Embrace the bullshit, the TRADOCisms and don't think too much into the methodology of EOD at the school house. At the schoolhouse youre there to learn the "most safe" "most correct" way to EOD. But balance the whole "follow the leader" act with an open mind and some ability to think out of the box, the instructors can be lenient if they like you and think youd be an asset to the career field.

Play the game with the endstate in mind. But if you focus too much on the endstate you'll probably fail out of the game. Once you talk with the instructors and get into the career field you'll find that theres a million ways you can skin a cat during an EOD problem, the schoolhouse has to grade you based off some metric so they use the super safe "per the pubs" methods.

The bad is that the career field has been officerized as of late, with higher giving a lot more scrutiny on the anarchy that used to happen at shops. I'm not the best guy to ask DESU, i did 8 years other ranks before my New OCs (at platoon and battalion level) decided i was "no longer adequate for contract extension due to personal reasons" in other words they wanted to run their new units their way.

I got out and signed on for a commission 4 years ago, training was easy, got sent to a separate regiment, but my former OC at battalion level got done for embezzlement and his 2IC was upped in battalion CO, him and the regimental CO both liked me and wondered why i left, so bought me back into regiment. Guess which little shit works for me now? (funnily enough i know two people who this has happened to as well.)

Shits easy as fuck compared to being ORs, but its somewhat enjoyable.

If you're looking into a post uni commission i'd say look long and hard at it, some units officers can achieve some qualifications whilst other units officers can receive others. But if you're just into it for a job, look at how once you get out it will affect your univerity degree. No point having a degree in whatever then being an infantry or cavalry officer. because if you decide to get a job in civ div, then thats X years you haven't been practising your degree is it?

The other "leadership qualifications" are utter bullshit and will mean you end up as a low tier manager somewhere after you get out.

When you do get in though some tips:
Never volunteer for everything, but never don't volunteer. So volunteer for every other thing that comes your way.
Take every bit of additional training or courses and network.
Never be afraid to get your 2ICs opinion or help with something, experience sometimes does
Keep your mouth shut and ears open.
NEVER underestimate or belittle the guys below you just because you're an officer.

When I went thru OSUT for 11B, 3/51 of the guys were hardcore weebs. Like waifu pics sent from home posted in their lockers (DS flipped shit was funny).
