I am looking to get a Yugoslavian M48 Mauser, but I've never bought a military surplus rifle, or any dated rifle for that matter. What should a buyer focus on when looking for an older rifle?
I assume excessive pitting, poor bore/rifling quality, loose action and obvious stock damage would be the big ones, but anything else I should be mindful of?

Matching serial numbers, accessories included (bayonet, cleaning rod, sling, etc.) and replaced parts come to mind as things to look out for.

When buying an m48 know that there are essentially 4 models. There is the m48, m48a, m48b (still designated a on the receiver ring), and m48 bo. The m48a took on stampings in order to cheapen the production of the rifle, the m48b takes this further, and the BO is unmarked, essentially an unmarked a or b. The A has a stamped floor plate and trigger guard, the B a welded H ring and stamped floor plate and trigger guard. The regular m48 is all milled. The stocks also vary. Try to get one stocked in elm as the yugo beech they used seems like it dings easily. Trench art is usually indicative of some service in the balkan conflicts in the 90's.

Thanks! Any idea what a reasonable price for an M48 in good condition would be?
