On paper it's going to be .357 sig if you're not poor and 9mm if money is a concern.

10mm might edges it out if larger animals are a concern or you don't mind the recoil/blast and they finally release some really good 135gr bullets that can take advantage of all that energy.

Depends on the purpose. For self defense it's probably 10mm. Get a double stack and if you load a hot enough round you got .357mag power with 9mm capacity. Doesn't get much better than this.

For hunting probably 7.5 but since that round isn't even on the market yet(?) i'd go with the good old .44 mag. Drops deer with the first shot quite reliably.

As a range toy i'd go with whatever is most fun to shoot and cheap to feed.

.40 is a great caliber. More potent than 9mm, especially with fmj. Better capacity than .45. The perfect round for people. 10mm is great but for a combat handgun .40 is a better balance of power/controllability. /k/'s dislike for .40 is a result of group think.

Depending on the definition of easily, I think Sig is pretty easy. It's not like .45 ACP where you need every inch of the gun to be different. Both 9mm Luger and 357 Sig are .355 caliber and barely any work is done to make 9mm and .40 S&W cross-compatibility. Basically all that's needed is new barrels, new mags, more chamber support, and stouter recoil springs. None of the major internals need to change.

I actually hand load the nosler 135gr hp right around 1500fps. Incredibly fun and not so much recoil you need a neck brace. As a defense load, the 165's have it unless you're loading for large animal. In which case 220gr Hcl from buffalo bore works well. 10mm is a boutique round that I like quite well. It's cheap enough to feed since I reload, but there are more practical options for people with less time and money.
