That's... Actually a decent idea. Cheap to adquire and maintain, and has a very decent patrol capability (or would have with maybe 3 helis). Throw in a couple RHIBs and you have a very decent patrol and interception platform on the cheap.

On the other hand it is still a cargo ship manned by civilians and according to the team on the helicopter they were attacked by Somali pirates who thought its just a cargo ship.
I would like to see their face when they realized they just went after a ship with a bunch of navy special forces team on board.
It also served in Sabah as sea base for a while before being replaced by this refurbished oil drilling platform.
Look up Tun Sharifah Rodziah sea base, its nothing fancy but since it started operation just south of the Philippines we haven't had Abus kidnapping for a while now.

Since UMNO are back after the PAS state leadership, it really seems like they've been investing in electoral bribes. At this point, the PLAN doesn't fear small surface vessels. They are only useful to the Philippines as peacetime tools to enforce maritime law, effectively coast guard. What China will fear is modern submarines and an asymmetric minelaying capability.

I read the Chinese media. I can tell you what the Chinese think about Philippines - Chinese officials are studying the Marawi siege closely, and were shocked at the incompetence of the Philippine military.

They find it unbelievable that the country can simply lose control of a major city for 3 months. Chinese planners believe that the attack should have been ended within 12-16 hours. In the event of a conflict, China will simply arm the separatists in the south and sow domestic chaos within the Philippines, while using its navy to protect Sabah and keeping Malaysia as an ally.

The Aquino administration was pretty aggressive in pursuing military deals because of the complete neglect of previous administrations as well as a reaction of China taking Scarborough Shoal.
