Spanish Mauser Question

From my understanding, the rifling in the J&G guns is borderline non-existent due to wear over the years. I my first Mauser was a Spanish model in 7.92x57. Price is only going to rise on surplus, and 7.62 NATO is breddy available. I don't know if it is "safer" per say, but it would be more shootable.

Is it one of the fr7 or fr8 models? Or is it the samco 1916 model? I've got one of the 308 converted samco guns, I like it, looks nice and is fun to shoot. I'm not sure about the fr models, but some people have concerns with the samco gun having a weak receiver for 308. I've shot around 120 rounds of Tula 308 through mine, the last one I shot had a full case head separation. I haven't shot it since, I'm gonna find some go/no go/field gauges before I fire it any more.

The one I bought from J&G is an original 7mm. It's in rough shape cosmetically but fine shape mechanically, including a more than acceptable bore. They can look really nice after a cleanup though - this guy did one and his looks great:

I thought you are not supposed to shoot .308 in the 1916, it was supposedly made for 7.62 cetme and 7.62x51 is considered a little hot for it, let alone a .308.

7.62NATO and .308WIN have almost the same maximum allowable chamber pressure (60,191PSI vs 62,000PSI). This also doesn't necessarily mean that all 7.62/.308 ammo is loaded to that limit at the factory, just what the cartridge case can safely tolerate. Also, the M1916s in 7.62 are chambered for NATO according to the Spanish manual for the rifle itself.
