Hey /k/ as most of you already know there are Italian surplus Beretta 92s pistols for sale for $300. I was thinking about getting one. What are some pros/cons of this pistol and what can I expect?
>>
>>34705641
Pros: You can drive stakes with it.
Cons: Shooting it will require a good dental plan.

Pros: its cheap fun and easy to shoot
Cons: its old & used
I like mine. makes a good truck gun
>>
I got one from jg when they were $250. Pros are it's a well made gun for the money. Trigger is decent. I particularly like the double action pull. I think that "made in italy" adds cool points. It's all metal unlike newer Berettas which have some plastic parts. I also like the sheen of the finish.

Cons would be small difficult to use sights, mag release position is not great, safety isn't ambi (only a problem if you're a lefty).

Good lord, the last 2 weeks has been nothing but "should I buy makarov?" and "should I buy 92" threads. Yes, for fucks sake, they're both good guns.

Pros: accurate, reliable, 9mm, generous magazine capacity, good aesthetics, easy to field strip and clean, get two and pretend you're max payne.

Cons: heavy, slide mounted safety a shit, people with tiny baby hands won't like the grip.

>>34705662
This fuckin meme needs to die. Only a couple of them had the slides crack and it was only after the military torture tested them like 10,000+ rounds of +p+ ammo. They won't blow up, they're fine. Even the ones made by Taurus won't explode.

I can vouch for beretta, specifically the itialian ones. I own pic related a 92a1. Anything that might be worn on the surplus beretta can easily be replaced either from aftermarket or from the beretta website directly. For a surplus 92 I would recommend buying a new locking block (30 bucks) and if the barrel is really bad maybe a new barrel (150-200) it's really worth the price. I doubt there's been enough rounds through them to justify a new barrel, but the decision is all up to you.

>cons
Mag release on the surplus Italian berettas are awful. I wouldn't want one with a heel mag release, but at the same time for that price it's hard to complain.

All in all I say go for it. I highly recommend beretta and will always vouch for them.

>>
>>34705641
You might need to replace a few parts like the recoil spring. The big problem is that heel mag release. If you're fine with those two points then it's a great purchase.
>>
I believe the magazine release is a European style heel release. Check the locking block if it's an earlier model.

the grips aren't that big unless you are a little girl, which are the only people that bitched about them.
>>
>>34705641
Pros:easy to clean, cheap to shoot, high quality build, tons of market support, proven design
Cons: heavy, huge, armchair warriors who complain about slide mounted safety and reliability because they know a guy who served in 2012 that was issued one from 1993 that has seen more abuse than the average street meat star.

>>
Also after shooting one, I really like how it feels in my hands since they are relatively large.

I'm thinking of getting them because the guy who makes Resident Evil grips also makes them for the 92S (even though in game they use 92FS). Probably get the Jill Valentine ones.
>>
>>34705896
Tiny baby hands here.

I didn't like the grip, other than that, a great gun.

You can cut any Beretta 92 pattern magazine with a 92F catch cutout so it'll work with them. Are surplus Airtronics/Checkmate still like $8? I haven't checked in awhile.

Anyway pic related. These mags now fit Beretta 92FS, Beretta 8000, Walther P99, Walther PPQ, Walther P88 Compact, Walther P88 fullsize, Magnum Research MR9 and Beretta 92F. I'd bet they fit another dozen guns too.

Got one a while ago from Southern Ohio for $270. Aside from some very minor wearing on the bluing, it was in pristine conditions. No scratches, dents, etc. The bore looked like it was brand new.

As for cons, heel release can be awkward until you get used to it, and the sights are "primitive" compared to newer 92 models. A bit of white paint applied with a toothpick fixes this for the most part.

>>

Depends on how well you cut the slot.

Measure twice cut once.

>>
>>34705641
Yes they are good get one.

Does anyone know where to find the metal, flat floorplates for the mags? I only ever see them around occasionally on forums, usually on fucking checkmate mags which don't have the right cutout for the 92S reeee.
>>
>>34707947
PPQ and 92F/S cross compatibility? Shit, you've got me curious now. Any guides or impact on reliability?
>>
>>34705641
I had one a long time ago but sold it. It wasnt surplus, it was like new. While it was beautifully well made and functioned well, little outdated features add up to make a gun thats not very enjoyable. The ergonomics are poor, the heel release is shit, and the sights are microscopic. There are better ways to spend $300.
>>
>>34705641
Can the sights be replaced?
>>
>>34710686
The front sight is machined into the slide.

Walther scrambled the P88 into the XM8 trials with un-cut Beretta 92 magazines and kept the same basic body, only shortening it minutely for the the P88 Compact and early P99s, until late in P99 production when they changed from straight-walled 16 round bodies to ribbed-wall 15 round bodies with a larger nominal width (the ribs fit into troughs inside the P99 magwell) to reduce internal friction and improve reliability. Those ribbed-wall P99 magazines won't fit in Beretta magwells because the mags are too wide and too short, but Beretta mag bodies still fit in P99 and P88 magwells, and both share the same feed angle. The PPQ (M1, paddle release) is essentially internally identical to a P99 so it's included too.

There is no reliability difference other than what one might see with different mag coatings, and the ejector can be damaged by you if an over-insertion stop is not used because 92 mags are longer than P99 mags. I didn't bother with that, I just load gently.

Pic related left to right: 92F, P88, 92FS, 8000, P88C, old P99, new P99 and a PPQ with Beretta 30 round extendo in foreground.

tl;dr Every P88, P99 and Beretta 92 variant can accommodate the same full size 92 mag bodies, with different catch cutouts.
>>
great gun.

i don't personally like the round trigger guard, and the heel release isn't the best for todays methods of defensive shooting.

if the gun is in good working condition and doesn't look totally like shit, i would certainly buy one.
>>
>>34710868
Just a measure twice, cut once situation then, right? Take the magazine from the gun you want to fit, take the magazine to be cut, and mark and measure the bodies and make your cuts?

Also, does this apply to the PPQ M2 mags? I have a 92S and an M2 Navy and it'd be pretty dank to throw my 35 round 92FS magazine in both of them.
>>
>>34707947
>I'd bet they fit another dozen guns too.
Apparently 92fs and p226 mags are interchangeable if you add the catch cutout (according to a Chris Bartocci youtube vid I saw a while back)

That's what I did, with some caliper measurements where possible. If you want you can make a jig to both measure the factory mags and mark/check the new mags. Use your imagination on how to do that.

My final go/no-go check is locking the magazine in the target gun and ensuring that the feed lips are the same distance from the ejector as factory magazine feed lips are. So it's best to err the cuts LOW. Because if you cut too low, you can file a little bit to drop the magazine down, but if you cut too high, the magazine will be too far down and you can't put that metal back. I made errors on some cutouts (remember these fit several guns each) and have not experienced any feeding or slide lock problems in any of them.

>>34711055
That's true, they do fit but P226 magazines are very slightly longer front-to-back. P226 magazines fit very tightly in my P88, but P88 magazines are wiggly in my P226. I doubt it's enough to make a difference if the cutouts are done well.
>>
>>34711009
I don't have an M2 but the mag bodies should be the same dimensions, just with a different cutout for the button catch. They should interchange as well.
>>
>>34705641
not a manlet, but my palm/finger ratio just doesn't work. No problem with any other full size, but 92s are not comfy.

Can the 92-s be converted to no safety?
how hard is it

This, truck gun to me means something I can be a bit rougher with and not that it stays in my vehicle. It's pretty useful having something already worn but cheap you don't have an overwhelming desire to baby

This. Why not just get a regular M9? They can be had new for just under $500 and it's better in every concievable way.
