>How do you like that polymer stock compared to the wood?

I personally like it better. The wood stock is aesthetic, but the polymer one is much more durable and useful. The fact that you can rotate the cheek rest to whatever position you need it in depending on the optics you are using make it a much better design.

I really like the idea of building something out of a parts kit but I'm not a machinist or anything and I don't really have any tools. What is a good parts kit to do for a beginner that is affordable and what type of tools do I need to be able to build more in the future?

Is the all in cost of building a dragunov/NDM less or more than a $6,500 complete rifle?

Why hasn't anyone created a clone for the US market?

Because there is MR762, which actually just uses a dragunov-style piston system.

Some company did create a .308 drag-o-nov clone. It's actually a great improvement over the original 54r rifle because as Tim from MAC says it offers more accurate ammunition and a greater range of projectiles as well as being more available than 54r

You can find original NDM-86 for about 2500CHF, which is 2580 USD.

What nationality do you want?

>>34694597
just buy one of those $200-250 revolver kits if you're only just getting into black powder and want a pistol.

>>34694611
It depends upon how complicated you want to get. I'd say an Uzi is the easiest. Get a Mckay Enterprises receiver and semi-auto bolt kit, and an uzi parts kit, and its almost like putting an AR together with how easy it is.
I got my Parts kit from Whatacountry, and my barrel and sear from US Barrel Shrouds (along with a few other neat accessories)
http://shop-usbarrelshrouds-com.3dcartstores.com/Full-Size-Semi-Auto-Uzi_c_39.html

If you want to try welding shit together, or cutting/bending receivers, I'd suggest a Sten first, since you can put one together with a dremel and JB Weld.
http://indianapolisordnance.com/products.html

A PPS-43 is also fairly easy to assemble, though I'd rate it one step above a sten in difficulty. A PPSh-41 is almost as easy as a 43, though cutting the bolt for a denial bar (and modifying to a closed system) is a little more complicated than a complete beginner can probably do.

If you want to get into restoring rifles rather than building them, I'd suggest one of the IMA untouched guns. $~500 for a 150+ year old rifle is a hell of a deal and all of mine have cleaned up with barely any effort.

>why isn't 'x' clone created

Simple economics. Sales < Cost of Startup. Even the regular AK domestic market has only became feasible in the past few years (largely thanks to Obama). AK variants will take some time, if they ever develop at all. But you could get one built for less than that, I mean hell you can get a DP28 built for like $2500 IIRC.
>>
Anyone know if Carcano front and rear sights are silver soldered on? I've got a 91/41 that's been bubba'd that I'm going to make into a target rifle because it's accuracy marked (inb4 no bubba no - stock has already been butchered beyond repair). If I can't get the front and rear sights off, I'm tempted to order one of the cheapo Mosin rails (the ones that mount to the rear sight) and rig it up to work. However, that's going to screw up my optic selection.

I only have like $60 total in this gun including transfer fee right now. Getting a bolt from Numrich for $60 and by the time I sell some other parts that came with it, I should at the end of the day be completely done in the 100-125 range sans optic, of which I already have. Going retro with the sight.

It's not really cost effective to build an SVD because there are no bolts or receivers on the market.
What we do for SVD-S conversions is buy a Tigr as a donor rifle and convert it into SVD-S doing a re-weld.

Yeah I know.

As much as I hate ordering from them, sometimes they import good stuff. Their DPM kits had perfect overlapping sections with the Robert Bowman DPM and DP-28 kits, so needless to say I ended up buying two RTI kits just for the overlap sections.

You gonna get on the RP-46 conversions from them? Bought a couple of their barrels, and have an original barrel as well, then getting the semi-parts from them to do the builds.
pretty excited about the RP-46 conversions.
>>

I have a Tec 9 upper and eventually I'll get around to converting it to use the CZ26 mags since those are a fraction of the price of tec mags.

I wish Robert didn't have these priced so damn high, because I want one, but not $500 want one:

>>
>>34700557
Yeah I got five drums as well, though two of them are missing the ring to help with loading, and there's a cut in the barrel shroud.
I'll probably order a DPM kit from Bowman as well if he's still got some.

>>34700355
Not originals, no. They sold out of the new production ones awhile back.

Any issue with Bulgarian 74 kits that you know of? would it be advised to do one of those over an M72?
>>
>>34700621

He does. Plenty. Was looking through his GB account a few minutes ago. Getting those 10k rounds of "salvage" ammo for $900 is tempting but I bet I'd eat several hundred on freight and I'd end up getting 9500 rounds of shit I can't use.
>>
>>34699862
>plz make US receivers and bolts.
If I got my way, I'd make the receiver in house, and contract out all the small parts until I built up enough capital to start expanding into making those parts in house.

So yes, receivers, bolts, carriers, etc. Would all be made as test rifles, tested the shit out of until failure and then evaluated and revised. Then small scale production would begin with rifles hopefully costing around 2500-3000.

