What is it like? How much difference does the fancy gear like jackets and gloves make?

>>34678328
>>
>>34678328
I do winter biathalon, fancy gear is like anything else. Decent gear is a huge improvement over crappy/no gear and REALLY NICE gear is ten to a hundred times as expensive as Decent gear for mostly marginal improvement. Like anything else.

But don't skimp on your barrel.
>>
>>34678328
It's extremely traditional, and guaranteed to make you a better shooter. You have to be a little autistic to actually enjoy it, though.
fancy stuff makes a tremendous difference, at least in high power.
>>
what is that FUCKING STANCE
>>
>>34680642
Totally normal for competition shooting. You brace your elbow on your hips bone and your rifle on your palm, effectively using your forearm as a bone monopod. You never see it used in combat training because you can't move with it and because you'd just use your environment to brave the weapon. But if you have to shoot standing and unassisted it makes perfect sense.

Where can I read about this sort of gear? What does it do to make you better?

I tried googling it but couldn't find decent search terms in English and there isn't anything in my native language.

Is there another type? The only other similar things I can think of are the Duathlons.

I feel like the trend in shooting sports is at least somewhat analogous to the trend away from boxing and towards mma. Sure the old slowfire competitions where anything over moa probably sucks are good for some fundamentals, but are not by themselves good preparation for gun fighting, just as boxing by itself leaves much of real world fighting out of the mix. I'm not saying IDPA or 3-Gun are going to turn you into a tier 1 operator, but they do at least incorporate more realistic shooting. Even with the clay shooting sports the trend towards realism can be seen by the shifting popularity from skeet and trap to sporting clays and five stand.

Surely there is value in setting up a half-decent match rifle, learning the how, why and when to make a rifle shoot better. Maybe don't dedicate your whole life to it but tinkering with it can't be bad.

If you're willing to travel we have service rifle, biathlon, IDPA, etc down here in Vermont. Most clubs have loaner rifles.
>>

I wish they did here in Socal. When I was in the Marines I was on the Battalion shooting team and that was the best time I had shooting for sport.
>>

If youre nearish Petawawa, we do IDPA every thursday. I also just got my first AR in and my self and a buddy are thinking of starting up some 2 gun at one of the local clubs.

My issue with USPSA or IDPA is the "gamifying" of it. Manufacturer sponsored competitors with their $5000 race guns and they don't even bother to carry all the ammo needed to finish a stage, they have people run fresh mags out to them after or mid stage.

That's fine if the point is to just score points or do stages quick or whatever, but don't call the sport "practical" or whatever when most of the guns used have bullshit that'd never be used on a carry weapon.
>>
>>34681987
You're thinking of IPSC, which is very gamified. IDPA requires comcealment, limits firearm modifications, and has a division for street clothes carry gear.
>>
A local range does competitions
Nothing official but it's fun to get to move and shoot or low light shooting or shooting things that aren't paper in the city since I don't have land

I think Wyoming Antelope Club in St. Pete also hosts official stuff but my work schedule doesn't allot me the free time

I have never seen this, and it's also against the rules.

> 5.2.4 During the course of fire, after the start signal, unless stipulated otherwise in the stage procedure, spare ammunition, magazines and/or speed loading devices shall be carried in retention devices attached to the competitor's belt and specifically designed for that purpose.

So fuck you
>>
>>34681987
That's IPSC. IDPA exists specifically to get rid of that shit.
>>
> 8.6.1 No assistance of any kind can be given to a competitor during a course of fire

Do you have any links about biathlon slings and getting into position?

I shot 3 position in college but we always took forever to get into position. I love how fast you guys pop in and out but my google-fu has been too weak to pull up good info.

Spent probably my best 6 months in the army on my battalion's rifle team. We shot err day, fucked around some and won a lot of shit; it was great. But that's the extent of my competitive shooting experience.

>mfw you'd have to use some midget subcompact in order to get away with fitting a gun with an RMR into The Box to use it in IDPA
I pray someone actually fucking tries it someday, showing up with a Shield to shoot ESP just so they can have their little red dot. It'll be hilarious.

I was in the middle of getting piss tested and got told to go to a certain company office, I had no business there since it was the senior coy so I thought I was in trouble for something but couldn't think what. Turns out it was a brief about the shooting team and I had been put forward by my own company. I said hell yes. The shooting team operated independently (run by the snipers) of companies and the battalion as a whole, they just trusted us to do our own individual PT in our own time since we were shooting from morning till whenever during the working week. Basically in charge of ourselves, showed up in the morning, got our rifles and pistols, fucked off to the ranges and did what we needed to do for the day. 5 days a week. Most chilled out time ever, got treated like an adult for a change and we produced the goods at the end of it, won everything except the army wide comp but placed near the top, which was the best result we'd ever had. Got payed to shoot thousands upon thousands of rounds.

You should see the look when I tel people that my roland is my CC as I get my CC holster out for it when I'm done shooting.

EZ, just put it in the holster. It's like carrying a full size 1911. The RDS does not get in the way at all. My draw is exactly the same as before. The worst part about it is the length of the slide+comp being just slightly

>>34685028

I went to a range one time to do competitive shooting.after i paid the resepsionist my $15, i went to on the range and everyone freaked out over my shoulder holster and "oh you can't carry a loaded weapon on range". fuck comp shooting, the fucking fudds ruin it.

That's the point, geeking out on every detail that makes you shoot better. It has to be instructive if nothing else.
>>
>>34680547
Any cuties?
>>34678328
Depends on the type of competition. If you really want to be competitive, yeah you need the specialized gear for each different division.
But your average /k/ poster is very far from being competitive in any shooting sport. So the best thing you can do is take whatever gear you have now and go and use it and compete as much as you can. Yeah you won't win, but you'll gain skill and confidence in your weapons, and have a lot of fun.
>>
>>34684386
I really haven't found much in the way of formal training materials, just watch and talk to people who are better than me, and practice. Lots of practice. Honestly the heart rate and breath control are harder than getting into position.
