Im starting to get into hunting.
I live in arizona and want to hunt for my own food such as deer and elk. What is a good caliber and rifle i can trust to perform effectively? The only one i can think of is 30-06.

>Deer in Arizona

Near Payson or something? They sure the hell aren't in the desert.
>>
>>34732309
What can i hunt in the desert?
>>
>>34732447

Coyotes. Not particularly appetizing, though.
>>
>>34732447
They have javelina there. I was born in Arizona but live in Wisconsin now, so I hunt deer.

The problem is most people say they taste like shit. You could also go shoot some coyotes. Not much you can hunt for food, nothing that'll taste good anyway.
>>
>>34732486
Even in northern arizona?
>>
>>34732520
Well that's why I asked in the very first post. My mom lives in Payson, it has woods and could have deer I don't know. Maybe around Flagstaff too. Elk I somewhat doubt.
>>
>>34732539
Oh i see it now
Im in tucson but can travel
>>
>>34732549
Well if you're serious about it it's simple. You need hunting tags for any big game animals, such as deer, elk, bears. Look up AZ hunting licences, if they have tags for that animal then it's found somewhere in the state.
>>
>>34732572
Ok thanks what rifle/ammo do you use to hunt big game
>>
>>34732447
Juans and Panchos near Tuscon
>>
A slightly better option than .30-06 would be 7mm Rem Mag if you plan on reaching out and touching something.
7RM has a better ballistic coefficient and less drop at farther ranges. You really can't go wrong with either, though. I'm a fan of Hornady American Whitetail ammo. It's cheap and just plain works. Good luck with whatever you pick.

That's not true at all. Arizona has plenty of Desert Mule Deer.
>>
>>34732539
How about you ASK first? I mean, BEFORE spending a grand or more on fun and scope?

>Elk I somewhat doubt.

Arizona has record breaking Elk as well.
Large game species that are available to hunt in AZ

>Elk - extremely Northern AZ West to East
>Mule Deer - spread through out the state from desert to Northern Mountains
>White Tail deer - south and central AZ mountains at higher elevations
>Javelin - everywhere but West
>Black Bear - Central Forests
>Mountain Lion - entire state
>Big Horn sheep - south and west, I believe you can only hunt one of these in a life time
>Buffalo - a few specific areas in the north and you definitely only get to kill one in a life time.

>>
Down in Yuma county we got mule deer, Big horned sheep but as >>34733117
said once in a life time hunt, Mountain lion, javilina, coyote, badger, and raccoons The game wardens will say no but I've seen Elk. I've used a thirty carbine for most but wouldnt use it on the elk but my friend has used an sks on most of his animals and a nugget once.
>>
>>34732296

270 for a little more comfortable shooting or 7mm rem mag and 300 win mag for deader than 30-06. Would suggest buying a gun with a break or spending the $150 on a gunsmith to put a muzzle brake on it. It helps, a lot, I'll never own another big game rifle without one

Northern arizona is overrun with deer and elk fool.
>>
>>34734764
Seconding .270
>>
>>34732447
>>34732296
.22 should be sufficient but I'm only guessing. My friend from high school would go hunting all the time and I think that what he used before. If you don't want deer there is plenty of birds in this Sonoran desert to hunt. I would say beavers but I don't think you can legally hunt them.
>>
>>34732309
Mule Deer and Coues deer in the desert
White tail, Black tail and Mule in the mountains
>>
>>34732447
jackrabbit and javelina. Not the best for cooking but they'll keep you alive.
>>
>>34732296
.270, 7mm, 308, 30-06, 300 win mag
all widely available rounds

huge fan of savage arms for out of the box accuracy
savage axis II (if you are poor as dirt)
savage 11 trophy hunter (if you have a little more coin)
>>
>>34732296
