Is it weird to name your favourite gun(s)?
>>

Probably.
I named my M305 Revy.

It is isn't it?
My Mini-14 wooden RR is Carol and the bubba'd up SKS is Katyusha.
>>
>>34711040
Speaking of M-14, there's a used one at a local gun shop listed as a "Norinco m14" for $875, but the only part of it that's Chinese is the trigger group.
The rest of the gun is Springfield, so I wonder if it's worth the buy?
>>
>>34711123
If you're absolutely sure of this, then yeah it's a good buy. If you're wrong, you're way overpaying for a Norinco M14.

He's a good six inches shorter than I was at 14, so you'd have to go back further than that to find when he stopped growing.

Stop parroting that moleman autist, he thinks the numbers on the front sight of an SKS determine the rifles accuracy.

Truth be told the VZ is much more accurate than the SKS, however with the 18.6 inch barrel you do get worse groups than you would with the 16 inch barrel. I like to shoot both rifles they have their own quirks that make them special.

quit being faggots.
>>
>>34714097

Who the shit buys an SKS or VZ expecting either to be laser beam accurate anyway?

So I've been hearing a few bad reviews on the VZ58, which is starting to put me off of buying one. I have an sks which I like and was thinking the VZ would be the next logical step up. Anyone here which experience good or bad on the rifle? Is the current price worth it?
>>
What "reviews"? yes the 223 rifle is crap but the 762 is a solid platform.

Well if the guy who is looking to trade his K31 would give a response it would be best to do it sooner rather than later.

So to that anon who has that K31 I'll be giving you until tomorrow (Aug 1st) 5:00 PM EST to give a response as to whether or not you'd be interested in trading the K31 for the Viking. If no response is received I'll assume that you have been lurking and decided against the trade.

Thought* i made a wrong assumption and was wrong get over it. And sks's are more accurate than vzs. I still have to look for my target i got 1-ish inch groups on at 100m. Then eventually try the same thing with a vz. Ive out shot people with ars before. Lately tho ive just been pissing away ammo

I have no source, just hearsay. Well, that and I used to have a buddy from China I'd frequently chat with. We spoke of firearms at length, and I recall him having nothing good to say about the Type 81 at all. He was exempt from Military service however due to reasons so it's not like a first-hand account via usage of the rifle. He was a cool guy though, I miss chatting with him.

>>34715924

Hit a nerve did i? No sks in the world will shoot 1moa. Stop lying on the internet to make yourself look cool.

>>
>>34716245
Jesus fucking Christ kid. No 7.62 surplus ammo in the world shoots 1 moa, and most commercial 7.62 doesn't either. A 70yr tilting bolt isn't going to make that any better.
>>
>>34716272
Have you tried not being shit at shooting? You can shoot accurately with any gun thats got a half decent bore with good rifling, theres people who get 1-2moa with m44s, getting 1-2moa with an sks at 100m isnt impossible.

It only over heats because the piston is directly under the handguard, no cover. But with a pop can and scissors you can make one in 5 minutes, and it makes a huge difference. Or drill holes in the handguards, lots of people do that and even after market handguards have them already drilled just for this reason

>>
>>34726691
>New manufacture unless you buy a used CZ858 model which is built from surplus receivers and some surplus parts
>Most have chrome barrels
>Accurate for an x39 gun
>Reliable
>Can be modified fairly easily to use 10 round pistol mags, at moderate expense
>Moderate aftermarket available, though not nearly as large as AR15
>Comfortable for most people, so long as their should isn't super tall and fits the curve of the stock
>Magazines can be found for fairly cheap, if you don't mind surplus quality
>Takedown and cleaning are super easy
Overall it's a good gun, nothing outrageously fancy, but I always seem to keep coming back to it. I definitely prefer it to my SKS.
>>
>>34726691
Pros:
>glorious czechnology
>non-restricted (if you care about such things)
>a decent amount of aftermarket if you feel the need to customize
>cheap ammo with the 7.62x39 model
>super easy to tear down for cleaning and maintenance

