What would be best for a frost rifle: an M48 muser or an ex-dragoon mosin? The mosin has much cheaper ammo, but the m48 seems like a better gun.
>>
>>34671034
First*** not frost, sorry
>>
I'm open to other suggestions for good first guns if they are milsurp and if they are under $650
>>
>>34671034
.22lr first
>>
>>34671034
Neither, milsurp make bad first rifles. Get an AR or a 22.
>>
You can literally get cheaper commercial bolt actions in comparable, cheaper cartridges.

My first rifle was unironically a GSG .22 STG-44 that I bought on a whim at a hunting store

Mauser by far. Mosin Nagant is garbage.
>>
>>34672384
This is true. I own both and the Mausers action is smoother as is the trigger pull.

The problem is this comes down to personal preference. I would find a gun range you can rent firearms at and try before you buy.
>>
>>34671034
>Milsurp meme
Get an AR15 or get a ~400 dollarydoo bolt action with 200dollarydoos of shitty glass like a Nikon prostaff 3, 5, or 7
>>
>>34671034
Well bow is a bad time to buya surplus rifle as your first rifle.prices are high, ammo is uncommon and expensive.you might as well buy a ar15,in the long run it will be cheaper.
>>
>>34671034

damn.... seeing that symbol so clean makes me quite happy OP.. do take care of her

Oh she has a great life with me, here she is, sans cleaning rod.

Also, don't buy a milsurp as a first rifle. Get an AR since they are, for the most part, cheaper to buy, cheaper to feed, and can be modified much more easily and cheaply as well.
>>
Get an AR or a 22
I love milsurp, but you want your first gun to be something that you can grow into (skill-wise), something you can afford to shoot often, and something that won't cause you to develop a flinch.

Go to a pawn shop, buy a used deer rifle. Use the money you save on ammo and/or a scope and shoot away to your hearts content

AR15 you little bitch
M&P15s are like $450 nib right now, do it faggot
>>

Sorry man, the pawn store owner got real pissed when I tried to take a picture
>>
I just don't have an interest in non historical rifles
>>
>>34673660
Me neither, but I still recognize the fact that I need to get a GOOD .22 so my poorfag ass can actually afford to get out there and COMFORTABLY develop marksmanship skills.

Go to Sportsman's Guide . com, get a buyer's club membership; next pick a .22 and order it using the 4 payment plan along with ammo too; then use the extra money to buy 1 cheap milsurp so you can get one before it gets even more expensive; use any remaining money of the 600 on good cleaning tools.

Personally, I prefer the action on my mosin to my kar98k. But I prefer(not by much) the irons on my kar98k. They'll both be fun as hell though, but ammo isn't cheap for either of them any more.
I'd consider something in 762x39 like an sks or wasr since that's kindof my minimum caliber I consider fun. And it's pretty cheap to shoot.
I would not start with 22lr as some suggest, it's just not that fun to shoot, and you are going to be much happier with a "cool" gun that gives you a boner every time you look at it.
22cal pellet guns are for cheap plinking and practice, but 22lr is actually making a comeback finally. So maybe it'll be relevant again soon.
>>
>>34673630
Eh it's cool bro, but if the guy didn't want you to take a picture of a gun that YOU wanted to buy wand were willing to drop some money on, I would't shop there, because he obviously doesn't care about his customers that much (in my opinion).
>>
>>34673732

This man knows what's up.

If you never had a gun, a .22 is great for a beginner: get a milsurp only if you find a really good price for future use.
>>
Sorry, I forgot to mention that I have $250 saved up for ammo and cleaning tools, and $150 saved up for no real reason that I can use.

I've owned 3 mosin and only one functioned properly
I've had six mausers with no issues.
2 smle with no issues
Take that how you like
>>
>>34673660
I got bit by this bug too. I still suggest getting a commercial gun if only because if you dick it up you can easily fix it or buy another one.

