Please, guys, I've asked this in four threads and never gotten a solid answer, just a bunch of arguing. I know plenty about a lot of firearms and I'm a fairly smart guy, and I've read a fair amount about AK's, but just now going ahead to buy one. But I find the noise on /k/ and elsewhere about it to be overwhelming. I just want to know, in the simplest terms possible, what the best starting point would be for me to get an AK.

My budget is anything up to maybe $1k, which I understand would buy me basically any AK that exists that isn't gold plated. I want something that isn't rattly as shit (like every single one I've handled for sale) and is likely to be a reliable buy (e.g. don't tell me "get AK brand x, but 70% work and 30% are ultrashit.")

I don't care a rat's ass if it is new production or modified surplus or has an importer stamp or has red gopherwood handguards or a polymer stock. I care that it shoots 7.62x39, reliably and accurately, and I can find a dozen mags for it.

Maybe some bonus points for new as opposed to used, American made as opposed to weird import, whatever, or fuck those factors if they don't matter. I want a reliable 7.62x39 firearm in the basic AK platform.

I'm starting to think that it's just no one can deliver on that answer because buying an AK is a fucking crapshoot. If someone asked me about an AR build, or a striker fire pistol, or a revolver in .357, etc, I'd have a few good options with one clear winner (in my opinion) at the ready.

You fucking AK fags (yeah, I'm asking for help and insulting you at the same time, I get it, forgive me and then fuck off) don't seem to be able to even name a single fucking brand that the next ten posters don't shit on entirely like you're talking about a loosely functional paperweight.

They're hit or miss. It was my first AK too and the head space was all fucked. Had to send it back, their customer service was fucking terrible to deal with. Once it was fixed it ran fine though. Finish on it was good, a nice glossy black, everything was straight. I'm sure they're OK if you get one that isn't fucked. I sold mine off though.

I bought my AUG a few weeks ago, now I'm eyeing a SCAR. I've got a new AR lower coming in because I wanted a different rollmark and I want to put an aimpoint or 1-6 variable on everything. In a month or two I'll end up swinging back towards AKs and I'll end up with either another 104fr or a 106.

Whatever "budget" I had before is fucking gone. I just want a shitload of different guns. God help me when I start buying pistols again. I already need a bigger safe but I have nowhere to put it, so I'm considering just buying another smaller one and keeping it in a different area of my home.

AK's were meant to be churned out by the millions by massive state owned factories to arm a gargantuan conscript army to zerg rush Europe after a nuclear barrage. AR's were meant to be easily producible everywhere from military bases to small mom-and-pop gun shops, ensuring that even after a nuclear attack on critical elements of production the supply chain for rifles would never be totally disrupted.

These doctrines continue more or less, and neither side has found the need to change them, thus you won't see much change in either rifle aside from a few upgrades here and there.

It's hard to describe, but having the sling on the gun makes it feel weird to me now. It's not the same as it feels on my Maadi, even though the Maadi is set up the same way.
