There is no reasonable task that will break the knife though. Things like prying, chopping and driving the knife through wood with a baton is abuse.

My only complaint is that I think they should have shot a little lower on the price tag, maybe $90ish. Everything else is pretty appropriate for what it is, an ultra light edc.

After market handle options will probably be available if the knife gets popular since people aren't too fond of plastics ones.
>>
EDC knife for under $35 please? Something medium sized.

Also EDC multitool please. Spring loaded pliers a must, and a knife that can be deployed one handed. Thanks!

Camillus was one of the oldest American knife companies, but went bankrupt sometime in the mid 2000s. They were resurrected a few years ago by a Chinese company to cash in on its name. They basically just make cheap 20-30 dollar knives now.

I believe yours is one of the new Chinese ones.

I got the Al Mar off of Knifeworks. As for the SOG it is one of my favorite knives (if you couldn't tell by the wear) and easily in my top 3-5 folders in my collection which is fairly large and diverse. I beat the hell out of that thing it's still working fine.
>>
>>34668440
not the guy youre replying to but when was the last time you had a gerber knife? multitool? theyre garbage. most of the time they dont say what steel the knife is made out of, whatever it is it usually cant hold an edge. not a single folder I've had from them i was able to adjust pivot screw (I've had 5 from 2004-2010 in the $15-70 range)
the multitools literally fall apart, retaining locks fly off, files snap, plastic is shit and cracks, wire cutters get fucked on med gauge copper wire. I've never bought one, but Ive gotten 3 of them for free.

theyre basically chinkshit except for probably a few of their top-of-the-line, where you might as well buy ZT or protech or fucking anything else

What are knife laws like there?

A safe choice would be something like the Spyderco Spy-DK, which was designed for Denmark knife laws. I don't know if Netherlands and Denmark knife laws are similar, but a non-locking, non one-handed opening should probably be okay unless you're in Amsterdam.

Haven't been around /ktg/ in a while, but this question is right up my alley. I just recently picked up a Boker Exskelibur I that goes right with this theme. Several people mentioned it probably being the thinnest behind the edge modern production folder ever made, so I had to get one.

They weren't kidding, either. Pic related is with a 10 degrees per side edge bevel. The blade geometry is even thinner than the Spyderco Spydiechef.

I prefer thin blades with thin geometries because they have much better cutting performance. It's not like I need a stout blade for EDC use. Hell, one of my favourite custom knives is 0.060" thick at the spine and ~0.08" behind the apex in 1095 at ~62 HRC.

great knife. Cuts like a charm, and I mostly use it for opening toner packs (HP have really outdone themselves with the packaging for LJ m402 toner - hard plastic heated together), and other IT stuff.

>>

>S35vn at 57 hrc like reeve did is inexcusable.
That's not even as bad as when we was grossly under hardening s30v to ~55 hrc.

The continued popularity of Chris Reeve Knives is a towering testament to how large a segment of the folding knife buying community are collecting pocket jewellery and couldn't care less how useful their knives are at actually cutting things.
>>
>>34685277
>collecting pocket jewellery and couldn't care less how useful their knives are at actually cutting things.
why are you so upset about people who have expendable income?
>>
>>34685277
well, you can still cut at 55 hrc - i have swords that are 50 hrc. Then again - they are nowhere near as sharp as a high end 62hrc knife, and impact cutting is something else entirely.

The really inexcusable part is where he was using a high end steel, and running it at such a low hardness. And i'm not buying the excuse that he wanted his knives easy to sharpen. How fucking hard is it to buy a lansky turnbox with diam rods and give the knife a few passes? A friggin monkey could do it.
>>
>>34685306
we're not upset - it's just amusing, since if you buy a knife, something like cutting performance should be pretty high up on the list of qualities a knife should have.
>>
>>34685340
you seem upset
>>
>>34685306
>why are you so upset about people who have expendable income?
Yes, I must be poor because I want my knives to actually be good at cutting things, and get annoyed at all the people who encourage the worst tendencies in the modern knife industry by rewarding them with sales.

>>34685324
>well, you can still cut at 55 hrc
The issue is that steels like s30v suffer some pretty severe issues when under-hardened that severely. The short version is that the carbides in s30v are much harder than steel, so a target HRC of 55 means that the steel matrix around the carbides will end up significantly softer than 55 HRC and become extremely prone to edge rolling and carbide tear out.
>>
>>34685372

>>
>>34685382
I'm upset because fewer knives I would like to purchase even get made because knife makers can make more money selling overly thick and under-hardened knives that are much easier and cheaper to heat treat, grind and QC.

