put a lot of pressure on a very slippery surface? He'll be like a human bullet deflector. You'll call him Ricochet.
