I'm looking at getting a hunting rifle sometime in the future. I just need some suggestions to start my research. I plan to use it for elk hunting.

Tikka t3 is a great starting place.
>not very expensive
>accurate
>lots of different models to look at
Only downside is the synthetic stocks on the cheaper models aren't that sturdy and you'll want to replace them down the line. It's not necessary, I've been using a t3 lite in .300wsm for a couple years now and haven't had any problems with mine

honestly, you'll be hard pressed to find a better deal on a hunting rifle than the Mossberg Patriot.
What caliber would everyone recommend? Any personal favorites? I want something that I could feel good about passing on to my kids someday.
tikka 308 or 300WM in wood stock. if you've got more dough, sauer 202 stutzen elegance

Specifically for elk? .300wsm or .30rcm. Flat shooting, short action, very accurate, don't require 26" barrels for good velocity, and manageable recoil out of the comparatively light rifles.
However if you'll also be hunting other game, a .308, .30-06, .270, .280ai, .284win,or .260 might be a bit more well rounded.
OP here. Any older guns you've had forever that you'd recommend?

Any bolt action in .308 or 30-06.

Tikka with wood stock in 270 is best.
>best trigger
>best accuracy
>270 has high velocity and ample sectional density
>tolerable recoil.