If the majority of hammer makers made decorative hammers that were mediocre at best for use in the tool's intended role but sold extremely well to decorative hammer collectors, I'd be annoyed too.

Never trust a knife sharpener with a powered sharpener, in fact never trust a knife sharpener in general with out asking questions first. Ask how they sharpen, how long have they been doing it, what kind of people they sharpen for normally, what kind of knives they sharpen normally, and if possible ask to see a freshly sharpened knife or some pictures of their work.

And almost always, have them sharpen a "test" knife first, one you don't really care for. Almost all new clients of mine will do this, send something like a $30 Victorinox kitchen knife before their $200+ Japanese ones.

One of the reasons I have so many pictures of my knives, it's kind of a portfolio of my work.

>>34688733
I forgot to specify... Not all powered sharpening is bad, if the sharpener knows what they are doing.

If I'm working on a knife that needs major re-profiling, I normally do the rough work on my 1x30 belt sander, before the stones, being very careful to not let the blade heat up beyond warm to the touch.

The Work Sharp can be a good sharpener if you take time to practice on cheaper knives, and learn not to roll the tip.. although be very careful with very thin knives, they heat up very fast on the edge.

Also there are some completely "safe" (any sharpening stone/set up can fuck up a knife if used wrong) motorized set up. The Tormek like sharpener, with a very low RPM, large, stone that spins in a trough of water.

I'm thinking about getting a Tormek T8 one day for mass sharpening, but at around $950, they are no joke.

Most factory edges are not that good... But you missed my whole other post: >>34688799

Also, there is a big difference between a manufacturer and/or experienced sharpener vs. a guy with a grinder. The Manufacturer has a very good understanding of tempering and heat treatment, they know, and automate, exactly how long a blade can be on the sharpener before it would get too hot. And the experienced sharpener at lest knows not to get things too hot to touch comfortably.

I know powered sharpening is perfectly viable, I've seen it done several times beforehand. I just made the mistake of assuming the guy knew what he was doing without asking. Didn't think about bringing a test knife for that reason, though if I'd thought of it I would've just given him an Opinel or something to try first.

The only thing I thought was strange was that he didn't have anything to cool the blade off with should that have been necessary. I learned all about the whole 'burning the temper off the blade' thing first hand by sharpening a $5 machete on a grinding wheel. Still not sure if that would've been needed, but it ticked a box.

On the bright side, the tip is not pointy but it is sharp. I haven't noticed any difference in my ability to punch through boxes and such, but I attribute that to the point now being an edge in itself. The only real difference is that the blade looks horrible now, to the point where I carry either an Endura 4 or a Griptilian.

>>
>>34691804

>>
>>34691271
It can take them awhile to reply but they usually deliver. I've got pocket clips and screws from them on plenty of occasions. Might try contacting them if they don't respond in two weeks or so.
>>
>>34691830
The Sharpmaker is pretty good at bringing a dulling but not completely dull knife back to life and maintaining a good edge.

If your edge is completely fucked up, the Sharpmaker is not the best tool since the stock stones aren't coarse enough to do the job in a timely manner (key word "timely").

The only time I think a casual user would need to reprofile a pocket knife is if the factory grind is uneven enough to affect use. It'd take awhile with the stock stones, but it's doable and you shouldn't need to do it that often There are also some cheap ways you can do to speed up the process without having to buy the coarse stones.

Basically you need to ask whether or not you're going stay a beginner. If you think you're going to fall down the rabbit hole of the knife world and end up experimenting with various steels, grinds, etc., it may be worth investing into more serious sharpening equipment. If you're just going to sharpen a couple of knives now and then for EDC, the Sharpmaker's a fine choice.
>>
>>34692464
Thanks, this is probably one of the best responses to either my own or other people's posts. I think I'll go with the sharpmaker for now and that should be good enough for now then eventually I can get a wicked edge or edge pro when I have knives that are even half the price of those systems since Itll still have a use if I get them.

If all you are using it for is basic utility when you need it most Kershaw models should be fine.

