The m/34's OK; I keep meaning to get an earlier pattern sling for it but either they're too expensive or they sell out quickly. It's WAAAY post-war production.

Not hard to find them with dust covers, but hard to find with matching dust covers. My DC has no serial number remaining (either defaced by damage or possible an un-numbered armorer's replacement) so I assume it doesn't match.

If it's original condition for that money then it's a steal and you should straight up offer him more for it. If it's sporterized then it's probably more than you'd really want to pay.

Krag ammo is really expensive, so prepare your wallet or prepare to reload.

Commercially available 6.5 is too hot for Krags. It's a hand load only proposition.

Wrong. PPU runs perfectly fine in them. Ask me how I know.

You're correct when it comes to commercial hunting loads meant for Tikkas and Blasers like those done by Nosler and Lapua.

Playing with fire chief. It's your gun and your face but PPU is about 43kpsi and the max safe range for a Norwegian Krag is 40.5kpsi.

Since I just got a new member of the family, I though I might as well take a photo of them together I guess I'm not doing bad for 22. Sorry for the bad lighting, I tried to edit it some to make it look better.

Guns from top down:
Gew 88/05//35 (got on Monday)
DWM 1895 Chilean (1897 date)
Izhevsk 1943 M91/30
Yugo M48
Yugo M57 Tokarev
Izhevsk 1943 Nagant Revolver

Bayonets from left to right:
Swede M96
M1891 6.5 Carcano
AK (Bulgarian/Romanian)
P1907 (April,1918 date)

>when you base your next milsurp purchase on what bayonets you have.

What should I get next?
>>
>>34664304
I actually just got back from the range with it.

So, overall it does really well, though the pistol I'm comparing it to is the one it replaced in my collection and in Poland itself (P-64)

Recoil is much improved, mostly because of the added weight and thicker grips (Which are actually really nice when you get them tightened down enough that they don't move)

Trigger is really improved as well, the double action is about half the weight of the P-64's and the single action is really nice and crisp at around four pounds.

Mag release is also improved, mags drop free and the paddle release is very large and positive.

My biggest complaiunt seems to be that it's a VERY fragile pistol. The metal they used when they stamped it out is very soft, and even light bumps against a harder material, or using the slide release for that matter, take small chips out of the metal. I'm not sure if it's just my particular one or not, but it would explain to me why it's a $200 handgun with excellent features.

Just picked up my first SKS, a cosmoline coated Yugo from my lgs for $425. Price seem about right? It is a no-fun state.

Also what drew me to it was pic related, seems to be a bunch of what I guess to be last names.
Does that normally drive people away from purchases or towards them?

OP here, it's super rare. There are I think less than 5 in the USA and around 60 in Canada. They made 1500 of them in 1943 as a test of the Semin bayonet system which was later added to the M38 carbine to make the M44. They recently turned up at a German importer who got them from an anonymous Eastern European Government (Ukraine probably).

My 2 pics there are the M95/30s, I only have a sling for one of them. It isn't that bad. As far as I understand, the /30's were intended to be used for cavalry, and thus the sling placement makes more sense while slung on horseback. My only gripe it the front sight post is sharp as fuck.

So actually, not that bad. I only use it as a backpacking gun, hence the shitty paint job. Pretty light and holds 2 10 round mags in the buttstock. IMO the integral bipod sucks and I don't use it but the irons ain't bad. Recoil is fine, and actually fairly accurate. Also folds in half, so also handy for backpacking.

I've seen the PLR-16 and don't get it at all desu.

>>34671319
Eh I picked them up because they were pretty cheap and I though straight pulls were neat. Ammo is basically online only. Recoil fucking sucks, but it's fun from time to time. I think there are better rifles but they're fun for a collection. No matter what, the action will stick.

I pour boiling water down the bore of all my milsurp purchases, it really helps remove any cosmoline and I find it loosens any other fouling inside. After pushing a dry patch through I spray that shit down liberally with WD-40 (Water-Displacement-40) and let it sit for a few minutes. For all other cosmo removal I use acetone on metal and don't bother for the stock.

When you shoot the amount of black powder I do, hot water isn't scary anymore.

OP here, if the stock is original Russian, it's probably Arctic Birch. You can achieve the same look by using garnet shellac diluted which is available at any hardware store.

That being said, the finish on my Finnish captured rifle is 100% original so you'll have to make a value judgement on if the rifle you're getting has the original finish or not.

You can remove splotches and such by thoroughly degreasing the wood and very lightly sanding. I'd advise against chemically stripping the wood. Use the sun and a garbage bag. Once the desired stock base is achieved put a few thin even coats of the garnet shellac on.

The French infantry doctrine was to carry the magazine full with nothing in the chamber. If the rifle had a magazine cutoff it was engaged. The idea was to single load cartridges to preserve ammunition whilst keeping the magazine in reserve.
>>
>>34677911
As far as I'm aware that kind of patina is formed through exposure to air. You could try putting them in a pressurized container full of pure oxygen...

