Whats the next great technology leap in firearms? Seems that the since the integral barrel extention that technology hasnt really progessed. Sure attachments and accessories have broke ground but the firearms themselves havent really changed.

Until we can fix the heat issue, I don't think so.
Handheld railguns when?
>>34736378
i dont know, but i do know that polymer was the worst thing to happen to guns
RIP good aesthetics and decent quality
>the firearms themselves havent really changed.
The changes are made at a non-visible level. Optimisation through metallurgy, chemistry, physics, etc.
Just because you can't see it, doesn't mean it's not there.

Self targeting firearms. Either laser guided small arm munitions or smart guns aiming themselves.

I fucking want one
it can't be that difficult to make one, right?

Its the power source that makes it impossible right now, not the gun itself

Polymer cased telescoping ammunition is promising. The LSAT program is showing good results, but I think they're holding out to get a bigger intermediate cartridge in while they're at it. A 6.something mm, while retaining lower cartridge weight.
Yes Ian talked about this recently but I've been pretty hype about polymer cased ammo for a while. The double dip for a caliber upgrade is a sensible point, but all pf this is speculation at this stage.
Imagine it's 2030 and we're bitching about 6.5mm poly going up to $5 per 50 rounds from $3, while oldfags talk about the scarcity of vintage 5.56 and 7.62 ammunition.

A hand-held railgun would require not only a lot of power, but also rails that resist getting bent out of shape. They don't need any radical advances, just better stuff than we currently have.

Direct energy.
Just like the age of the sword, the age of the gun is now setting, and we are entering the age of the drone.

>Whats the next great technology leap in firearms?
There isn't one. All we're going to see for the next century ''at least'' will be incremental refinements to existing ideas.
>>34736478
Nope.
>>34736506
Maybe. And they still get dirty shit faster. But think of it this way
>no preference anymore for left handed/right handed people, there is no casing
>snipers will prefer this method and anyone wanting to be stealthier
>even in big firefights, no cases to get traced