I use a Spyderco Ambitious since its a beater knife I use for work and is small enough to fit in my pocket alongside my keys and a pen. Like it more than my endura simply because its more wieldy as a cutting device. I can also abuse it and not have to worry about losing a 100 dollar investment.

My old pocket knife fell into a river when I was camping a few days ago. What's a decent, cheap, EDC knife I can use to open packages and whatnot. Not looking for a weapon, just a tool. Looking at the black cat as it looks nice and is pretty cheap.

Mercators are great just keep in mind they don't have a lot of modern features like a pocket clip or easy one handed opening/closing mechanisms.

Good for sharpening up knives that have been ground shit form the factory, but it fucks up the heat treatment and after using it freehanding that edge is a nightmare, and the sharpmaker onyl gets it sharp enough instead of super sharp.

Ok backup if you manage to get that rare shitty knife from good manufacturers and live in bumfuck nowhere where warranty does not send you another one as a replacement

When did I say that? Just don't let the blade get hot in the first place, it's light pressure on a soft belt, not holding it to an angle grinder. At no point should even the very apex of the edge get hot enough to be more than warm to touch.

>the wire edge is a nightmare
Someone does not understand the concept of progressive grits, with each grit increase the burr ("wire edge") becomes smaller and smaller... and then you "break the burr" or strop it out. And once again, you don't push down on it like a fucking caveman, a little force goes a long way.

>Oh well you'll see for yourself but don't come running and crying after being told so

I'm sorry you don't understand the concept of machine belt sharpening... In no means is it the best way of doing things, but it's not bad if you aren't a complete idiot about it. Most custom knife makers, and nearly all production knives are sharpened via a high rpm machine.

The TL;DR is that active liquid cooling is required while power sharpening on belts to avoid messing up the heat treatment to a depth of a few microns--which is the entire thickness of the apex--and thereby ending up with an inferior apex to that which can be obtained by hand sharpening on lubricated whetstones.

Whew boy, fun argument going on here.

The majority of my work is free hand or with a set angle set up, I tend not to use motorized sharpeners at lest on knives. But if a knife has significant edge damage, and needs to be reset, I do use my 1x30 sander.

I'm curious what you all think of this; I do the rough work with the 1x30 but then sharpen the rest by hand or wicked edge. At lest my goal is to remove the effected material while sharpening by hand, but I don't know if I am removing enough.

Mostly though I use my 1x30 for lawn mowers, machete's, cheaper axes... things that I'm not trying to get peak edge holding performance out of.

>>34722737
>active liquid cooling
I'm considering investing in a Tormek T8 to replace my belt sander for fine edge re-profiling

>>34721991
Not sure what you are getting with the "wire edge", creating a burr is not unique to power sharpening. In fact burr to burr sharpening is the basics. Pic related was done completely on my belt sander, temper aside, I assure you it does not have a wire edge.

Almost not a knife. Opens in your pocket. The Japs literally used them to sharpen pencils.

For EDC I like a small aluminum-scaled SAK. High quality, non-threatening. I use it every day.

>I'm curious what you all think of this; I do the rough work with the 1x30 but then sharpen the rest by hand or wicked edge. At lest my goal is to remove the effected material while sharpening by hand, but I don't know if I am removing enough.

To clarify, there are two types of heat damage you can cause to an edge by power grinding without active liquid cooling: The first is the macro scale kind of detempering caused by mercilessly power grinding a knife until sparks fly and causes damage that cannot be fixed without removing quite a bit of material afterwards. The second is only a few microns in depth and happens when dry power grinding is done carefully. This is a problem if you are putting a finished edge on a knife with it because "a few microns depth" is the whole thickness of the apex, but that also isn't that much material you'd have to remove to get to fresh steel underneath.

As long as you are doing a decent amount of work by hand after you are done on the 1x30 and you were careful on the 1x30, it shouldn't be an issue.

As for active liquid cooling, a lot of custom knifemakers have started using belt grinders that spray a continuous stream of coolant onto a blade while it's being ground exactly for the purpose of avoiding damage to the HT. Spyderco's Golden Co factory also uses a liquid cooled computer controlled grinder to put edge bevels on their Golden produced models.

False: I also use my folders for food prep, cutting up plastics in addition to cardboard. I also optimize the knives I buy for that type of work by using thin blades with low edge bevel angles. Pic very related.
