Thinkin' about picking up a shotgun. Shot one a handful of times but never owned one, and I could definitely improve. Probably mostly used for birds, though I'd maybe pick up a slug barrel for deer. Live in Southern Commiefornia, so I can have anything too fun.

What's /k/'s opinion between Mossberg 500 & Remmington 870? I'd be buying new, hopefully on sale. I've seen both for ~$350. What would /k/ pay? Pretty into the wood aesthetics, not tryin' to get something tacticool.

tl:dr; I want a shotgun. What am I buying.

>>
its just preference between the two. on the low end models, theyre close enough for their differences to be negligible. i prefer the tang safety on the 500 but when i handled it in store, the hard guard was wobbly as fuck so i went with the 870. $300ish is the average price for a bottom 870, a little less for the 500. try walmart, they have great prices on these guns.

>>
>>34713947
The 870 has an odd release button. It's kinda forward too far. The Mossberg has it's release right there where your thumb naturally stays when holding the gun. Either is a good choice.

The aftermarket is great for both the 870 and the 500.
I prefer Mossbergs so I have a 590a1 and that fucker is built like a tank. I love it.
I also bought a cheap 870 express like you're talking about because it's a gun I can upgrade piece by piece over time as a project until i have a what's basically higher end 870 Police Model.
As budget permits you could:
-Change out the stock and forend with Magpul furniture
-Get a metal trigger group to replace the shitty plastic Express version
-Get a police Model bolt
-Add a Wilson Combat mag extension
-Get it Cerakoted
>>
>>34713947
Barrel swaps on the 500 are easy as hell. 1 reciver abd i have 3 barrels sets gor it. (18", 28" vent rib ported , for trap, and a rifled slug.)
>>
>>34714882
could be real if she did it up for the night before and then slept on it, it's not exactly impressive just some curls
>>
>>34714806
theres a vid of someguy shooting it where it jams constantly. still for that price its worth it even as a single shot.
current 500s are built better than current 870 express. 500 will feel wobbly due to the design which may put you off. 870 can take mag extensions a 500 cant without replacing half the gun.

Mossberg or (old) remington are good options. I really like the older 870 wingmasters if your'e into wood stocks. Anything pre-2007 remington is still good. If you want new, Mossberg all the way.

Related shotgun question: How are Savage Pump guns, like the 67, 69, Stevens 320, etc? What are reasonable prices one should pay for one?
Pic semi-related, the edgiest pic of one I could find.
>>
>>34716821
Yeah how dare people use their firearms for a practical purpose like hunting. Fuck those guys.
>>
>>34720723
Savage 67's are about the only bad pump guns out there. I heard at one point they were decent but when the cut more costs on them, the were awful.

https://thefiringline.com/forums//showthread.php?t=385232 Sounds like 69's are similar guns to the 67's.

320's are newer chink shotguns, shou;d be fine but I'd rather have a maverick 88 or iac 982
>>
>and yet another 870 vs 500 thread
How about checking the fucking archives to read the 3000 previous ones, OP
>>
>>34720855
Alright, thanks. I was considering getting a Savage 320 for my Dad's first pumpgat, because of how cheap the thing is. And I thought the other two would be easy finds at gun shows, for the same purpose.
>>
>>34720723
mediocre
150 at most
the extra 50 bucks on a mav88 or 870 knockoff is well worth it to avoid savage shotguns
>>
>>34714806
>>34716821

Not a good choice for OP, since CA bans all semi-auto shotguns with the ability to accept detachable mags. With the new "Bullet Buttons are ASALT WEPPANS" law that just got passed this year, there's no way to have them in the state unless OP has a time machine, goes back in time, buys a (then) compliant one and registers it with DOJ prior to the cutoff date.

DESU a light 12 gauge pump action is kind miserable to use after 50 or 75 clays. If I could go back and do it again I'd save up and buy a Stoeger M3000/M3500 or some other variant of that knockoff Berretta system.

Remington has been consistently shitting the bed since day 1. Pic related.
>>
>>34720723
The 320 is solid. It's a chink clone of a winchester 1300 and takes a lot of parts from a 1300.

>>
>>34724033
Yeah, metal parts break. It happens.
Malfunction means something not working, by the way.
>>
>>34724051
Well if your 700 is as inaccurate as my Sendero SFII was, as long as i stay at least 250 yards away I'm safe
>>
>>34724064
Yet Remington has more frequent and more severe failures than most other firearms manufacturers, and this has been consistently true their entire existence.
>>
>>34714904
You only use the release to rack your first round. Not noticeable enough to even be a concern.Keeps your finger off the trigger also until you are ready to fire.
>>
>>34724120
Thats a myth that applies to a few production years. The first decades of 700s were no better or worse than the other rifles of their age. A few snipers in Vietnam carried 700s they bought at sporting goods stores on Okinawa
>>
>>34724012
>and takes a lot of parts from a 1300.
Stocks, forends, and\or internals? Might be worth picking up for this reason.
