So at this point, what's the best 5.45 commercial load, given AKOU's most recent testing?

As far as I can tell they're mostly in the same boat, going Wolf Performance > Wolf Mil-Spec > Golden Tiger > Silver Bear, but they seem to be super close as far as actual performance goes (think like 1%-4% kinetic energy difference). I'm starting to think it may be a case of "just buy whatever's cheapest/you like most" which makes it sorta default to Wolf Mil-Spec and GT since they're sealed for long-term storage, but I'm curious to know what everyone else thinks/has experienced.

GT used to be, now it's just a cheap(ish) and oddly loaded cartridge. In 7.62 it's hotter than most loads but inconsistent, and in 5.45 it's slightly weaker than Wolf (which is already 150-200 FPS weaker than 7n6) and also inconsistent.

Like I said though, someone on AKFiles did the math and found that in the grand scheme of things, these differences come out to about a 4-5% loss in KE compared to 7n6, and compared to each other it's something like a 1% KE difference with the exception of Red Army Standard, which is apparently just garbage. So this begs the question - does any of this matter enough to *not* just buy the cheapest ammo available, or should we still be buying Wolf Mil-Spec/Golden Tiger simply because it has the proper neck and primer sealant?

daily reminder that, with the exception of Tula and RAS, "commercial 5.45 is under-loaded" is a meme

>>34710706
this is correct
the velocity scales perfectly with bullet weight, a commercial 60gr loading at 2800-ish FPS has the same kinetic energy as 7N6 at 3000-ish FPS

>>34710706
this is correct

Also, Bob Sled is a sniper, so he judges ammo by the load consistency to the extent that he seems to pay little attention to FPS or environment/storage factors. I don't see a reason not to buy 5.45 GT or wolf mil-spec. With 5.45 imports standing on the edge of a knife, I prefer the ability to store for years (decades) if need be.

Hey guys, speaking of cleaning rods, I keep buying them and they keep breaking. The little part opposite of the threaded side keeps breaking off, most have a tiny spot weld holding them together, some seem to be pressed on maybe? Anyone got a good source on cleaning rods that won't break after a shooting session?

dumping pics of my new to me SLR 106-FR. I but new furniture and a russian sling on it and have modified a steel East German 5.56 Weiger mag to fit in it. i plan on testing it later this week and if it works ill probably get more of them. The only thing I need to do is reparkerise the mags after fitting them to the gun sense you have to remove a bit of material from the reinforcement on the front of the mag.
>>
>>34711379
The East German mags are actually a little smaller in size compared to the circle 10s. Roughly the same size and shape of an ar15 mag, and they easily fit in my ar mag pouches which is convenient.

Don't take this the wrong way, but everything about that gun looks incredibly bizarre to me, even though I know full well it would look perfectly normal to me with a 5.45 mag in it.

How much did you pay?
>>
>>34711416
$800 for the gun 1 5rd mag and 5 30 rd circle 10s. $140 for the triangle folder, the Russian wood Bakelite grip, Russian sling, and East German steel 5.56 mag. I plan on selling the original black plastic furniture and mags except for the 5 rder, provided the modified east German mag proves reliable when I test it. I may also pick up a single Bakelite 5.45 and modify it for .223 just to complete the AESTHETIC.

Dont have an AK, want an AK, dont know anything about AK's beyond the basic. I'm going to build it myself, whatever "it" is.
I want a "generic" build. But I can't decide between wood or plumb, russian/bulgarian/yugo, or 7.62 or 5.45.
I won't be modernizing it, I specifically want a semi-historically accurate build for the 70's to mid 80's. If I do build a second one later (no guarantee that I will), it'll be a sidefolding krink like in the OP.

What would you suggest (5.45 or 7.62)? How well do parts between Bulgarian and Russian sets swap? What are the differences between a generic Yugo and a Russian rifle (in terms of design not fit/finish) and can I swap furniture with them?
With potential new sanctions on the horizon, which ammo type would be less fucked?
Lastly, what was the standard rifle used to troops during the Soviet-Afghan war?

