As far as I know, the CAR stock is the lightest stock that can fit on a standard receiver extension, by almost an ounce. To get lighter you would need to switch to those horrifically uggo one-piece peg-leg contraptions, which are not adjustable and as stated are catastrophically gross to look at.

It will be some time before I have enough disposable to throw at an optic. Looking at 1-6x and 2-10x offerings from trijicon IOR, Steiner and NF right now. I know the rifle isn't pretty, but the barrel and internals are actually pretty decent. If I'm able to find someone that wants to buy the upper I wouldn't mind doing that, but I'd want to have a specific upper in mind to change to before switching it out. I want to sell off a bunch of old parts, but a lot of them aren't really worth the effort. Happy to take any suggestions you have though. Thanks.

It's great actually, for 200-240 I'd say it's a good buy. Very low profile. I'm taking it to the Upper Peninsula next week to really put it through its paces though, what I have noticed is that it could use better padding on the shoulder straps for long term stuff, but that's like 20$ from Crye if you decide you need it. In its current state, it really doesn't hinder mobility at all. Once I add an IFAK, Radio pouch and a water bladder on I don't really think that will change.

I've been looking at Ar-10s for my first SAPR. I want to hear /k/'s opinion on the subject.

The Armalite Defender 10 seems like the best value. I could get a lopro gas block and a free float handguard and be set. Are there any negatives to this gun? I can't find much negative info online.
Should I drop extra cash to get the Tac version with all the accoutrements, or wait even longer and dump on a POF?
I would love a Noveske but then we're talking SCAR prices and I don't think my usage could warrant that much money.

Uhhh basically it comes down to the fact that their locking mechanism is tension based and completely falls apart during moderate use.

I have personally had one of their Gen2 rails come loose twice, while loctited and torqued to their specs.

I have seen a buddies Gen3 rail get knocked out of alignment by simply tipping over while it was propped against a desk.

Get an angle grinder, a cutoff wheel, and a grinding wheel. Remove the delta ring, spring, and snap ring. Don't dick up the barrel nut. Then remove the retainer cap. Then trim the FSB down to a low profile gasblock. Then install the clamp on free float of your choice.

I did it. Super easy. When you're done grinding give it a spray of high temp engine paint.

Hard mode would be not to remove the gas tube while you grind. Don't play hard mode.

They're much faster than removing a QD and flipping up irons or using a throw lever, but I've definitely been considering switching back to irons. I would love to get the M&P10 for the 18 inch barrel but it has proprietary gas system, proprietary tube length, proprietary charging handle. I am thinking about making an AR10 build and debating between a 6.5 CM or 308. Then I thought that I could get a dedicated upper with a light "okayish" barrel to plink away at 200-300m with cheap as dirt 308 ball ammo and then get a heavier and nice 18"+ barrel and a upper specifically for percision distance stuff with quality 6.5 ammo. The stock, lower, magazines should be fine for either configuration.
