I'd recommend reading Fireforce by Chris Cocks for some answers. Foreigners were allowed to serve in the Rhodesian Armed Forces, but not as mercenaries. You were paid the same as everyone else and had no special privileges/treatment. A lot of Vietnam vets came over and thought they were hot shit, the Rhodesians didn't care much for that. Still, the Rhodesian Light Infantry at times had whole companies with a majority of foreigners so as long as you could keep up they had no problems with you staying on. Hell some Americans made it to the Selous Scouts and SAS.

Just off of the top of my head, Dennis Croukamp mentions in his book of foreigners being lazy potheads that brought in cannabis (apparently not such a thing in Rhodesia prior to that) and makes a point of stating that he never met an Australian that was worth a shit (must have been some story behind that, but he never elaborates). The SAS had some brits and at least one New Zealander according the Darrel Watt in his biography, so foreigners faced no obvious obstacles there.

Anyone have any pics of American volunteers with M14s in Rhodesia? I know I have seen like 4 or 5 pics but I cant seem to find them

From my understanding, it wasn't too difficult. As long as you were of sound physical and mental health, could speak english, and could afford the plane ticket you were good. They had advertisements in Soldier of Fortune and would send recruiters to SMCs in an effort to persuade guys that may have gotten disqualified from the US military to join up with them. Typically the foreigners that joined up were in the RLI.

I though so too. I just find it odd that Auddis Ward the guy who served in Seleous Scouts said how Rhodesia didnt want to foreigners into the country at the time.

However i suspect that he might have exaggerated the story little bit at least on that part.

Hes probably right. The Rhodesians were a proud and independent bunch (some might even say stuck up), so the idea of having to appeal to foreigners for help wouldn't have been preferable for them.

What i find odd is that about 300 Americans and many more foreigners from other countries served in Rhodesian ranks.

If entering Rhodesia and joining their military was so hard i doubt there would have so many voluntereers in their army. Especially when i came to foreigners who didnt have any previous military experience.

also they were cool with Americans and other foreigners to be bounty hunters in order to prevent the terrorists from poaching cattle in the tribal areas of the country. these bounty hunters had cammies and weapons and were paid per day with a bonus per person caught.
beyond their legality i do not know if they were overseen by the BSAP regulars or Special Branch as they were fighting criminals first terrorists second i doubt they would have come under army jurisdiction. Pic related is a security guard who was a member of the crippled eagles beyond that I am not sure if he is a bounty hunter or a formal member of the rhodesian security forces.

same reasons on why there were other mercs. folks needed the money and katanga that they were supporting was capitalist or at least aligned with capitalist interests. and with communism spreading across Africa many Belgian colonists became refugees and headed south into Rhodesia to escape. so the Rhodesian whites knew what was happening and with katanga bordering northern Rhodesia they knew they were next so some folks beyond money knew that keeping the fighting going in the Congo would buy Southern Africa a bit more time. also this was before the bush war kicked off so you had vets returning from Malaya with commie fighting experience that was in high demand.
