Is a dog part of your security plan in a SHTF/WROL scenario?
Seems to me something that can smell and hear intruders when the lights go off for a while would be invaluable and worth keeping around.
From my research dogfood only lasts 12 months because of the fat content.

Yes but you must train, train and train your dog or it will be a liability.
Basic obedience with verbal commands and non verbal hand signals -
Sit, stay - "sit" or "ssssssssss" *palm up, move hand up* (stay is implied).
Down, stay - "down" or "local bird call" *palm down, move hand down like effimimate homosexual (stay is implied).
Stop - "whoa" or "shhhhhhh" *palm out directed at dog*
Get it, investigate further, engage - "psssst psssst pssssst" *upwards karate chop in direction of target*
Bring it here/fetch - "bring it here" *downwards karate chop in direction of game/toy*
Leave it - "leave it" *beckoning motion with hand*
Heel, "pace" *slap backside lightly*
Release a bite hold - "OUT!"
Bite/attack - "Fass!"
Commence tracking "seek" *put on harness*
