What would be the most versatile/best AR for SHTF? I always wanted a classic 20 inch AR but I always think how unpractical it would be in this kind of scenario.

What would be your configuration?

Also, SHTF best guns for northern america setting

12"-16" barrel if you're on the East Coast or the PNW, 20" if you're out West.

Low power illuminated optic or even a red dot are sufficient for east coast or PNW forested areas, you probably want at least 3x out west.

You want the ability to see and shoot far out if you're in the wide open spaces of, say, Nevada or Montana. But in the denser, more forested regions, you're fine with a carbine.

A collapsible stock is a must. And it should be chambered in 5.56.\

Northern America? 20" 5.56 and a 1:7 twist barrel. Standard .223 ammo dents steel plates at 100yds. Ruined my friends rifle plate with it. You're not clearing buildings left and right (nor should you, shit is literally too dangerous unless you're swat teaming it). The added length and twist rate give you reliability and lethality in a nimble lightweight package. I'd also add a 1-6 optic like a vortex strike eagle. Will give you the ability to fire from enough distance to not needlessly put yourself in danger.

Before literally everyone parrots what they heard word for word from Inrange. Here's what I would do.

For a general purpose, "I have no idea where I'll be in a month" gun, I'd go with a 16" Midlength AR with a Red dot or a fixed 4x and below optic.

The rationale is that if you were in a real SHTF situation, which is intensely unlikely in the first place, you literally have no idea where you'll be, because if you're not at home, you're likely moving by necessity and planning that, for example, you're always going to be engaging people at X range and building a purpose built rifle for X range that is slightly less useful at other ranges is kinda silly.

A 16" rifle gives you a good balance at all ranges and gives you a good fragmentation range while using Milsurp ammo, which is likely what most people will have access too. (M193 and M855).

Now, obviously if you lived inside a major city where it's highly unlikely you would even be able to leave in the event of SHTF, I'd recommend a shorter rifle that's more suited to room to room shooting.

If you live in a desert during SHTF, I have news for you. You're going to die unless you leave for a major water source. It's that simple.

TL;DR I think planning for specific engagement ranges for most people is a little silly during SHTF, since you're probably just going to be defending your home, or if you need to move for whatever reason, the ranges will be unpredictable.

Anyone care to comment? Are there flaws to this chain of thought?

USMC Armorer here.

I've seen weapons survive multiple combat deployments with only a few scratches.

I can almost guarantee that you'll never be operating so hard that you need to replace parts in the field.

Just do basic function checks and make sure all your springs are still nice and springy and you'll be good to go.

If you're really that worried about your rifle, take it to a gunsmith and ask to have it gauged.

Dunno honestly, never been in a situation where I had to ask myself that question.

If I had to guess though, I'd just tell myself that if he were the one looking at me through a scope, that he wouldn't be willing to make the same excuses for me and that my hesitation could get me killed. So yeah, I value my life too much to gamble with it like that and would be unwilling to risk letting him go.

What I don't know is if I'd sooner be thinking about him killing me or what supplies he might be carrying, and which of the two would be the afterthought.

Kyle d4 af. Mine will be built very similar.

I'm gonna build "my last" ar and I want it to be my teotwawki / recce rifle. Gonna go with a 11.5 upper so I can use a vfg with a armbrace and be over 26" oal. I got a good surefire m900v, just need nods and a ir laser. I'm looking at the stiner otal ir laser and the armasight Sirius gen 2+ nods. Then toss on a vortex strike eagle 1- 8. I live way back innawoods and the terrain can go from thick woodland to wide open mountain tops and fields thanks to strip mining and mountain top removal. I got a small 8.5 ar pistol in 300 blackout that has a 1-4 and it really works great for me as a daily jeep gun/backpack gun but I hate the price of ammo.

I have electronics that run off of AA like a eotech 512 and streamlight rail light, but I really want a night vision set up and so far I haven't found lights and lasers that run off of anything other than cr123.

