Family had this old rusty revolver laying around. Seems to be missing it's entire firing mechanism along with the shell extractor and obviously the grip. Could anyone possibly identify what revolver this is?

Should be identification either:
>top of barrel
>top of receiver
>bottom of grip
Looks like your standard solid frame of the late 1800's early 1900's, maybe an IJ/HR/F&W/etc. Not entire sure just from that picture.

Hope these help

That thing looks so rough that I'd be surprised if the stamps were still visible.
I agree, that style of revolver was so common, it could be anything.

It's all rusted to hell, maybe if I were to clean off the rust I could find em. The only thing I think would be able to help distinguish it is the little bump on the back of the grip.

Doesn't help at all, really.
If you see any stamps/markings/letters on it anywhere, that would help but I doubt there will be. They would've rusted away long ago.

I know exactly what it is.
It's fucked.

Either a Colt 1877 Lightning or Thunderer or a Colt 1878 Double Action Army. Any idea on the caliber? All 1877 Lightnings are in .38 Colt while all Thunderers are in .41 Colt. The 1878s were available in multiple calibers.
These are somewhat rare, but it's not really worth it to try and restore it or anything.

OP should soak it in Naval Jelly just to see what happens. It might completely dissappear.

Naval Jelly is shit. Mix up some Ed's Red, let that shit soak for a while, and then scrub off with steel wool. It will clean up; I've cleaned up far worse.

>Colt 1877 Lightning or Thunderer
Definitely not. Those have a rounded part on the frame behind the cylinder. These dont. I don't know how you reached that conclusion.

KEK

Than it's a Belgian copy of those Colts. It's pretty obvious this is at least based on the 1877/1878
>>34719562
Ignore >>34719592, you're right.
It's an 1878 Colt.
>>34719592
The double action army is the only one I could maybe see this being. Notice there's only a single hole in the frame. The Thunderer/Lightning had 3 holes did they not?
>>34719631
Oh shit, that's it.
Well OP, the 1878 Colt is more rare and more durable than the 1877, that's pretty cool. Still, it looks a bit too far gone to do much with.

if you live in a country without guns, that's a pretty good start for building your own.