That guy on akfiles, sheepdog, is crazy to ask 6k a rifle.
>>
>>34700557
It's not so much about bad luck from Royal, but rather the fact that they are I.O, and the way they screw with the AK community and market is just fucked.

I got three mags with each kit myself from them, and the cuts were in perfect places. it seems all their shrouds are cut, but the bowman kits have uncut shrouds.
>>34700621
they are still making DP barrels right now. One of my friends JUST ordered one like a week ago.

>Any issue with Bulgarian 74 kits that you know of?
RTI only has complete rifles listed I think.
The kits on the rifles are original 74 kits, but they have trash U.S. made barrels and receivers. There was a pretty big incident where they sold a whole batch with gas ports drilled out to 5mm.

Or if you just mean 74 kits in general? I've built a couple hundred and never had an issue with bulgy 74 kits. did get a number that needed oversized barrels from Rguns, but was never an issue.
>>34700708
>2500-3000
if that's true that would be great. I would say unlikely unless you had some serious ramped up production.

I know sheepdog well. He always has a few hundred thousand dollars floating around for crazy projects, he spent $100,000 on reverse engineering an original 1972 produced Russian SVD, so he has every part already engineered for production. The process took 2 years.

Then after getting it done his contractor died and he decided not to pursue the project further, instead just setting the entire thing aside, and only after 5 years (and some persuasion from myself and a couple others to get him to use the files for receiver production) did he decide to see if there was any interest in new manufacture SVD parts, in particular receivers, but his prices are a bit high, although he was quoting me ~$600 per receiver which was something I would pay, but he needed many more people to get on board before he would get the files sent to to a machinist for manufacture.
>>
>>34700956

Holy fuck didn't know these threads existed, I'm in desperate need of help.

This is a Swedish Mauser 1894 carbine, about 100,000 exist. In its full glory these things run for like a grand but some fucker bubba'd it. Restoring it entirely would cost thousands with a stock and everything so I'm going to do a semi-restoration, just simple stuff but things that make it look just like a model 94 at a close glance.

Basically I need three things done, and MAYBE a fourth but I might have to take it to some guy and get a part custom made for me.

1) I need to remove the front sight blade in some way, it's a redfield that's been welded on by bubba. I kinda like the site but I need it removed to carry on with step #2 and I don't know how to do so.

2) I need to install a rear sight, wouldn't/couldn't deal with all the springs and stuff so I went with this complete set I found on eBay: Look at this on eBay http://www.ebay.com/itm/292198011229 I knew I'd never come across another complete set again so I immediately emailed the seller and asked to buy it $10 more than he wanted. This is pretty easy but I need to slide the rear sight base on and can't do that with the front sight welded on. If I get the front sight removed I'll have to either reattach it or just buy a new front sight.

3) I want the stock completely refinished to where it is like a dark walnut color, I also bought an upper forend for $35 and I'm going to send off both pieces of wood to get refinished in the same manner

4) I can't seem to find a barrel band for the M94 (rear or front idk, it's the one that goes over the upper/lower handguard and holds the upper in place) and I don't think the M96/M38 ones work for it. I'm going to see if I can get one made for me, it's only a piece of metal and shouldn't be too hard.

If anyone can help me w/ anything pls

Is the front sight actually welded, or did they just put loctite or something on it? If it's just loctite, you can heat it up with propane or oxy acetylene and it'll come right off. If it's legit welded on there, you're going to have to probably cut it off with a dremel and a cutting disk.

You can refinish the wood yourself. It's not difficult, just time consuming. You can soak the wood in oven cleaner to completely strip off the old finish, or you can sand it all off with 180 grit. Once all the finish is removed, then sand it with 220 then 320 grit. Apply whatever finish you prefer. Danish oil gives a really nice soft finish but doesn't offer much protection. You sand in the oil with the grain at firsyt, then against the grain. The idea is to create a slurry of oil and wood dust which will fill in the grain. You should be using 400 grit by the end. Your other option is a clear finish like Helmsman or chem-pak pro custom oil. This gives you a nice, glossy glass-like finish but it's very labor intensive and time consuming. You start by brushing on a coat of finish (diluted 1:1 with mineral spirits) trying to avoid dripping. Try to get it on there as evenly as possible. Then you sand it with 320 and do it again. You might have to do this 10 times or more before the grain is filled. Each coat you add, use less and less mineral spirits until you're just using straight finish. Once the surface of your wood is uniform, then you want to finish by spraying pure finish on the stock. If it has an orange peel texture, then take a clean sock or rag and use FFF rubbing compound to remove the orange-peel texture until you have a nice glass-like finish.

As far as the parts you need, I check eBay since they often have oddball parts that you can't find anywhere else, then I check Numrich. There parts are low quality but they have tons of obscure shit and their prices are usually reasonable. If you absolutely can't find the piece you need, ask a main shop to make you one. A barrel band shouldn't be too difficult.