Cons:
>price, they were good rifles at the $1000 mark but nowadays it's getting more iffy
>iron sights aren't the greatest
>mounting optics can be a bit tricky due to the open action
>handguard length might bother some people

Ouch... rough stuff... still, if I had the money, I'd consider that a fair price. I think the vZ.58 is a better design than the AKM. I think I'd prefer a restricted-length barrel but non-restricted is so much more convenient; can actually take it out in the woods and go hunting with it then.

what the other two guys said, except it isn't that hard to mount optics, it's just hard compared to modern AR or Tavor, any other rifle that doesn't have a top picatinny rail built in is basically on the same level as VZ
>handguard mount for dat scout and cowitness setup available for cheap
>side of receiver on CSAs already comes drilled and tapped for a rail mount that comes with a quick detach lever and mounts similar to how AK optics mount

>nobody mentions that it's stupidly reliable, with beastly extraction and that gaping open action
the only people who had stovepipes were guys with overgassed CSAs. there was a batch in 2013 or 2014 that had oversized gas ports and basically those rifles would beat themselves apart and cycle so violently and quickly, they would sometimes catch the extracting shell before it could clear the action. very minor and specific problem that was rectified ages ago. an AK is more likely to jam than a VZ
>this triggers the digautist who sold his floors and his growth hormones to pay for a Valmet

oh and don't listen to this jizz guzzler
>>34727140
>you could buy a well-liked proven to be well built and reliable rifle in one of the cheapest caliber available
>but why do that when you can buy an untested new rifle in a different, much more expensive to shoot caliber, from a company that's notorious for making trash first gens and ironing out the problems in subsequent models years later
I get that you want someone to buy the rifle and beta test it, but we have CGNers to do that for us. We don't do this shit to fellow /k/ommandos, you stupid cuntmonkey!

all you really need to do is put a piece of pop can into the bottom hand guard, or just get Fab Defense handguards (don't plan on using the top one as optic mount though, you'll need the NEA handguard mount or the one Corwin Arms sells, if you want a decent front mount option)
those are inexpensive and have vent holes. get some black aluminum insert out of a magpul and bend/trim it to fit -- and you got no heat troubles
>also comes with a picattiny on the bottom, for lights or grips

>>34727999
while I agree with your assessment of the current price, upside down Satan, there still aren't many things in this price range that compete with it
>T81 could be a contender, but we'll have to wait and see
as for a more expensive and completely untested rifle (at least T81 is made by big factory in China and has some track record), I would advise against beta testing the 102 as his main battle raifu, NEA track record isn't great with first line of AR-15s and this is clearly a step up in complexity for them, since it isn't just making the most produced rifle in North America (which again, they tucked up at first).

this boils down to feeling like you may have overpaid for a sure thing vs paying even more for a cat in a bag

when CSA was $1000, there were people saying you have to be mad to pay that, since 858 could be had just a few year earlier for $599
if we were all born in the 40s, we could all have $500 Valmets and we'd think Moleman was the biggest cuck for dropping over 3k on his unicorn -- but that was the price when he could buy it and it was worth it for him.
if Anon can afford $1400 or so that VZ is today and it's worth it to him, other than the awaited and untested T81, that will likely be a lot cruder and is heavier (handled it at a gun show), there really isn't anything to challenge the VZ as a proven reliable 7.62x39 magfed/SA/NR in that price range.
if you bought yours for $1000, you wouldn't buy one for $1400, but he didn't have the earlier option.

Why is it that when you push for the Type 81, everyone thinks you're a Chinaman shill, whereas no one calls you Alexander Dubcek's incarnation when you push for the VZ58?

(I personally plan on getting both the VZ58 and Type 81; think they're both interesting not-an-AK guns.)
>>
>>34727708
>>34727894
Jesus Christ just how retarded are you, Moleman? If you're indeed Canadian, you're making us fucking look bad.

