the autoloaders
.380 ACP
pros: very concealable handguns, easy to shoot in nearly any platform. a good caliber for those who fear recoil, easy to silence
cons: typically low capacity weak ballistics, a less common more expensive and less useful 9mm,becomes less accurate at mid. distances
9mm luger
Pros:high capacity, easy to conceal, easy recoil, the cheapest handgun round out there, unbelievably common. accurate and somewhat effective at mid ranges. probably the best round for full auto
cons: sucks if you want to silence it, not the most effective round for ballistics, snappy in small platforms
.40 S&W
Pros: pretty good capacity, pretty good ballistics, pretty good distance.(its pretty good)
Cons: meh for suppression, meh for carry, fairly expensive, and fairly snappy (its also meh)
.45 ACP
Pros: great foot pounds of energy (irl stopping power) very easy to suppress, recoil is ok
Cons: low capacity (typically) low velocity so mid range accuracy sucks, and ammo is a little pricey
any comments or suggestions?
_if this gets bumped I'll do another list of less common rounds, revolvers and stuff......

>>
You need to figure out the type of gun(s) you want and its purpose before considering what cartridge, as the former affects the latter.
>>34724088
10mm is too good for newfags.
>>
It depends on your purpose for carrying. All of those are terrible choices if you're carrying in the woods for defense against bears.
>>
>>34723975
I like your list anon pls make more

Hold on, aren't most .380 pistols blowback designs?
>>
.357?
>>
>>34723975

9mm and 45 have similar energy, the 45's advantage comes from a larger wound and its greater momentum often causes it to deflect less against bones. A box of subsonic rounds in 9mm costs less than a of a box of 45. 40 cal is almost always a subsonic round, it's great for a supressor. Good 40 cal gives the best penetration on that list.

Your list is wrong in areas and too simplistic
>>
>>34725694

Rereading that, I didn't mean to sound like a dick, I know you're trying to help. Write it neatly on a word document then screenshot it, it will be easier to read and revise. If I remember when I get home where I have access to a keyboard I can go into more detail for you
>>
>>34725694
I'm pretty sure that .45 doesnt really have much more momentum.

Considering momentum is just mass x velocity

where as energy as 1/2 mass x velocity^2
>>
>>34723975
Not including the .25 ACP.

Shame on you
>>
>>34725794

You're going deeper into the variety of ammunition for each round.

A 230 grain 45 normally travels ~800 = 184pf

A 124 grain 9mm normally travels ~1100 = 136.4pf

That's a nice difference in momentum. Energy on average is still the same. Remember, there's a lot of variation in round weights and velocity, you can't pick two at random, you have to kind of average them out when speaking so broadly. The 9mm +p+ I shoot for example comes close to a 45's momentum but has a lot more energy.
>>
>>34724351
No?

You can get glaws in 380. 380 was designed for Smol handguns for carry that wasn't as strong as 9mm to require more locking, but wasn't anemic as 32 acp.

As a guy who works for an ammo company that specializes in self defense ammo, this thread is full of shit that enrages me on a daily basis
Most all common calibers are good for carrying and using
If you don't think so, you don't know shit about picking the right bullet for a given caliber to be effective in their own rights.

yes, but it (like all ACP cartridges) is very low pressure, i.e. easy to silence. thus the mac 11

.45 has greater foot lbs of energy
should have mentioned 40 cal penetration
subsonic 9mm kind of weakens the round

its true. yes you can get subsonic 9mm ammo but its kinda sucky ballistic-ally. the 9s only strength is speed, take that away and meh
>>

um, bruh.....that was kind of my point XD
>>
>>34731629
it just isn't bro. it generates less ft. lbs. of energy. it is a very good round, it just isn't the best
