Okay I have a question.
What is a good pistol made around 1900 to 1920, that's uses a widely available bullet, doesn't cost much more than 1000$, and isn't the Luger, or the Colt 1911.

Oh and I guess early 20th century pistol thread to keep this going.

Pretty much any of the Browning designs, 1900, 1903, 1908, etc.

The early revolvers from Colt or S&W would work for this, too.

Walther PP, if you don't mind .32 or .380. Although, those were from the late 20s early 30s.

I guess to keep this going I could talk about the pistol I was thinking of getting.
I don't know, from what I've seen of it it looks good. But I haven't handled one myself so I have no idea what it's like, and I don't know if the maintenance would be a pain.
Anyone have experience with the Frommer Stop?

I have a 1903. It's a very gentle shooter since steel frame plus .32. Fits nice in the hand, still enough weight to let you know it's a gun.

Glad my webm is still floating around.

I love my Frommer Stop, it's a very light pistol despite being full steel frame and the recoil is very light. Stripping it down is certainly a process and one must be careful since it involves pushing. I ended up slipping when pushing the bushing on the return rod and giving my Stop a nice large scratch down the side of the gun. Otherwise, the takedown process is pretty straight forward and easy to do once you get it down.

The extractor breaking seems to be a common issue, but I bought a newly made one with from Jack First Parts for $50. A bit expensive, but worth it.

The trigger is a bit heavy but crisp (maybe 5-6lb) but the reset is short and the grip safety doesn't take much to activate. I highly recommend owning one.

Naw, the magazine well for the gun is very similar to other .32 handguns of the era. I actually have a Dreyse magazine in there that, while short enough to feed, is short enough that it takes a little more spring effort to feed. The action is happening in a fraction of a second and I've never encountered a failure that wasn't user induced
>>
>>34746370
Thanks for the response, anon.
I guess another question I have is besides the extractor, is there anything I would need to be careful about on this handgun?
>>
>>34746028
What did you pay for yours?

>>34746109
Jack First is expensive but good. I bought an internal hi power extractor for my inflis which cost more than some originals go for, but it was a perfect drop- in fit and fixed all my extraction problems.

Here is the Stop stripped. The guide rod has a small flathead portion that is pushed in using a slot in the barrel bushing. It's turned 90 degrees in any direction to detach it from the the bolt carrier, but it's possible to strip it since the fitting may have changed over time.

When pushing the guide rod down, make sure the bolt carrier is unable to move, but the guide rod is still free to be pushed inward to turn. There are a bunch of videos on YouTube.

I scratched my gun during this part because I am a poohead :(

Parts are fairly available. The thing I was scared about finding was a barrel (I have the type 2 so it's a little more rare) and it turns out there are small new production runs of them.

Basic stripping is dead easy since it's blowback. Detail stripping is not recommended.

Wait, there was a company who continued to make black powder revolvers into the early 20th century?

>>
>>34753994

Black powder shotgun shells were still manufactured until the 50's IIRC.

Many other black powder loads were being phased out by the 30's and WW2 ended a lot of other ones, because it would have been too costly to start up production again with the advances in smokeless.

Spain was selling and importing black powder pressure revolvers into the US until their Civil War.
>>
>>34755920
I guess I was just unaware of this.
From most things I've read it always seems like smokeless powder was adopted really quickly, and black powder was dropped.

Of course Ian has something to say about it.
The .22CB, .22lr, and .22 Magnum were black powder at one time when the cartridge was invented in the first place.
I am looking into making an electric fired harmonica gun one of these days.
No caps needed, powder can be made from scratch, lead balls and slugs can be made from tire weights with alloys. Or you can go high tech and make Bismuth/Copper slugs on a lathe I guess.

Pre 1900 black powder weapons are considered ancient and not legally a
"firearm" by the ATF. For those with a record or battling to get their rights back from a bullshit charge or under NICS appeal.

There are Third world countries that still use ancient guns for this very reason. Cost. It was heard that the Afghanistanis shot at Soviet troops during their invasion with a fucking blunderbuss sometimes in the 1980s.
Look up Khyber Pass gun history.
Cheap, scary, and sometimes downright dangerous.
I heard they refilled 1800s 8mm mauser rifle cartridges to the brim with celluoid film or black powder sometimes.

Why did so many handguns around this time try to have their own very specific ammo that was exclusive to them?

It was the turn of the century. A standard really wasn't established since smokeless, metallic cartridges were pretty new. Also, and most folks were trying to get those sweet, sweet government contracts. Those who win would set those caliber standards.

So why did stuff like 9mm, .45, and 32 acp stick around for so much longer?

Black powder revolvers were made up until the 1950s because they were so popular, cheap to make and ammo was everywhere. They only really died out because that was when conceal carry was stopped in Europe.

The trigger pull is fairly heavy (7lbs or so). It also takes a lot of force to move the slide if the gun is not yet cocked (cocking with the spur before moving the slide helps).

I love it, gassing tommies has never been better. It is NOT historically accurate in terms of armament for general troops but it has so many cool obscure ww1 guns in it. That's why I like it, seeing the guns on screen and shooting them, using a chauchat or an mp18. I just love the aesthetic. Also the c4 analogue is fucking dynamite.
/k/ shits on it because it's a mainstream unrealistic twitch shooter but don't put to much weight in the opinions of fat weebs.

So is it worth buying if it goes on sale?
I'm very sorry for how off topic this is but I've wanted to know for a while now, and /v/ never gave a clear answer.