>>
>>34719276
The muzzle device is permanently affixed, pinned and welded. It counts towards the 16" barrel length, so the ATF won't give no trabble. Normally you have 16" plus the muzzle device, so you save 1.5-2" this way.

If it is a 16 then I'd tell you to shoot yourself with it, except you'd probably survive because the 16 is a meme that could barely kill a toddler. A 4.5" extension to meet NFA requirements would work for an XM177 clone, but IIRC the extension used on legit 177s us a "sound moderator" which makes it a suppressor.

Either way you still have 16", so you may as well go for the 14.5" pinned/welded to get the most out of it while still toeing that line between NFA and compact.

well, if you can get a comfortable cheekweld and hold on the gun, it doesn't matter which.

The collapsible can be put all the way forward and you can "shorten" the OAL of the gun in smaller areas when needed, but that's really just getting into LARPing territory at that point.

Realistically, some kind of SBR with a can would be a great choice, considering most defensive scenarios would be in close quarters. Daily reminder that if your rifle is ugly, you will subconsciously neglect it and the machine spirit will be angered and fail you when you need it.
>>
>>34723050
what if your rifle isn't attracted to you though? what then
>>
>>34723066
Your life is forfeit. You need to become attuned to your rifles needs and recognize when it just doesn't like you.
>>
>>34723066
Then you're just right fucked. If you built/assembled it yourself you should be gtg though, that process really amps up the machine spirit attraction.

I couldn't agree with you more. Doing my own emergency planning, I don't even seriously plan for what happens after 4 -6 weeks or so. I think about it, but I don't obsess over it. I figure if SHTF goes on for that long, the world must be in such chaos that there is no way to really plan for it effectively. At that point your starting to shift from emergency management to community building, or insurgency or getting a boat to escape N. America or whatever.

Yes

why do people like those ugly ass fucking stocks unless it's airsoft to carry more battery which in that case you're still a faggot
>>
>>34713595
One that shoots 5.56.
At the end of the day optics, rails, accessories, and muzzle devices are useful, but in an emergency all you need is something that goes bang every time. If you're trying to clear buildings, snipe people from 800 yards, or light up a field with an IR laser after the happening happens, you're doing it wrong.

>>34723034

>16" barrel, nice compromise between velocity and compactness
>collapsible stock
>battery storage in the stock
>battery storage in the grip
>standard A2 front sight, 100% bombproof
>maybe an aimpoint red dot of some flavor
>2 point sling

that's pretty much it
>>
>>34727503
Yeah just the buffer tube. That tube might be a little shorter than normal

Was thinking of building a "leave now" carbine with the M21.
My main question is, how do you like the optic? God DAMN I want one.
>>
>>34713595
>I always wanted a classic 20 inch AR but I always think how unpractical it would be in this kind of scenario.

You should just get it anyway, because you want it and you can. Northern America is pretty general, west of the Mississippi and before you hit the Cascade Range sounds like it would be a great place for 20in.

Are you a woman? You argue like one for sure.

>thinking he'll be getting in constant firefights with bandits daily

If you do you'll die very fast. Even NAVY SEALs get a whole team of them get their shit pushed in by native locals who know less than your average fud.

You're way worse off. Let that sink in.

I wad a designated marksman who dabbles in long range shooting.

Considering SHTF would be more about hunting and keeping large groups of people away from your area... I'd like to bring my .308 precision hunting rifle.

Sure I'd prefer my .300 win mag but I'm more likely to find .308

I'd assume my every day carry piece G19 is a freebie since it's on me erryday.

Would preferably carry two guns. Precision Rifle and SBR AR15

I live in Los Angeles and I still love my 20 inch m16a4 copy. Bought it before they made us put on those ghey stocks.

The 20 inch barrel provided that extra velocity needed to get the round out there more reliably and to fragment at closer ranges.
