Could the abundance of APC's, VBIED's and Lightly armored vehicles in modern combat open up a place for Heavy anti-tank rifles/light AT guns with modern sabot rounds in the armory of asymmetric/second rate armies?

pros
-Covers the range gap between Infantry AT weapons and ATGM's
-Vastly Cheaper and sustainable operating costs versus ATGM's etc.
-Accurate
-Can be mounted on light vehicles for shoot and scoot ability (even some ATV's)
-Useful against not just vehicles but hard points, infantry positions and could even be used in a long range counter sniper role provided sufficient range and accuracy.
-Effective against APS systems and HEAT deforming armor

Pic related is an Iranian Heavy AT/anti material rifle that weighs about 62 kg and fires 23mm shells up to 3-4km.

stop forcing this meme. This thing weighs like 2.5kg and is going to be better at killing vehicles than any AT rifle with a way smaller footprint.

Came here to say this. Smaller recoilless launchers have taken it's place

Something about seeing modified M256s with their own stationary mount always tickled me a little bit.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steyr_IWS_2000
>The projectile is a 15.2 mm fin-stabilized discarding-sabot type with armor-piercing capability which the IWS 2000 was specifically designed to fire. It contains a dart-shaped penetrator of either tungsten carbide or depleted uranium, capable of piercing 40 mm[1] of rolled homogeneous armor at a range of 1,000 m, and causing secondary fragmentation. The cartridge consists of a plastic case, a steel head, and a plastic sabot shell around the penetrator.

> Of special note are the new Chinese armor-piercing types:[4]
>DGJ02: AP-T cartridge uses a 45 g tungsten penetrator, wrapped in a discarding sabot (similar to the US military SLAP cartridges) with dual colour tracer to aid ranging. The sabot splits and leaves the penetrator between 150 and 200 m from the muzzle. It has a muzzle velocity of 1,250 m/s and is quoted as being able to penetrate 20 mm of armour plate set at an angle of 60° at 1000 m.

Government will classify them as destructive devices. Anzio makes a commercial 20mm that would be effective at disabling armored vehicles with apfsds ammunition. A recoilless rifle would be better without legal restrictions.
>>

The APC's themselves are equipped with these
The 25mm SABOT on a Bradley are rated to even penetrate tank armor

>dual colour tracer to aid ranging
so midway on the flight path the tracer burns a different color after a specific time of flight? Are there any other ammo types that so this?
Also with the sabot discarding after 150m does that make the round useless against armor within that range? I'm sure the sabot would still punch through soft targets that close.

>>34667854
Why are they called anti tank rifles when they can't take out actual tanks?

except small recoilless weapons are falling behind APS and HEAT protection systems.

For example a lightly armored Stryker or up-armored Humvee can survive multiple RPG's, whereas a high velocity 14.5mm would slice through either of them.

what exactly do you mean?
