Is the dark color on the stock a result from soaked in cosmoline, or were they just made that way? If it is cosmoline should I heat some out of it, or just leave it in?

M1917
M1903(a3)
M1903a4 repro if you have too much $
A Brazilian Mauser, the 1908 I think.

.308
Spanish fr-8
Spanish fr-7(if you reload low pressure)
M1916 Mauser (again, handloading)
Rechambered m1 garand

I'm likely missing some, but these are just some ideas

>How do I do it without messing up
Take it apart. Soak the metal in a tub full of mineral spirits while you hope your happy ass down to Lowe's and buy a heat gun and some blue shop paper towels (they tend to not leave lint like standard towels). Heat the stock and wipe the cosmo off as it sweats out, go slow but don't scorch the stock. Take the metal bits out of the spirits after about an hour or so and wipe them off thoroughly and re-oil everything. Reassemble when done.
>>

You can feel the greasy waxy buildup on any exposed parts. It's got a really distinct smell and tends to turn any metal and some wood a light yellow/orange color and dries a darker brown color when it clumps up.

While we're on the subject of recoil. Why do so many people whine about Mosins "kicking too hard"? Is it because so many first time buyers hopped on the meme train without knowing how to properly shoulder a rifle and promptly got their teeth kicked loose?

I think most people got their start in semi-auto rifles chambered in that varmint caliber. Without the operation of a reciprocating bolt to prolong the period of recoil it feels to them like the rifle is "kicking" harder.

I bought that rifle because my marksmanship skills went down the pipes because I can't really afford to shoot my milsurp, so I bought that GOOD .22 so I can cheaply build my skills back up. I own a Marlin M60, but the cheek piece is too fucking for my Asian-tier cheekbones to comfortably aim using the iron sights...so I am sort of "replacing" it with the CZ.

Need to start looking for mausers or lee enfields in south florida. I was up in orlando and went to a gander mountain sale and they had nothing but fudd guns. Should I buy a yugo mauser or lee enfield? Will most likely buy the first one I come across. Milsurp is rare in south florida. Had to order my sks online.

Yugo Mauser will probably be a tad cheaper, M48 will probably be in the best shape of all options. Lee-Enfield is probably a better gun.

Actually it shouldn't be too hard to find 6.5x54. PPU makes it year round and I know a couple others do as well, there is a bit of a cult around it. Coming out of a 29in barrel it's almost like a cap gun, recoil wise.

Not sure yet. It's not exactly collector grade. Built on a reproduction receiver with original GI parts. The wood stock was sporterized by the previous owner, so I've bedded it in a touched up drill stock. Still needs a couple of little bits to be "original complete".

I did the gun store circuit here in town today, saw a G88 for $350 in meh condition, a Israeli rebarreled k98k, and a collection of Astra 400s marked between $350 and $400 a piece. One shop had a Boys still in .55 on display, but not for sale.

Pretty interesting stuff, didn't buy anything though, I only have $200 in my gun savings account right now. Probably would have made an offer on an Astra if I had a hundred more to spend.

Pretty boring compared to actually buying a gun, but it's interesting to see what kind of strange stuff shows up in gun stores that have been opened since the 60s.

I saw a mint condition MAS36 at Cabela's for 200 back in 2013, and I didn't buy it because I thought it was weird and the ammo would be impossible to find. I wanted to buy a No.4 Enfield for the same price, but backed out when I researched what a "ZF" stamp on a British Enfield supposedly means.

Both were mint, and I wish I got them both, but instead I payed fucking 360 on a P1.

Satan is right. Pistols are horrible for starter weapons. They take time to get skilled with. I would recommend a rifle first.

Also Satan I think peoples logic is that little gun is for starters because of vidya.
>>
>>34732894
I got a buddy that wanted to start off with a 9mm pistol, thinking that was the best route, but I've slowly convinced him that a small rifle is the best route, but I still doubt he'll ever buy a gun for real.

I see that in a lot of people, actually. They want a cheap burner for protection at home or something, but shoot it just once at the range and get 1 foot groups at 7 yards, and call that good. The mental association is shitty too, cos that means that they really only think guns are to kill.

I got way off track. I'd agree that vidya is probably part of it, the other part being people that have absolutely no interest in guns other than thinking simply owning one means they'll be safe forever now.
>>
>>34733045
>they'll be safe forever now

You're lucky if they even think like that. Most people I know think that a phone call to the police will keep them safe...to which I usually reply, You have a fire extinguisher in your house when you have the fire department, you have a medical kit when you have paramedics, but only a phone when you need the police?

That's a FAMAS and it's valued at about tree fiddy.

I've never ordered a gun online before. The guy in my local shop said he won't give me a copy of the FFL, he told me to come in and fill out some order form or something and it's gonna cost me $40 in handling from them for a mosin. Is all of that normal?
>>
>>34733595

Normal? I dunno, but my FFL gave me a copy of their paperwork which I then scanned, and they charge $25 for a transfer.

I don't know if your state is cucked or something, but you might need to find a better FFL.

Like this? This is the upgraded nose cap design introduced in 1935 IIRC, and usually retrofitted to older rifles when they came in for repairs. It makes the end of the stock stronger; they had problems with bayonets getting torqued and splitting the end of the stock. Mine managed to escape the upgrade.

The barrel band is hinged on one side; the two halves are secured opposite the hinge by a bolt running through them. The "Popsicle sticks" are welded to the upper band and go to a through-stock bolt a couple inches back.

I just picked up a No.4 Mk.1 Long Branch I bought online and noticed that instead of the flip up ladder aperture sight, it just had the fixed 300m peep with a flip up 600m peep in pic related. Was this due wartime shortages or something? This was a NZ issue if it makes any difference.

So, pics finally came in. I thought the Greek Mannlicher 1927 Breda model came in the same configuration as yours, but this one has just the half hand guard. I don't know if I want it anymore, just doesn't have the look I want that the one like yours does.
>>
>>34737754
Wartime production. They needed guns and those nice fine sights took much longer to make than the basic aperture you have, for very little (if any) benefit. I don't think Savage or the Canadian Long Branch rifles ever changed though.
>>
>>34737855
That's unusual but should be correct. The original 1903 rifles only had a half hand guard, and it wasn't until the 03/14 that the pattern was changed. Possibly a restoration by someone.