Unfortunately, I have nothing for Swedish Mausers right now so I can't help OP. I don't see many of them at all in my region, quite honestly. Two in the past year and I bought one of them because it was a sporter for $100.

>>34703607

Kits I've bought from Numrich over the year have usually been high quality. In fact, they've over fucked me over once in probably 14 years, and that was on a H&R/NEF stock that was sold "new" but had a giant fucking gash in it. They did a refund and sent me a different one, which was fine.

Sometimes you get some really good deals through there. I bought some Jennings Floral Slides years ago, forgot what I paid, but last time I sold one a guy gave me $75 for it. Probably undersold it because the Jennings guys go crazy over those.
>>
>>34703387
If you're not willing to spend several hundred dollars on a glove box, then they make these portable sandblasters for like 80 bucks. I've never used one before so I don't know if they're shit or not. I'd imagine you'd get the media everywhere too. Sandblasting/beadblasting is an extremely fast, easy, and efficient way to prep your metal, but you can prep metal for finishing just using a file and sandpaper. It takes a lot longer and you have to know what you're doing or else you'll end up with uneven surfaces and washed out holes and edges. For someone who is untrained, sandblasting is a better option, but prepping the metal by hand is the "proper" way to do it in my opinion.

20% coupon and sometimes they have coupons for that specific item, so can knock that down further. I know it's Harbor Freight but all of my HF shit works pretty good for the most part. Even my shitty $6 dremel clone does detailed polishing and sanding jobs for me.

I've changed jobs and moved out of a house into an apartment, but I've still got an itch to build guns after selling a bunch of my tools. Would now be an optimal time to apply for a SBR stamp for a PPS43 or uzi or similar build since I won't actually be touching the parts kit until I move back into a house? Do these stamps expire if they aren't "used" after a while?

What kind of welding, and did they do a good job?

If my suspicions are correct, a fine hand and a dreamer should work.
Just make sure you have it chucked up in a way that will NOT mar the finish or bend anything, and ABOVE. ALL. ELSE.
Do NOT, I repeat FUCKING. NOT. Cut towards the barrel. Cut into the sight base in a direction that will NOT potentially hit the barrel.

Then gently sand down the little bit of the weld that's left with sandpaper by hand.
Check here for the parts.
https://www.gunpartscorp.com/Manufacturers/Mauser-33384/Rifles-37349/94Swedish-39202/PartsList-34372.htm
And the wood can be done easily yourself.

>>34709340
Sorry :/ live in WA, had to buy the lower by itself, cant import parts kits.
>>
>>34709530

Now that doesn't make any sense at all. WA has a hard-on for FA FCG's, which would explicitly be your fucking lower and everything else should be kosher. But that's the type of shit that happens when special snowflake states want to enact silly fucking laws.

Looks like you have a rough one. I had probably 10 lowers last year I got real cheap to resell, they were all unissued. That one you have looks like an actual Russian one though. I've never seen a Polish one in that bad of cosmetic shape.
>>
>>34710445
The state considers the bolt and trigger of open bolt guns to be an "assault weapon" part. You can ship individual parts, but since most parts kits include a bolt or FCG, retailers just dont sell any here. The whole state is flagged even if it would be legal.

And yeah, its beat to crap. Im gonna saok it in coke when im done fitting it and then use epoxy to cover the dimples in it, sand it, and then when i paint it you wont be able to tell the difference.

Have you thought about cutting the trunnion and receiver shorter like the Russians did, gets rid of a little extra length and moves the chamber back
>>
>>34712322
Im using some beat to shit bulgarian furniture for it, was really cheap from the files. And yeah, I cut parts off the trunnion so i ould move it back farther, might trim the rails too. The only problem with doing that is that then i have to cut my bcg so the hammer still hits at 90 degrees. Might trim an inch or less

45KB, 760x484px

This picture shows what I'm talking about better, by taking about an inch off the tunnion and receiver you then won't need a huge long chamber diameter area and the boltface/FCG/rails can stay standard.
>>
>>34713569
Right, but im oushing the barrel farther back into the trunnion aswell. So since the operating system is just going to be direct blowback, i have to cut part of the bolt anyway, so i might as well take off a little more to lower my total length

AR-180 barrels. Robert Bowman has new barrels ready to go IIRC. I've thought about a SAR-80 kit but they're just too pricey for the ATF says fuck you cuts that are on the receivers I've seen.

Thought about having Greg Clark build me a CZ-26. He doesn't live too far from me and I've ran into him in the past. Nice man. But saw this on GB and tempted to bid on it. I think I could actually do this one myself.

I've got a couple of the newer kits, including a really old one that doesn't even have a date stamped on the receiver stub, but the cuts are atrocious. Plus I may or may not have "bubba'd" the folding stocks for other projects.