If you absolutely must get a milsurp gun get a Mosin, we have too many cut up Mausers.
>>
Well if I get a .22 to start like 34673732 said should I get a bolt action rifle because most milsurp uses bolts, or should I get a semi auto like a 10/22? What will help me become a good shot?
>>
>>34671281
>>34671381

Don't listen to these guys. Milsurp rifles are plenty decent for a first rifle.

8mm Mauser isn't that expensive, especially compared to 30-06/308 (the only other cartridges worth shooting in a commercial bolt action) and the M48 itself is solid.

Ignore the Mosin, they're not worth it anymore unless you're a collector and it's a rare piece.
>>

You know you can get an /unissued/ sks for 450 right? They'll even clean the Cosmo off for you for 10 bucks
>>
>>34677054
>8mm Mauser isn't that expensive, especially compared to 30-06/308
uhhh, tulammo 308 is barely over 30c/r before shipping, nothing else compares from what I've seen
but once you get into 308, your gun options goes down quickly if you want milsurp
>>
>>34676249
Either. The fundamentals don't change.
>>
>>34677122
>They'll even clean the Cosmo off for you for 10 bucks
I'd buy that service every time, cosmoline is a pain in the ass and paying to get it removed is far better than the uncomfortably dry skin and future cancer it'll give you.
>>
>>34677126

>Tulammo .308

Why would you do this?
>>
>>34671258
No, No. No. Fuck this particular bit of fuddlore right here. Get what you want and learn to shoot it. The M48 is a good gun, get it if you want. The ex-Dragoon has more history, if that's your sort of thing.

W-what, that's not true is it?
>>
>>34677292
Does it's ammo cost <$0.10 rnd, because he's gonna need to burn some bricks to get gud.
>>
>>34677319

No more than touching any of the other oil and shit you use during regular cleaning.

It's not like you're eating it.
>>
>>34677296
Steel-cased is okay for AK/SKS pattern rifles. They are beaters straight from the factory. Just don't run it through anything with tighter tolerances,
>>
>>34677292
>>34677122
>>34677054

Getting a milsurp as your first rifle is like trying to teach yourself to shoot hoops from the three point line on the basketball court.
>>
>>34677328
>No more than touching any of the other oil and shit you use during regular cleaning.
>It's not like you're eating it.
And thats why I wear dishwashing gloves cleaning guns, and gloves during all work I do on farm machinery etc, shit's nasty for you in the long term.
>>
>>34671034

My first gun was a .22 lr

The first gun I bought was a 12g

Buy a .22 if you want to learn to shoot.
12g is very adaptable and cheap to shoot but not great to learn shooting on.
>>
>>34677332

It's really not.

>>34677333

I started wearing disposable gloves for cleaning but it's really not something to worry about if you haven't.
>>
>>34677292
Yes, no recoil and cheap ammo is fuddlore. How foolish we all are.

>>34677331
I'd buy it for anything, whether I buy it in quantity for said gun depends how well it works.
I have one other 308 toy, but I haven't tried tulammo through it yet. I don't expect any problems though.
>>34677363
>but it's really not something to worry about if you haven't.
Because we're all pretty young, or at least relatively young here and we have the chance to easily cut decades off of our exposure. The sooner you start protecting yourself the better though. It's like radon gas in basements, you don't have to take care of it, but why wouldn't you protect yourself if you knew you had it?
>>
>>34677403

I don't disagree, I just think it's a bit much to make people think they'll get cancer for touching a bit of cosmoline or because they oiled their guns.
>>
>>34677427
It's not up to me whether you want to roll the dice a bit more for convenience. Just saying, I think it's worth protecting yourself when you can.
>>
>>34677363
>It's really not
But it is.
>sights are far from ideal
>kick is distracting for a newb
>ammo isn't cheap
>triggers usually suck
>usually won't hit the point of aim

All of that adds up to an unpleasant and discouraging experience for someone who is trying to build their fundamental skill set.