I want to listen to Kino and smoke Belomorka's.

You don't want to build it yourself, trust me.
>What would you suggest (5.45 or 7.62)?
5.45
>How well do parts between Bulgarian and Russian sets swap?
For AK-74's? Pretty much 100%
>What are the differences between a generic Yugo and a Russian rifle (in terms of design not fit/finish) and can I swap furniture with them?
Completely different and no, you can't really swap anything out, Yugoslavia did also sorta's funky shit. Most Eastern European stuff has some level of compatibility with Russian rifles.
>With potential new sanctions on the horizon, which ammo type would be less fucked?
7.62x39 has more survivability.
>Lastly, what was the standard rifle used to troops during the Soviet-Afghan war?
A mix of AKS-74's and AK-74's.
>>
>>34711709
>>34711711
I already have the tools and have put together parts kits before (Uzi's on the bed, VZ is off getting coated, DPM is tac'ed and waiting for me to stop being lazy, and a Galil is in the mail, also theres a pile of mauser barrels I need to get rid of.)

I am in over my head though, you're right on that aspect. There's a lot of nationalities and variants, which has whats been holding me back in the past.

>>34711711
>7.62x39 has more survivability.
any reason other than saturation?
>A mix of AKS-74's and AK-74's.
thanks, that helps to decide a little bit.
>>
>>34711754
You're going to have to do a shit ton of research before you start building. Also to do it right you'll have to put down a couple bills on jigs at the minimum.

7.62x39 is made by more countries that we import ammunition from, like Romania. All the 5.45x39 we import is imported from Russia and there is no US made 5.45x39.

I have recently decided that I am in the market for a mid-tier underfolder. Little research so far has yielded me with a few options. I know I shouldnt ask, but could you help in shaping this decision-making a little? Im in the under $750 range and under $800 shipped and including a $25 ffl fee out the door. Here is what I have gathered so far:

Century arms milled and stamped AKs seem to be hit and miss. No one knows what trunnions are used and their shitty caste ones are the guess. They also seem to have canted sight and other issues that some claim have been "worked out". Much like WASR, it depends on whether its an early made one or newer one.
Yugo PAPs seem to be good. I have heard of the least number of issues with these. Although I have a lot more research to do. These seem to be in most the cheapest and often on sale.
I.O. produces top of the line dogshit for low prices. Theyre made by complete fuckmonkeys and shoild be avoided at all costs. The make century and taurus look like H&K.
Romi builds from various no names are found from time to time. The compete in price with the PAPs which kinda worries me. However they are Aesthetically appealing to me.
Blackheart I cant seem to find much on, from what I am finding is they are similar to Lee Armory, just without the price tag. Both are made with hungarian parts kits and I have read Blackheart has top notch finishing.

I am sure I am missing some. Any suggestions are accepted. Right now Im leaning towards a PAP or Blackheart. Possibly a Romi if I can look it over.

Mak-90's are no where near $1,500, try closer to $600-900 on an average day. A Pre-Ban 56S is around $1,500.

WASR makes an under folder, yes but that are harder to come by.

I'll shoot my 7.62x39's a little less than I do now, but I'll still shoot them.
I'll shoot my AR's a little more than I do now.

I'll shoot mostly of 308 and 12ga through my aks, which has mostly been more/less the norm anyway. That's just the most fun stuff. 12ga and nato rounds are going nowhere.
My 556 ak will be fine obviously be A-OK.
And 762x39 will still be all over although I'll be pissed that I can't get more golden tiger, but I've got . I'll have to go looking and see if anybody else has a nice boat tailed bullet.
And I've got about 7k rds of 545x39, mostly 7n6, so I'll be ok there for decades at the rate I go through it. And someone else will make it or import it long before I run out.
My main worry is 54r since I only have a few thousand rounds and kindof enjoy it, but I'm sure it'll be commercially available from plenty of places before I'd ever have to worry about running out.

