kind of unrelated but in some movies theres a shootout, guy goes empty and just throws the gun away. at the very least, you could close the bolt or slide and use it to threaten or even as a blunt object to hit with. theres no reason to throw you gun away unless its something too large or cumbersome

The goal of a routing soldier is not simply to flee the enemy but to reorganize at a rally point in order to effectively reengage the objective or conduct an organized withdrawal.
Chances are high that someone at the ORP will have ammo for your weapon and be really pissed if you don't have a weapon anymore.
