Can we get a thread discussing .223 bolt action rifles? I want to get a cheap one. Looking for recommendations on what to get and what to avoid. Cost is the most important factor, followed by customizability and ease of complete disassembly
OP here. From the research Ive done, Im leaning towards Stevens 200. Though I heard the new Savage Axis is good (think its called Axis 2 or Axis XP). Any reason for me to look for something different, or should one of those fit the bill just fine
Pic in OP is a Stevens 200 in 300 Blackout btw
looking for one of these too. Why is it so hard to find modern bolt rifles with iron sights though?

What features are you after OP?
I've been looking myself, trying to be cheap about it to be honest. I've come across Savage Axis for about $230. I've also seen Thompson Center Compass for about $285(-$75 MIR). The TC Compass has a lot more features: threaded barrel, adjustable trigger, scope mounts.
My biggest hang up is that I don't shoot as often as I used to so I keep guilting myself into not making anymore firearm purchases.

Cz-550 is awesome.
Does anyone else love mannlicher stocks?
I've got a Weather by Vanguard. Got it on sale for $400. Features? I guess it has a 1:9 twist barrel. Which is a requirement if you want to shoot heavy VLD type bullets at really long ranges.
Overall, Its actually really nice. Surprisingly so. Probably my most accurate as well.

Nobody will say it since its an old dog but a Remington 788 ya can't go wrong with

The savage XP is fantastic. Great trigger as well. For the price I think it's pretty unbeatable. My buddy bought one and it shoots great.
if your going to get a bolt gun get a bigger and funner caliber

Id like to be able to easily mount a scope, and maybe bipod. I want to be able to easily disassemble basically the whole thing. Also would like decent aftermarket support in case I want to customize it with a different barrel, different stock, etc.

Like 300 Blackout?
>>34689384
Avoid the Remington 783, mines solid except for the issue where it double feeds. It happened a lot so I use it as a single shot at this point, plus the bolt handle is annoyingly close to the scope.
And theres no aftermarket parts.

I'm having this issue too, I like iron sights but adding them to my rifle would be a pain in the ass.

toplel. no
I've got a remington 700 SPS in .223
Mdt H3s hunter stock
triggertech trigger
Harris swivel 6-9 bipod
Magpul CTR buttstock
Hogue pistol grip
Bushnell 6500 Elite in 2.6x16x55mm tube on top.
It shoots american eagle .223 rounds pretty good, although they're only 55gr....so they spread out a bit. The barrel is a 1 in 9 twist so I'd love to use heavier rounds to see how accurate it can actually get, but for now I'm happy with a 6" gong hit at 300 yards.

>41in drop at 300 yards
>bolt action
lol

i think 223 would be plenty fun. ammo is cheap and plentiful, cases are plentiful and easy to find, recoil is low, trajectory is flat, stopping power is military-tier.
that said, is there a round that shoots a flatter trajectory that you would recommend?

.22-250
Pros
Heavier Bullets
More velocity
More Energy
Less drop
Cons
More recoil
More flash
More Noise
Barrel Throat Wear
Ruined Pelts
.22-250 drops predators in a hurry, .223 is friendlier and cheaper.

yea OP here. Been researching this all pretty extensively. In the spirit of this thread, i have decided to stick with .223.
>>34696595
Fuck .223 get a 5.56
>>34696809
Thanks, never knew that existed. wonder why they chose "ranch" to be the one Ruger American to allow 5.56? I see they have it in 300 Blackout as well, which is neat.
Do you know any other bolt-actions that allow 5.56?
