The unarmored cars don't offer reliable "Cover" from the type of heavy automatic rifle fire they were getting hit with.
The were literally sitting in the open, on the "X" for 15+ minutes and making themselves perfect targets
According to the reports I saw, only one of those 3 vehicles had any armor at all.

There are a couple of pretty good documentary/analysis videos of the incident on YT.
Part of it eludes to the idea that retreating from the vehicles position to the ditch is an advisable tactical maneuver. And he did still manage to kill two of the nearby insurgents and went to the aid of his fallen comrade as soon as the fire fight allowed.

Long story short, the guy in charge maybe did a shitty job and led them into a shitty situation.

I talk to my neighbors about things, but they don't ask questions. Never once have I had an interaction related to guns go negatively.
