Also, don't buy a milsurp as a first rifle. Get an AR since they are, for the most part, cheaper to buy, cheaper to feed, and can be modified much more easily and cheaply as well.

I love milsurp, but you want your first gun to be something that you can grow into (skill-wise), something you can afford to shoot often, and something that won't cause you to develop a flinch.

Personally, I prefer the action on my mosin to my kar98k. But I prefer(not by much) the irons on my kar98k. They'll both be fun as hell though, but ammo isn't cheap for either of them any more.
I'd consider something in 762x39 like an sks or wasr since that's kindof my minimum caliber I consider fun. And it's pretty cheap to shoot.
I would not start with 22lr as some suggest, it's just not that fun to shoot, and you are going to be much happier with a "cool" gun that gives you a boner every time you look at it.
22cal pellet guns are for cheap plinking and practice, but 22lr is actually making a comeback finally. So maybe it'll be relevant again soon.

If you never had a gun, a .22 is great for a beginner: get a milsurp only if you find a really good price for future use.

Sorry, I forgot to mention that I have $250 saved up for ammo and cleaning tools, and $150 saved up for no real reason that I can use.

Well if I get a .22 to start like 34673732 said should I get a bolt action rifle because most milsurp uses bolts, or should I get a semi auto like a 10/22? What will help me become a good shot?

Don't listen to these guys. Milsurp rifles are plenty decent for a first rifle.

8mm Mauser isn't that expensive, especially compared to 30-06/308 (the only other cartridges worth shooting in a commercial bolt action) and the M48 itself is solid.

Ignore the Mosin, they're not worth it anymore unless you're a collector and it's a rare piece.

uhhh, tulammo 308 is barely over 30c/r before shipping, nothing else compares from what I've seen

Because we're all pretty young, or at least relatively young here and we have the chance to easily cut decades off of our exposure. The sooner you start protecting yourself the better though.
