Hi /k/. Let's talk about personal armor.

Advantages/Disadvantages? Types of body armor through history and their effectiveness (everything from leather to IV plates)? Armor you wear for an EDC if you live in a shitty area? Everything.

To kick it off, this modern armor looks great for the average Joe still living in the hood. It protects up to 9mm and .357 which is what you'll face on the street, is lightweight and able to be worn under clothing to not attract attention, and is also stab-proofed in case your corner meth head's shiv hand gets twitchier than usual.

What do people thing about Cold War era flak jackets? As a poorfag they are the most in my price range and you can get unissued US and German stuff for cheap. Shrapnel is the biggest killer on a modern battlefield is it not?

Swerve, peasant. Best armor coming through.
>>

Their refurbishing consists of adding two extra layers and a new carrier.
I wouldn't trust a used vest, refurbished or otherwise, unless I personally knew who used it and what they did with it. I've seen too many cops leave their shit baking in their trunks on a daily basis - high heat will denature the bonds in kevlar or something like that, and cause it to weaken.
For not much more, you can get some made-in-china vests that actually passed NIJ testing and are imported by relatively credible companies like Bulletsafe or Safelite.
To the best of my knowledge, both of those companies have their armor tested to the older NIJ 101.4 instead of the newer NIJ 101.6 standard, 101.6 is stricter in terms of distance from the edge of the panel, multiple hits in close proximity to each other, and artificial wear and tear on the vests before testing, but either standard is credible and reliable - 101.6 is just an overkill standard compared to 101.4.
If you have doubts, NIJ publishes a list of who's passed testing, so you don't have to take the seller's word for it.

>>34694990
Absolutely not. I wouldn't even trust them to stop a .22.
>>
>>34695370

>Butted
>Galvanized

Thou beist the peasant here sodomite.
>>
>>34694990
I dunno about Cold War but WWII flak jackets barely even stopped flak
>>
>>34695381
Considering some used flak jackets can be 10 bucks any poor fag can have access to one of these old boys. SUPPOSEDLY flack jackets are supposed to stop a 9mm bullet, but I don't own one so I can't say.
>>
>advantages
You can survive being shot now

Your bitch ass is still around to whine at me for the vest being heavy after being shot
>>
>>34695362
>dissing the Bundeswehr flak vest
That shit is like IIIA++, will stop anything that isn't rifle caliber or PDW
>>
>>34695381

I'm not concerned as much with bullets (obviously if I could afford good plates I would get them), but aren't you much more likely to be killed by artillery than gunfire?
>>
>>34695568

I've seen them for as little as $100.
>>
>>34695598
I bought mine for 50€ on ebay!
>>
>>34695598
>>34695603
probably a reason for that
>>
>>34695668
Yeah, because the Bundeswehr used to be a conscription army that cranked a few odd million young lads through the system every year during the 90s, which is primarily when these vests were issued. Everyone needed one, so now there's a massive surplus of vests getting 2old and being sold off.
>>
>>34695592
How much artillery do you expect to receive in a ZOMG WTF FUBAR SHTF TEOWAKI event?
>>
>>34695464
Well, if they're as cheap as 10 bucks, why not buy some and shoot them? Would make for a nice range experiment and video
>>
>>34695668
The reason is that they're surplus. There's plenty of videos on Youtube that prove that they provide II-IIA protection depending on the condition.

>>34695818
>depending on the condition
>>
>>34695686
Realistically speaking, most murders are committed with handguns and at extremely close range. Any halfway serious SHTF scenario must take into account that roving packs of nigras who used to be thugs before the S HTF will be the largest threat, and their loadout likely hasn't changed any. Therefore, a plate carrier actually offers less protection than a flak vest of for example that type >>34695568 since it has all-round torso kevlar coverage instead of just a front and a back plate.

Begone out of sight, plebeian.
>>
>>34695825
Yeah, condition makes a difference. You can examine the vest beforehand if you're buying it in person.

>>34695763
Where are you finding them for $10?
>>
>>34695837
It's like you enjoy having shit coverage.
>>
>>34695837
actually chain was used first and preferred by officers. the locira was the "cheap chink" mass produced armor of the empire offered less protection but was miles easier to make and somewhat lighter.
>>
>>34694990
They are cool as collectables, but they aren't designed to stop rounds. I believe they can potentially stop .22 and some low power handgun rounds, but I would never bet my life on it. Plus the nylon they are constructed with loses effectiveness with age.
>>
>>34695889
*lorica segmentata
lorica just means armor
>>
>>34695889
It was preferred by higher ranking officers since they saw less action than common soldiers.
>>
>>34695877
Perfect coverage if you're fighting barbarians in a phalanx formation.
>>
>>34695956
Lorica hamata was their version of chain mail.
>>
>>34695961
Centurions suffered a disproportionate casualty rate, and literally fought at the front of their unit for the entire battle.

On top of that, the rank and file used chain before, during, and after the use of the segmentata.

>>34695973
Well, it's too bad they didn't do that then.

In a SHTF type of situation people better be prepared for amputation when they apply a tourniquet. because once you cut off circulation the the limb it will quickly start to build up lactic and if you re-establish circulation it could kill the patient without neutralizing it first.
>>
>>34696095
The american ones would protect against lewis gun rounds but i don't know what calibre lewis gun or at what range. But it weighed 20Kg

the british Dayfield body shield would protect against mauser rounds at any range, but was much lighter, more manoeuvrable and the most comfy, as it was a small steel plate over linen glued with resin like the linothorax.

the German ones were hit and miss, some would stop rounds and others would punch right through due to poor consistency of metallurgy.

The German flakvests are made of kevlar and have been shown to stop even 9mm OK.

They're also so cheap that many buy 2 of em and jam both of their armr panels into one vest, making a good poorfag lv IIIA vest.

idea:
take two old IIA police vests you can get for $50
buy m69 flak jacket repro
cut vests to fit doubled up in padding pockets
decent ballistic vest?

A good company for LV4/SAPI-ESAPI plates available to the civilian market is HighCom Security. Wound Channel has a vid of one model stopping greentip iirc.