Anyways, the vZ has quite a few advantages over the AKM.

>Same weight but with a milled receiver
>Can reload via clips or mags, not just mags like with the AKM
>Carrying half mags and half clips can reduce pounds from your loadout
>Short stroke gas piston means less weight on the bolt carrier
>Alloy vZ mags are slightly lighter than plastic AKM mags (albeit VERY slight)
>Bolt hold-open

So the vZ is more sturdy due to its milled construction yet does not sacrifice weight, the fact it can easily utilize both clips and mags means it can carry more ammo or have a lighter loadout with the same amount of ammo, a potentially slightly lighter recoil or at least not as jarring of a recoil impulse due to short-stroke gas piston, and having both an automatic and a manual bolt hold-open available is quite handy for informing the shooter when the firearm is empty as well as allowing the shooter to easily lock the bolt back and stuff a couple clips into their mag.

In order to use clips with an AK mag you need to remove the mag, get the adaptor, put the adapter on the mag, and THEN go for clips. With a vZ all you have to do is lock back the mag and bam, you can top it off with some clips.

>3 SKS clips
About 1.2lb (comparable to a loaded STANAG mag)

>Loaded vZ.58 mag
About 1.6lb

>Loaded plastic AKM mag
About 1.65lb as I recall

>Loaded steel AKM mag
About 1.85lb or so

>Loaded steel AK-47 mag
Pretty sure that's nearing 2lb

The only obvious advantage the AKM has over the vz.58 that I can think of is cheaper manufacture and possibly the vZ has no storage space in its buttstock for a cleaning kit but I can't remember for sure.
>>
>>34731890
Don't forget that the safety is better.
>>
>>34713334
It's heavier loaded than a VZ, longer, the sight picture is worse.

The Type 81 is an answer to the Type 56, SKS and the follow on 20 round SKS abomination they made in the 70's that was a failure.

Both the 81 and the VZ are going to be on par with an SKS - the VZ because milled and better barrel trunion config than an AK, and the Type 81 because SKS/Dragunov style trunnion and longer barrel.
The VZ is lighter and handier, from a country that highly valued mechanized infantry.
The Type 81 is a riflemans rifle from a country where light and light motorized infantry was king
>>
>>34731947
I love the AKM platform, but yeah, I'd be silly to ignore the many advantages the vZ.58 has over it. I'd be perfectly happy with either one, but I'd be slightly MORE happy with the vZ and would enjoy carrying either 4 mags and 16 clips (280 rounds for 12.8lb) or 5 mags and 12 clips (270 rounds for 12.8lb). Meanwhile 8 vZ.58 mags weigh the same 12.8lb but with only 240 rounds available, and 8 plastic AKM mags weigh about 13.2lb for the same 240 rounds of 7.62x39. Also, 4 vZ mags and 12 clips is 240 rounds for 11.2lb, over a pound and a half saved compared to 8 vZ mags, and a solid 2lb saved compared to 8 plastic AKM mags.

On a side-note, I'm so fucking happy that CAPTCHA isn't fucking with me anymore. On the ones where you have to click to make new pics appear it's fast as fuck instead of taking like 5 seconds each, and for the choose-the-box ones it's only 1 or 2 photos to click instead of 4-5. Thank fuck.

can't really think of any, to be honest the heat is more of like "well, if I really have to come up with something to gripe about..." than an actual issue, with 5 round mags and most people wearing some sort of gloves, this is rarely an issue.

858s had the occasional gremlin, which CSA doesn't have because of a welded tab on the bolt carrier to prevent any possibility of it.

this is the reason for the "VZ is haunted" meme, since there really aren't any legitimate problems anyone can come up with for it

Ehh its nothing some grip tape couldn't solve on the front part of the slide lol. But in all seriousness its more of just a range toy and HD gun for me anyway.

Their shotguns which are still legal for import for reasons are still cheap as all hell.