If the receiver has an [SA] or a B on it, it is 100% Finnish capture. Post a pic of the receiver markings and we'll take a look.

An ex dragoon could easily be Finnish captured. The ex dragoons and 91/30s were only available to be captured during the Winter War and Continuation War.

From the picture, your stock finish looks original. I'd leave it alone. It's a mid WW2 stock so definitely a depot replacement of some sort.
>>
>>34679920

Damn.

I paid almost $600 for mine with some ammo, chargers and reloading dies.
>>
>>34679982
considering ammo is like 60 cents a round and chargers are like 15 bucks a piece thats probably alright. also depends on quality and condition, nicer = worth more
>>
>>34680004

I'd say it's "K31" condition.

Perfect bore, good receiver, semi-fucked stock.

6 chargers, 36 rounds, 20 once fired brass and reloading dies.

>>
>>34680312
Not anymore we don't. They're all gone with no more coming in for the forseeable future. The only thing we have left are SKSs and once the Russian ones run out (which is coming soon) it'll be Chinese only.

I'd rather have $400 Lee Enfields again and Yugo Mausers for cheap not to mention laws that at least lube you up before fucking your asshole. Our Gov. enjoys our crying when they go in dry.
>>
>>34680441

Come on down here then, bring an SVT and trade it for an Enfield and a Yugo Mauser and you'll get enough money to pay for the gas.

Do it in a red state and no one needs to know.
>>
>>34680479
I'd rather trade it for Reichsrevolvers and Chamelot Delvignes that I could take home and buy a new car with. Even a few Bodeos would do.

Antique handguns go for RETARDED amounts of money up here. $2000 for a pitted, re-nickel plated Belgian pocket pistol with a worn bore and loose lockup. Why? Because our laws are insane.

Receiver, barrel, bolt body, stock, handguard, floorplate, triggerguard (if numbered).

I know this feel. I'm working on getting my credit card balance down, but I've also got a bid in on GB and I'm eyeing a gun at a pawn shop. The one in the pawn shop isn't even on my list, but I'm still eyeing it.

I found a 1879 dated vetterli in good condition for $100 and a 1922 Lithgow smle with a pristine bore with a 1917 dated bayonet for $375 that I just couldn't pass up and they put me over. I somehow feel guilty but excited at the same time.
>>
>>34684475

Ain't nothing wrong with being a little over if you get what you want. Long as you still have money for food at the end of the day.

I'm thinking about buying a new(er) car next year, which means I'll probably have to cut way back on my shooty bits, which sucks.

So /msg/, I'm in the market for a K(*k, what should I expect to pay for one? I've heard that Russian and Yugo captured ones are cheaper, what would they run? Anything I should look out for?
>>
>>34690607
$400-500 for a Yugo capture, $700+ for a Russian capture.
Look for matching serials, most importantly a bolt matching the receiver, but for the most part they're mismatches. Russian captures can have the eagle stamps on the receiver, but the Yugos are generally sanitized.
Honestly if you just want a K98 and don't care about historical value then get the Yugo capture.
Also there's plenty of good other cheap 8mm short Mausers, such as the VZ24, Yugo M48 or M24, Spanish Mausers, the FN 24 and Chiang Kai Shek Rifles.
>>
>>34690732

I already have an M24/47, M48 and CKS rifle. I need a K98k because then I'll have one from each of the major contributors to WW2.

Personally I would argue that a Yugo-capture has as much, if not MORE history as a non-capture rifle, but I recognize that that's just my opinion. Not having the German markings doesn't mean the history is gone, it's just hidden.
>>
>>34690810
Nice, it seems like you've got your bases more than covered.
I agree with how you feel about Yugo captures. I think if you can personally enjoy something then the collector value doesn't matter as much, and besides any K98 is probably gonna increase in value over the years.
One thing I guess to look for on the Yugo K98 or any K98 really is early production features as well. Most notably the early style front barrel bands were milled and nicer looking, but it's mostly an aesthetic preference.
>>
>>34690904

Yeah, that's the nice thing about collecting for yourself instead of to try and turn a profit, you can get what YOU want, not what someone else will like.

Personally I'd love a Russian captured rifle, I've heard they crossed out the German markings and put their own on it, that's like getting a bonus history to the gun, I like ones that clearly have connections to more than one country (Like my SA stamped Carcano). I'd love to snag a Japanese Carcano too.

>>
>>34694196
No, I wish. Model 30 have a different profile at the back of the receiver. This one just had the sight protectors ground down, bubba took a drill to it and also cut the military barrel down to 24". It's a Remington from 1918, got flaming bombs and shit. Mix of Rem, Winchester and Eddystone parts.