Whenever I sell it I actually want to use the proceeds to buy something more expensive than I would normally be comfortable buying. Like an SVD or one of the new Sig (SAN) imports or an SP5K. Or maybe even a milled PLO kit/build. Like a type 2 AKS or something cool.

I assume he's still talking about my LWRC because I haven't bought a new AR or anything.

A type 2 would be something really cool and also really fitting for your collection too. That makes sense, save up what you can for something really cool and out of your price range and put that money aside until you sell your M45 to make up the rest

My advice would be to be smart about it, don't blow it on a lot of dumb little things that add up. I had a friend inherit some valuable stuff which he then sold and was gonna buy a fancy car but he kept buying little things saying "it's only $100, I can afford that with this money" and stuff like that and sure enough he blew it all on little dumb stuff. Before you sell it decide what you want with the money and set your mind to it

Would it be correct for a 104? I've only seen the civi versions lately.

They can only hold 5 or 6rds. Thats why I'd only get 1 since it would be just for looks.

Are you able to fold the stock somewhat with that optic attached? I may get something similar for my SLR.

Is there a reason rguns separates their 68' and 69' kits?
Are Tula AK's of vaguely better fit and finish than Izzy's?

>>
>>34717206
yeah, but it stops at about 30 degrees from the fully closed position

it's easy enough to just remove if you want to fold the stock for storage

what is your endgame? something more modern or classic?

It works well, I didn't want to mod the gun so I just backed out and then locktighted the sling stud screw a bit and it fit right on. Its been secure and stable when shooting and when supporting the sling on my shoulder during innawoods/hunting time.

Just warning you, my 8x42 broke after a spam can, just out of warranty.
Some lens by the turrets is loose, you can hold it a certain way and it'll focus, until you move the gun again.
The sad part is that I'd been getting 2 distinct frustrating groups for quite a while but had no idea that the scope was slowly falling apart inside. So it was way more frustrating than just having it break.

Thanks for the heads up. mine has been shooting fine and holding zero well, but I've only put a few hundred rounds through it

I heard that the SLR 106 uses standard akm sights and that the ramp is different for the change in drop from the different caliber. Is this true, and if so can I install these sights on my slr?

8m3 is a half decent russian projectile not nearly as good as SST but since it's russian it must be better.
the only redeeming factor is 8m3 is way cheaper than sst.

You order from CrazyUkranian or whoever his name is on AKFiles too? Just got mine today.
>>
>>34717024
Because, they are very over priced for what they are. They don't do much to them to warrant the $2000+ price tag. That being said, they are very good rifles, apart from RDs bolt on gas blocks. If you can, get a Definitive Arms AK, very high quality, on par with RD or KC, but a few hundred to several hundreds cheaper. I own one of their older DAKM-4150N rifles, smoothest feeling, straightest AK I've held.

As for the SLRs, I have no idea. Someone with more knowledge could give you input.
>>
>>34717952
There was a period where a few places were trying to just dump their stocks, I remember when PSA had them for like $459, cheaper than a WASR, the only "meh" part is that they didn't have the bipods.
>>
>>34717959
Low quality b8
>>
>>34718065
nope. it's a decent projectile but not as great as slavaboos would make it seem.
>>
>>34718056
If they're otherwise identical I'd say sell one. You can probably get more than what you payed for both for it, and use the proceeds to buy the bipod for it and whatever else tickles your fancy.
>>
Two question guys.

How do you feel about 5.45 and 7.62 when it comes to aks? Pros/purposes of each cartridge, plentifulness/viability as main rifle cartridge especially in a shtf scenario

And what are the best ak models available for each cartridge for american to get?

I'm not very familiar w aks but I think I might prefer them to ars rn
>>
I got the pin out. Now I can't the stock lined up to drive the pin back in. Fml.

I had them source the parts.
>this is where i fucked up.
I did ask if they were going to to use bulgy parts though. The other issue is the cut the perpendicular channel on the barrel too wide so the handguard is loose. Compared to azex the kilo dissapointed me.