I just sent an email to Tactical Imports. We'll see how they react. They like bringing in "oddball" guns that just skirt past prohibition (Skorpions), so we'll see. It'd look a hell of a lot less goofy than the non-restricted BRS-99's.

Ew, prepare for them to be way way too expensive on arrival.

John the Ironclad used to carry those for dirt cheap for a long time, there was a trench model with bayonet and sexy heat shield (picrelated) and the basic one, like in burgerbro's pic. stopped a few years back. some people are now bugging CanAm to ask our yellow overlords to make some for us again. people on CGN generally love them, no reported issues
>not surprising, their 870 clones called Grizzly are arguably better than the actual Remington Express models currently being sold as the main line of 870, since they're based off the old school Police model and use better processes and materials; also incidentally making them heavier, 12" Grizzly is reportedly heavier than a 18.5" Express

I'd include this video that shows the pros and cons of a 1897

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FO343bBwmTs
>>
>>34741642
great video
I guess someone who wants an 1897 would understand that it isn't going to have a number of modern features we're used to today, so I'd call them older design elements, rather than cons.
StG 44 is a pretty bad rifle by most modern standards, but there are tons of people who are so crazy about it, they'll but a .22lr just because it looks like the StG
>>
>>34710699
how?
>>
>>34741642
He's wrong about the hammer spring. Springs weaken due to the number of cycles, not duration of a cycle. Continuous pressure could, however, deform the material on either side of the spring.
>>
>>34741767
I'd focus on the factors of ammunition safety (don't use the wrong ammunition with the 1897) and with the safety concerns with the firearm he demonstrated.

>>34741843
He talks about spring damage in this video. I am not in full agreement but he provides a decent argument.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pch0J9-7i2k
>>
>>34742195
Spring compression can damage a MAGAZINE, but it doesn't damage the spring itself. The feed lips, in particular. It can also deform the cartridges in the magazine.
>>
>>34742245
He also covers springs in general. He isn't saying that he is the definitive truth and authority on the matter. He is merely presenting his experience and perspective on the matter.

He ultimately leaves it up to the viewer.

>>34742298
Material science is pretty clear on it, though. The only reason a spring would weaken is from having the spring compressed beyond its limit of elastic deformation, at which point the duration of the compression still wouldn't matter. Hell, since most springs are made of steel, if the stress amplitude is below a certain point, it won't even get metal fatigue and could conceivably function forever barring you fucking the temper via high temperature or letting the thing turn to dust from oxidation. Pic related.

in the interest of being autistically specific, you could also wear your springs out from friction against the mag body
>>
>>34743001
Still, the point is that you'd have to either design the magazine poorly or misuse it.

You can find them for relatively cheaper in Finland/Europe, but then you need to find an exporter/importer whoo is willing to bring one in. I've heard that you can get one for less than 3k maple bux this way (I've heard ad low as 2.2k with extra mags), but take that with a grain of salt.

It's based on the original AR10 spec, which isn't named in the Firearms Act, and it predates the AR15. The SR25 is based on both the AR10 and AR15 which is why those are restricted (variant).

Anyone tried taking multiple rifles through Air Canada? I'm thinking of putting 2 rifles in a double case to take on vacation to maximize the $50 "handling fee", but do they charge per weapon, per case, or flat fee?

For reference, the website says "One rifle case containing no more than two rifles" is considered one item, but below it states "all accepted firearms are subject to a handling charge of $50.00."

Opinions / experiences?

It's a real hoot. You get a real nice power boost out of the 16-20" barrel. You actually don't get a lot of recoil, though. .38s feel like .22s. If you want cheap shooting with a bit of recoil, get a .45-70 and start reloading.

Getting an Savage in .308 looking for a decent optic see a Vortex Viper 3.5-10×50 going for $400

The main use for the rifle will be target shooting.

Should I look for something better that can hold zero or will this do the job just fine.
