1st gen rails had a shitty lockup so bridging the gap was a feel good measure. newer gens kept the aesthetic. it was designed when cowitnessing a red dot was hot shit as well and there wasn't many good options for rear sights sans the magtec sight on the old sopmod guns.

Both times I've handled the bren 805, it didn't feel that heavy at all. Felt lighter and better balanced than my M&P too.
