Police departments may offer better bennies, depending on where you live. A cop in my city is guaranteed to make ~70,000 by his fourth year of service. The highest paid detective is paid well over 100k. You also get guaranteed pension after 15 years, dental coverage for you and your family, etc..

This. Deploying sucks. If you're in the police, at least you get to see friends/family whenever you want. Downside is, is you gotta deal with people hating you and high stress situations. You see these people at the lowest part of their day, and you are either there for them or because of them. K-9 trainer is a very exclusive role in the military.

In LE you need seniority to get onto a K-9 squad. In my department 3 years is the minimum amount of time in a regular patrol squad until you're eligible for specialty squads (K-9, rifleman, SWAT) and even then it's competitive. You're better off getting a degree than having relevant training, and like I said earlier you need to make friends to rank up. That doesn't necessarily imply nepotism, but you need to show interest and shadow (ride along with) the squad you want to be a part of.

Not sure, haven't worked for a small department yet but the ones I tested for were just as miserable. When I did my initial physical test for county sheriff's office they were screaming at us like drill sergeants. You'll deal with that shit in the academy, but while testing you're still just a member of the community. What kind of assholes scream and yell at community members who just want to inquire about a position where they can help the rest if the community?

If you ask me, the hiring process for PD's shouldn't be a completely internal thing. I'm being completely non-selfish in saying that, because it does benefit us to be able to pick who's going to be our backup, but the fact of the matter is they're picking people who are tall or more athletic over people who are more intelligent or psychologically stable.

I don't care which branch or which MOS you get for the military, it's all boring as shit. Just a fucking daily grind for a mediocre pay off, unless you're a pilot or some shit.
The whole "brotherhood" and "honor & loyalty" shit isn't worth it.
I've known to many "brothers" who've regretted serving because they thought they would make a difference and get to have their "faithful" wives on the sidelines rooting for them. The latter of that being the shit the military puts you through if you're married. Plus you'll be dealing with men & women who will act like their life is hell, nothing good ever happens to them, and act like they didn't expect the stress. Let's not forget those who come back suicidal for the most trivial shit. Speaking from personal experience of course too.

You go to Basic and AIT with Active and Reserves as well. My first Company was split pretty evenly between Guard and Active, a few Reserve. I was injured during a training accident (pelvic stress fractures), and was transferred to another Company to make up the training I missed.

That 2nd Company was mostly Active, and a few people actually made fun of me. Thankfully only suffered minor rectal hemorrhaging and was able to graduate with them.
