What oil do you use and why?

I personally like the Hickock45 method of blasting everything with ballistol, let it sit for a minute or five, then wipe clean.

Non toxic, protects wood and leather, doesnt harm plastic, disinfects cuts, smells like a comfy bowling alley, tastes ok too. What more could you want?
>>
>>34651940
I too use Ballistol, mostly because I live in a poorly ventilated apartment.
I only use it to clean and lube small stuff, though. Things like rails and lugs get Lucas Red 'n Sticky grease.
>>

>What oil do you use and why?
I use water

sea water is best when you're near the coast. its abundant and has the added effect of being able to clean out dirt and grime

Similar stuff to ballistol only without any smell. Much cheaper too here in Ausfagland

Hornady One Shot. Leaves a super slick dry film, damn near impossible to over lube with it.
Also, moly loaded grease on slide rails.

anyone here use 3 in one oil? Ive heard of people swearing by it for firearms, but im getting conflicting information online, some people say its great for super fine intricate shit like sewing machines. Other people say it attracts dirt and it gumms up like wd40.

Love the citronella smell though

It could lubricate really well but if it attracts dirt then avoid it.
>>
>>34651940
I use hoppes and remoil to clean i use some cheap gun cleaner spray and wipe the shit down good.
>>
>>34652161

this.

I own 2 CZs and 2 M1 action rifles. years of range use and my CZ slides aren't loose fitting, and well, the M1 calls for basically bearing grease anyways.

Everything else gets hoppes no 9 from the same bottle my dad handed down to me.

It's been posted before, but for those that will whine:

He just coated the washers in the given oil/grease and left the board outside for weeks in the rain and humidity
>>
whatever oil i have left over from the lawnmower, usually.

5w20 i think currently.
>>
>>34653646
This is why I like Eezox. Especially for safe queens I rarely shoot.

Plus, being a dry lube, it's seemingly ideal for carry.
PITA to convert from one product to another, so I've been switching a couple guns at a time.
>>
>>34653646
>in the rain

kinda ruins the whole thing dont you think?

who gets their gun wet and doesn't make sure it's dry by the time they're done and storing it?
>>
>>34653679
It's more the point that they were exposed to moisture. I couldn't tell you how much rain they got, or if it was even rain by what most of us would consider it. I didn't conduct the test, just know what the guy said about it. Regardless, it's clear that some oils performed exactly as intended while others did not
>>
>>34652056
Yes this is true. For those that don't live near the coast, you can make "sea water" at home by mixing water and salt together, then shaking.
>>
>>34651940
FMO-350-AW and SFL-0 grease.

Better let motorcrossers know too. Or anyone who rides anything for sport.
>>
>>34654196
I'm sorry, I don't remember slathering myself in motor oil or ATF before riding my motorcycle.
>>
would this hilti nail gun lube spray work on a firearm?
>>
>>34653646
Actually, I believe he also sprayed it with concentrated salt water daily as well.
>>
>>34653152
>hoppes no 9

Absolutely the worst thing you can use other than sea water. Way too harsh to be using on guns, it's been known to strip paint.
>>
>>34651940
I use ballistol as well.

Really cheap and easily accessible where I live, non-toxic, works on literally everything from guns through knives to hinges, good for cleaning black powder guns, gets the job done.
>>
I've got a batch of Ed's Red with lanolin that I mixed up to use as a solvent. I just use Hoppes oil and Pro Shot grease for lubrication where appropriate.
>>
Remoil for pistols, just because I've got a fuckton of it and don't want to throw it away.
Ballistol for rifles. When the Remoil runs out, ballistol for pistols, too.

If you need a grease, Mobil 1 synthetic. It's a red grease. Works wonders on guns, and it's easy to tell when you need more: the red goes away.

Slip2000 for actions. Ballistol for everything else.

Works great.
>>
>>34651940
I accidentally got a drop of Ballistol in my eye yesterday and it hurt like a mother fucker. I rinsed my eye out for a while right after, and it's fine now, but wow did that ever hurt.

While I like it for my BP pistol, I think it sucks as a rust preventive, because a couple of my rifles started developing rust in the bores after being stored having lined the bore with Ballistol. I've since switched to grease.
>>
>people buying gun specific lubricants
LOL.
>>
>>34656317
This is what I do and have great results. I also use aeroshell 6 or grease.
>>
non chlorinated brake cleaner to clean, breakfree clp to lube
>>
>>34651940
WD-40 to remove cosmoline, shipping oil, anti rust thing
Ballistol for cleaning (love the smell)
Ballistol for lubricating weapons I use often (like my CZ-SP01
I have a bottle of FP-10 I use for weapons I don't shoot often (bolt actions mostly) and the AR15 (one drop on the gas rings on the bolt and two drops on the bolt carrier)
oil WILL catch dirt and carbon. Use sparingly if you don't want to clean often.
Some people at the range just dump their weapons in motor oil but they clean all the oil after each session and replace it with clean oil, they learned to do that in the army.
>>
>>34651940
I mostly shoot black powder rifles and revolvers.

For those, I use soap and boiling water to clean, but I've used everything from Bore Butter to Ballistol to WD-40 to Vaseline as a lube/protectant. Dozens of guns over 25 years, never any problems with rust, performance, or bore pitting.

Then again, black powder is hell on steel, so it's really the soap and water treatment that's most critical. After that, it's just the same rust prevention you'd use for any tool. For my modern guns, I use whatever commercial CLP is on sale and wipe down with RemWipes between handlings.
>>
>>34651940
ballistol doesnt do shit to dissolve copper fouling or heavy lead or crusted carbon. its good for people who already have a clean gun and barely shoot a box of rounds through it and want the powder residue cleaned up. its good for black powder shooters who cant have petroleum products in their barrel. but its not really a great solvent. its a decent protective oil though
>>
>>34656617
shooting BP is one of the most gourmet activity : I use a mix of bee wax, duck grease and olive oil to lubricate balls and clean my gun by boiling them in a big casserole.
>>
>ballistol
>smelling good

It literally smells like a rank fart
>>
>>34651988
Second this. Seawater has a little known property that allows it to clean out copper fouling while leaving behind a comfy protective saline lubricant.
>>
>>34653646
Nigga if I get my guns wet I make sure they're clean and dry before I put em away!
>>
>>34656476
Well, I'd rather spend 6 dollars on an 8 oz bottle of gun lube than 30 dollars on 4 quarts of anything else, because I'm really not sweating the 80 or so cents im saving per oz when even 8 oz lasts me months
>>
>>34656794
As anyone should. But once again, the test wasn't supposed to simulate ideal conditions. It was supposed to test the effectiveness of the oil in adverse conditions. Use whatever you want, man. Hell, anyone that frequents these threads knows that's what people will do anyway. Under the conditions most people keep their shit, you don't need much of anything anyway. It still shows what works best though
