Don't mind me, just waiting for this thread to dissolve into a Simo Hayha circlejerk.
>>34653743
The Finns did everything right, redeeming themselves of their dirty Mongolian heritage.
>>34653743
The Finns stayed mobile, and never let the Soviets bring their numbers to bear. Sting and run, sting and run, baiting the Soviets deeper and deeper into their backyard, and slowly breaking up the Soviet groups. Eventually, The Soviets found themselves fragmented into smaller groups, which were barely mobile. The Finns then just danced around on skis, in territory they knew like the back of their hands, and were able to encircle and destroy the isolated Soviet pockets.
>>34653935
Also a fuckton of Pervitin.
>>34653935
Or, to rephrase, this >>34653867. There's no reason the Finns should have won. The Soviets screwed the pooch on a biblical scale.
>>34653962
Well, they didn't "win". They lost territory in the war.
>>34653743
massacred bolshevic filth
>>34653962
>There's no reason the Finns should have won.
They didn't. They fought the Soviets to something of a standstill and negotiated a truce. Though in reality had Stavka decided to push even a couple weeks more, the defense would have fallen entirely and the war would have been decisively lost.
>>34654147
>>34654202

>good thing the Fin's didn't win...otherwise they might still have a country.
>>34653935
>and never let the Soviets bring their numbers to bear.
But that's wrong. The Karelian isthmus specifically allowed for this and due to a massive artillery and tank superiority the Soviets eventually broke through the lines and took Viipuri as the war ended and ceasefire was already in effect.
>>34654236
Finland didn't win. It was a stalemate ended in a treaty due to a definite strategic impossibility and severe attrition. A few more weeks and one more offensive would have broken the Finnish defence entirely. The road to the capital and rest of Finland was almost open.
>minor territorial concessions
A tenth of its territory and population. Though the latter were evacuated almost to a man.
>>34654236
>America wanted to preserve SV
>hammer NV to accept terms of surrender
>SV existed with the signing of the treaty

They were invaded by an enemy force that was in shambles. The finns couldve been armed by confetti and the russians would most likely lose similar amounts of manpower.
Finland didnt do great, Soviet union did extremely bad. There's a difference, although i do concede that the finns fought bravely.
>>34654554
>that was in shambles
Nigger what? The Finns were the ones in absolute shambles. The Soviets had well equipped full-strength armies with plentiful artillery and tanks, while some Finns didn't even have uniforms and had so little ammunition they couldn't even provide proper fire missions.

>>34654579
This is true, but the finns weren't (for the most part) the attacking force. Being the devensive element has some large benefits, such as logistics being more forgiving, AT guns can provide similar tasks of a tank, etc.
They also had a friendly neighbour in the south-west who didn't mind donating to their cause.
>>34654758
I dont know about that, Finland is a lot more prepared than they were during the winter war (but of course, so is everybody else).
>>34654758
>equipment is bad.
Guess how I know you know jack-shit about the conflict?
>>34654794
>AT guns can provide similar tasks of a tank, etc.
Partially, yes, but there was a lack even of AT guns. The military was extremely ill prepared because of communists and retarded politicians thinking there would be no war.
>They also had a friendly neighbour in the south-west who didn't mind donating to their cause.
The Krauts? They were the ones who sold Finland to the Soviets in the first place. Support only started in the Continuation War.
Of course if you're talking about the Swedes, then they did indeed offer some, albeit much needed logistical help.
>>34654820
Again, yes, the finns were extremely ill-prepared, but the Soviets were even more so, and they were the ones expected to show decisive initiative, which they were completely unable to do.
The swedes donated an enormous amount of material and support, and i think you'd be hard-pressed to argue that the finns couldve fought the war without it. Money and material is one thing (and was crucial), but the main thing that the swedes gave the Finns credit, which both allowed them to "buy" things from swedish manufacturing basically for free, and even things from other countries using sweden as a middleman.
>>34654898
>but the Soviets were even more so
No. The Soviets were very well prepared for war, but not specifically for Finland, while the Finns were well prepared for Finland, but very poorly for war.
>The swedes donated an enormous amount of material and support
>enormous
No. Enormous would have been taking part in the war itself, instead of staying neutral and profitting from it through sales and loans of old arms to the nation that is protecting them from the Soviet Union.
>>34654771
>but Sweden unofficially supported Finland
Sweden was very official about it. Never declared the USSR war, but instead declared itself a non-combatant, ie involved in the conflict. War materiel, money and humanitarian aid to the civilian population was sent over, along with volunteers to fight, and the air force setting up a volunteer air wing in Finland with a few bombers and a third of Sweden's fighters.
It's in the cold war you get the unofficial support. Like when Finland (only allowed a certain number of fighters due to the peace treaty after the continuation war) trained a lot more Draken pilots than they really had planes for, while the Swedish air force was keeping a bunch of Drakens they didn't use any more sitting in storage instead of being scrapped, despite not having nearly enough reserve pilots to make use of them.
>>34653743
VITTU SAATANA PERKELE!!!
Now that it is cleared. They dug in, and let the Soviets destroy themselves with inferior communication, and organization. They literally sent in wave after wave that would just freeze upright in the middle of the forests. Not to mention Finns using food pots as bait for entire divisions of starving conscripts.
>>34655003
>No. Enormous would have been taking part in the war itself, instead of staying neutral and profitting from it through sales and loans of old arms to the nation that is protecting them from the Soviet Union.
Probably not. The swedes had been decreasing their armed forces for decades and wouldn't have been very useful had they sent entire units, for a few reasons. Firstly, it would mean that the donation wouldnt be anywhere near the size it was, and swedes would focus on their own units instead. So they wouldnt be any more advanced than the regular finns, the finns would be in a much worse state materials-wise and they would lose their tap to the outside world.
And then we haven't even mentioned what's likely to happen should sweden officially enter the war against the USSR. Most likely, the brits go ahead with operation avon head; and if they don't, Germany invades Sweden. In any case, you're now in a situation where finns didnt get any materials, and your additional army units will very quickly be needed elsewhere.

Most of the pockets evolved sort of naturally due to the situations. Many of the pockets also survived until the end of the war, because Finns did not have enough manpower and artillery to break fortified positions that had enough supplies to hold on. Many pockets were also supplied from air.
