There is nothing to assume that they'd support or oppose your right to Mexican-carry a USP loaded with .45 Super wadcutters or somesuch. You're also forgetting that even if they turn out to be fudds (there really needs to be another name that doesn't have the hunting/long guns with wood furniture and maybe cowboy guns connotations), it still presents a wedge and opportunity to develop a position supporting more expansive gun rights in a person who might otherwise be entirely anti-gun and with no reason to engage with the firearm/shooting community. The only way to change someone's opinion is through information and debate, but you must engage them first. The fact that by owning a gun they'll have a vested economic interest in keeping it also helps.

I think you're correct in a theoretical vacuum where private and public discourse are the same, but that really isn't the case. Gun advocacy groups can only appeal to so many people and there are always threads about the injustice of a case that wasn't given a chance to be seen because the powers-that-be decided it was a fight they couldn't win. What if there were a huge flood of people that have considered a live-and-let-live approach but decided to stick with a me-not-thee one. Suddenly you have a large group that you can claim easy victories for while marginalizing the old group that actually called you to task. At the same time, this new group will say they want expansion of their ability to have micro-guns and are willing to cut into other gun rights to do it. Now the guys who talk for a living have a directive to work against their old constituents. Now you have a situation where the private discussion of firearms has continued to be free, but the public one has restricted. It's a very possible scenario. I don't think the Spectrum will do this, nor the idea of Apple guns, but they are step-stones on a path. Gun culture, despite Fudds that are more marginalized every day, is in a very good place right now and we should respect the work necessary to maintain that and not just assume things will always get better.

While I agree with your implication that the founding fathers would update the constitution to better accommodate today's technologies. I don't believe they would attempt to restrict firearm ownership.
They knew that the governments main purpose was to serve the people's well being, and not the other way around. But the possibility of not serving the people's well being could be solved with a well armed populace.
The founding fathers were aware of semi, and even full auto guns. They also supported people having ships with artillery which rivaled that of the Navy. No tax stamps needed.
They implemented a system which would allow us to amend the constitution as we(the people) saw fit, as they knew that a constitution set in stone, would quickly become outdated. Otherwise known as amendments, which the second specifically says
