Started with the Border Patrol in 2012 before I moved over to Customs in 2014 in California, then now in Montana.

It's fucking hard. I personally wouldn't recommend it as a career, but for an entry level job in to federal LE it's great. I know tons of guys that went on to be LEOs and agents with other fed agencies.

You're going to be in the Southwest for years. You're going to work 6 days on 1 day off, usually 10 hour days. Or more if needed. You can make bank with all the OT, but you won't really have a life outside your buddies on duty. Sometimes shit can get hairy. I'd go like a month and a half with mundane bullshit, then boom I'd come across a few dozen migrants or a straight up firefight. Definitely not for the faint of heart.

Also keep in mind that the Border Patrol is one of the most politically attached fed jobs there is. It sucked under Obama. We were forced to change how we reported contacts in order to show more "deportations", we were always paranoid that we'd have cuts, etc etc. From what I've heard it's gotten better under Trump, but remember that at sometime the Democrats will retake the federal government.

Tldr; if you're a single young dude, go for it. Do it for like 2 years, excel, and use the fed preferential hiring to go somewhere else.

>>
>>34717440
Go for it man, they're hiring like fucking crazy. Do what I did, slam it for 2-3 years. Live cheap, save everything you can. Work tons of OT, then move to like CBP, get a 4 on 4 off schedule in a rural post like Montana or North Dakota and use the saved money to buy a ton of land.
>>
>>34717385
Think I could roll that experience over into Park Service or Forest Service work? Don't really want to be LEO for very long, just like stressful work outside with a good group of guys.
>>
>>34717475
I know a guy who got a slot as a US Park Ranger, which is LE, other than that I dunno.

The GS gig gives you preferential hiring, but you still need to meet the necessary requirements for a job.

Agents take fire fairly regularly in New Mexico and Arizona, and occasionally in Texas. I've been in two, one was just taking rifle fire and we bugged out and called for air because it was like 1 am and we had no idea where it was coming from.

Second and biggest one we intercepted what we thought was just a group of like 20 migrants. Turns out it was a bunch of drug runners, we started taking rifle fire, returned fire with ours, called for air, whole nine yards. Chased them back across the border to where the Mexican authorities were supposed to intercept them (guess why they never showed up). We think we wounded a couple, but nothing solid.

Never heard it reported in even local media, people just didn't care.

I laugh whenever I hear shitlibs says border security and cartel violence are just memes.

Currently in the hiring process for Border Patrol Agent and CBP Officer, I've got the interviews next week.

It's a long, drawn out process for those of you that haven't started it yet. I've been goin through it since roughly March / April, and I'm just now having the interviews.

Also, if you list any past medical issues, even if they ain't a problem now, it will slow the process even more. I'm having to pull medical records from 9 years ago and have another medical exam because I used to have heart issues before I lost weight.

tldr; long ass hiring process months long, longer if you tell them about past medical issues even if they aren't a problem now

I know. And I like dogs. I just figured it'd be an easy way into a federal agent job and maybe investigations/1811. Also forgot to mention ICE would be interesting.
>>
>>34721127

I applied in the same time frame he did and the physical entry requirements were easy as shit. I had to do like 15 pushups/situps and a short step test. For comparison, I applied for Texas DPS at the same time, and the minimum was 55 pushups, 65 situps, and a 12 minute 1.5 mile.

On the flip side the questions on the CBP test were a bit challenging, while the Texas DPS test was caveman easy.

In the end I didn't take CBP up on their offer. I've worked at the hip with USBP for several years, and it looks like a pretty shit life. You're going to get stationed somewhere that sucks. Your hours are going to suck. Cutting sign in the brush sucks. Working a checkpoint sucks. Management will throw you under the bus.

Also, I swear to christ I saw a female midget BP Agent cutting sign the other day.

The Border Patrol is the most inept agency in the country, maybe even the world. I LITERALLY swam across the Rio Grande, in both directions, at noon, in broad daylight, butt naked, within full view of several houses. When I went though the highway checkpoint going home, I was still wet, with guns visible in the car. They didn't check even so much as a driver's license. They asked if I was a citizen, and I responded, "Yep." They let me through without another word.

>>
>>34726765
Regardless of your (albeit skewed) opinion of the author, if he had read any of the Borders trilogy he would know what 'cutting for sign' was (and how to do it) despite being a hapless urbanite. Same goes for skylighting, waiting at seeps, springs, and tanks, and a lot of other methods of tracking people in the desert. Stop conflating your half reading of Blood Meridian with the entire body of the man's work.
If I was going to descend into the maw of the desert hell that is the American Southwest in the age of the super cartels, I'd say McCarthy is as good a primer as any as far as light reading goes, what with all of the skinnings, scalpings, decapitations, and assorted mutilations happening there with startling frequency. But that is just my opinion.

Cutting sign basically means looking for evidence of human disturbance. USBP Agents do this more than any other law enforcement agency. This is why they often bring in a USBP BORTAC team for manhunts.

They didn't catch you at the river because USBP is overwhelmed dealing with thousands of aliens doing the same thing every day, and the last presidential administration thought of border security as a political bargaining chip rather than a duty.to be carried out.

Everything you said about the checkpoint is just ignorance. Why would they give a shit about a wet American going north with guns?

You think illegal aliens try to ride through checkpoints often? You think they're still wet after walking eighty miles inland? You think anybody smuggles guns north rather than south? You think it's unusual for someone in Texas to have guns in the car? You think they can't discern the difference between a Mexican and some fat American kid saying "Yup"?

Your story is just a sad indicator of federal border security priorities, combined with an unconcerning experience with someone at a checkpoint not observing any crimes and choosing not to violate your rights.

Because how do they know I'm American? I'm a literal wetback crossing one of the most heavily drug-trafficked border regions in the world with a carload of weapons, and they don't bat an eye.
>>34729506
>You think illegal aliens try to ride through checkpoints often?
As many of them as we have in America, they probably do.
>>34729506
>You think they're still wet after walking eighty miles inland?
Driving, not walking. They have trucks, you know.
>>34729506
>You think anybody smuggles guns north rather than south?
Anybody who moves drugs is going to be heavily armed whether he's going north, south, east, or west.
>>34729506
>You think they can't discern the difference between a Mexican and some fat American kid saying "Yup"?
First of all, I'll have you know I'm not fat (although plenty of spics are). And second of all, how can they tell the difference between an American and a Mexican? Racial profiling is one way, but that tend to get them sued, and besides, plenty of Mexicans can pass for white if they don't have too much Indio blood.
>>
>>34732038
>racial profiling tends to get you sued
That's how I know your story is bullshit. Racial profiling is not only accepted and implemented by southern border states, it's practically the go to tool when looking for illegals.
