In the Soviet Afghan war the Muj would skin captured Soviet soldiers alive from the feet up to their shoulders, then tie their skin around their head and leave them (either already dead or soon to be dead) to be found by the Soviets. The Soviets called it the "bloody tulip" or something along those lines.
