On a side note I've known people who have had to do the above.

My mate, a farmer, had Irish travellers come onto his farm to steal livestock, he fired a warning shot and injured another using his rifle stock. Another time another group of irish travellers broke into his house to get keys for his equipment, one had a knife so he put a shotgun shell into them, Injuring them. Police arrived both times and arrested the injured people.
His house then got shot up in retaliation so he was granted a Section 5 permit to carry a pistol and other semi automatic firearms for his own defence.

I personally had a guy attempt to smash my mrs door down screaming "call the police", covered in blood and carrying a knife. My mrs went outside with a shotgun and told him to back off.

If by this you mean material things, like your car(and not simply one's home/land) then thats something we actually can't do in the US(in most if not all states). It is completely illegal to shoot or try to stop someone stealing your car if you aren't in it, and even if you are in it you still have to claim you feared for you life etc.
