Officers die in wars and need to be replaced. My great grandfather was a seargeant in the Austrian army when Anschluss happened. He finished the war as a major.

Merit, active combat, high death rates, and enlisted ranks meant very little (same as today). You have SEAL E-8s who are in their early 30s.

Also this was before the USA decided the officer corps was an aristocratic club and banned battlefield commissions.

However he was an Assaultman 0351 at a time when it was being phased on and folded into other 03MOS'. So the cutting scores to get to Cpl were insanely high to the point of impossibility for the amount of years he was in.

I have met several marines who were deployed to vietnam, and one of them said that the policy at the time was get shot= get promotion, one of them said that he got shot 3 times in i think a 6 month period, so he actually made rank faster than he could put the insignia on his uniform

That's wrong. Composite scores are made up of several different categories to determine your ranking among your MOS peer group, PFT score is only a single factor. A first class PFT or even a prefect score is not unattainable. If a Marine misses a cutting score because he can not be bothered to work on his pt maybe he shouldn't get promoted.
