I like my latest AR build but imho it could really use some wood.

I have lots of scraps of wood laying about let's see what we can do here. Here is a piece of walnut. It looks lighter than what you might think to be walnut, but that's only because there's no finish.

This 3/4" stock is not thick enough to be useful, so I will have to cut it in two and laminate it.

Of course I use my Japanese saw for this. Folded 1000x out of pure Japanese steel it makes a joke out of pig disgusting western saws.

The glue up was not perfect, but that was easily remedied by jointing the edge with a plane.

It's hard to describe how sexy a surface a good sharp plane leaves.
1000 grit sandpaper = electric shaver
Hand plane = wet shave

Just some power tool work. I didn't bother taking pics of the process but I trimmed the edges on a table saw, drilled holes for the M-lok bolts, and routed a channel so that this thing will hug the contours of the handrail which has an octagonal profile.

I think you laminated that wrong anon. When the wood shrinks the two halves will pull away from each other. You want to have warping forces oppose one another iirc

Triangle grips? Can you MSpaint them for me?

>>34730520
Hmm, Maybe you're right but I wasn't thinking much when I slapped them together with glue. They're glued with a shit ton of Titebond 3 so I seriously doubt it will ever delaminate.

This is where I stopped working for today because tomorrow comes the hard part where I will first rough out the shape on the bandsaw, then rasp it to an ergonomic form, sand it smooth, then attempt checkering for the first time in my life.

I'm not even sure on the design yet. At first I was thinking of going for something aggressive and modern, like the forend on a FN P90, or ape something made by Magpul, but when I put the pencil to the paper I can't help but draw stuff with more graceful curves.

HALP

I'm stuck. Please MS Paint something cool for me.

You could just do rail covers and go for the 1930s trials SMG look.
>>
>>34730553
I say do rail covers and so you can have a wood hand grip
>>
>>34730553
Whadda fugg. Not only did you drill straight between your two boards, you drilled into edge grain?
>>
>>34730573
There aren't going to be any wood screws to wedge the lamination apart. After I cut away the shape I'm going to countersink the pre-drilled hole with a forstner bit so a machine screw can pass through grip and into m-lok nut. Nothing but compressive forces from bottom to top and the wood is very strong in this direction.

Might as well make it from plywood, you need treated, sealed wood for gunbits. If you are going to shoot it at least.

My bandsaw is such a piece of shit. Harbor Freight a shit, SHIT. If I was at my dad's shop I would have gotten to use his Powermatic 700 lbs all cast iron bandsaw which would have made this job a lot cleaner and faster.

Word to the wise, if you're going to get into woodworking, buy heavy vintage heavy ass iron equipment.

It's still really chunky and I'm half tempted to just take a 3/8" roundover bit to it and call it a day, but I'll try to persevere with hand rasping.

I tried one once. It was alright but not going to buy one, their planes I don't like however. I've got Stanleys from the 1920s that have been lapped and they shit on everything else and make my autistic friend who spend assloads on Veritas mad because it's no better than these.

Jap saws are better because they are much much thinner, making them a lot faster cutting, but they don't need to be thick because the pull stroke by nature keeps the blade straight during the cut.

You only go for mlok is weight conservation.
Putting wood on it is the opposite of what mlok was designed for.
