totally dependent on environment and season, no camo is best camo. Go watch some of brent0331's videos on youtube, plethora of different camos and their effectiveness in different wooded environments.

Multi terrain also implies multi season, even though that will obviously be less effective.
Brent's vids don't take into account night-vision resistance.

Alpenflage is excellent in places that tend to have lots of leaves on the ground, or where there is little green foliage on the ground.
Some other great camos can be sourced from Finland, Sweden, Norway, and Germany. Some meh camos are DPM, Belgian Jigsaw, French CCE, and other camos that have too dark colours in them. Honestly, you just have to realize the terrain in your backyard and find a uniform to go with it.

No, it is -my understanding- that the farther you see the pattern, the more it merges into a single color, and that makes it stand up more to NV, so the pattern needs to adress that, and that is the reason for black stripes like in Woodland or Alpenflage.

>>34652124
Yes, but do you think it is still the best in that regard, or multicam-like pattern are better since then? Alpenflage looks to dark for anything else than inside a shady wooden place.

>>34652446
The worst*
I love AridFlecktarn (pic related), but being a commercial pattern, I am not sure about its NV capabilities.

That might be so in the past, but in modern camouflage it's in fact a coating.

Based on the old USMC duck hunter.

Auscam is great stuff in the scrub, especially when well worn and faded.

Pic related is quick test I did today wit what I have. Overall, multicam was the best except always a bit too bright, CCE came second, Flecktarn was not that bad but always too dark, the others were unefficient, particularly digital (even on a sand/rock surface).
>>
>>34651589
As far as universal patterns go, Multicam and Auscam can actually hold up in almost environment.

As far as specific environments go, Alpenflage is fucking great stuff for the mountains and it holds up for almost all seasons there, especially for a group, where it would appear as a few patches without snow cover, rather than one oddly human sized patch.
>>
>>34652755
Works fantastic in much of southern Idaho. Sagebrush and dry grass is basically UCP and it only gets better the drier it gets. Just stay away from the rivers/greenery and you're good. Also matches some tree barks pretty well.

If I had to pick a best camo I'd go with A-TACS AU or FG. When I used to airshit I damn near stepped on a guy wearing that shit. Marpat and multicam are amazing too.
>>
>>34653018
I have actually seen it work innawoods.

It was late fall and sperg nat guard friend insisted on wearing his uniform. He strolled off to take a piss and I didn't realize he was back until he was less than 10 feet from me.

I don't know what made it work, but it just did. He was fucking invisible in it. Maybe they only activate the invisibility for active issue equipment.

I've made UCP work in some trees once myself but most places we went airshitting were garbage for UCP with nothing but massive amounts of greenery. Hugged a tree and a hardcore player with his fancy sniper couldn't see me aside from the stream of BBs flying at his general direction. Lighter tree bark and dry wood does amazing things. He also probably learned to be quiet as fuck. I still need to go out innadesert and take pictures standing, kneeling, and prone in my airshit setup. Hopefully going to use it for hunting bambi sometime this year.

It's more likely than you think

Many parts of Europe (including the "low" parts of Switzerland) are only sporadically snowy in the winter. A red & brown dominant pattern is ideal for the conditions, as you have lots of dead grass and fallen leaves all over the place. The red adds contrast without standing out much.

Michigander here, multicam is actually a pretty ideal pattern for winter around here (Coupled with a nice whiteish winter poncho, of course) Pretty much perfect for early spring.

Leaves lose their color pretty fast after they've been on the ground for ~a month. You'd stick out pretty bad walking around in Alpenflage in winter. But yeah maybe winter in Northern Italy or Coratia would work pretty well with it. Cannot see it being worth a shit in any area that gets significant snowfall.

>>Why? Do deer perceive human outlines differently than people do?

That`s one of the reasons. Animals DO have different vision from humans and different reflexes. In addition, military cammo is more or less multi-terrain and designed not only to conceal stationary position, but also break shilouette while you move. That means that in specific terrain and without movement, it will allways loose to hunter cammo, made specially for this terrain.

Just to make sure that you understand. "From afar", the eye catches mostly the motion, not the color difference. That means, that you can be perfectly camouflaged with single-color BDU (Like Jews still use), as long as you are being still. And use the landscape, damn it. Multi-colored patterns are usefull at shot to medium range. And digital flora is pretty much ok at that.

Nature's figured that shit out hundreds and thousands of years ago.

If you want to find out what good camo looks like, just look for anything that gets hunted by raptors and other birds. They have better vision than we do, see in color, and hunt in the same environments we're trying to stay hidden in. The key to good camo isn't some stupid fucking computer "dot" design, it's simply looking at what nature has already made that works.

Pic related: fence lizards get hunted by everything, and yet they're all over the place in the east. Snakes, like rattlers and Fer De Lance, are both prime game for raptors like red tail hawks when they're young. There's countless examples in nature to choose from that are all better than the shit any given military uses.

Camo based on toads. But you're right, no animal in nature that is camouflaged uses the color green for some reason, just varying shades of brown. This is likely due to camo patterns having to hide someone in the woods while also standing out on the clothing rack.

Personal experience with both. Simply checking out places with your own eyes and realizing that the colors of jgsdf's camo match more green places unlike flecktarn which is suited for a dark forest like those in Germany. Realization that it's easier for a lighter color to get darker than for a darker color to get lighter to match your environment.

Gents,
Does any uniform camouflage use counter shading?

In most images of soldiers standing they seem to be kinda skylined against the lighter background. Would it make sense to have the helmet be a lighter shade progressively getting darker to the pant legs? Doesn't have to be an insane gradient but at least some? Also, would having the armpit/knee/crotch area a bit lighter also counter shadows in those areas?

i see what you're tying to do but that's not a good way to see how effective camo is. it's more than just pattern and color, you have to see how light and perspective work against it.

you might like pencott greenzone, i think it takes some ideas from natural camouflage and does a pretty good job
>>
>>34688508
Is that the camo that was very effective when it was covered by a fallen tree trunk?

>Hunting in military cammo is mostly as stupid, as going to war in hunters cammo.

US Navy SEALs have been using "Mossy Oak" civvie hunting pattern BDUs and web gear for 10+ years now, for environments where it is useful.

https://geardoshit.wordpress.com/2011/06/10/civvy-hunting-camo-in-afghanistan/

There's nothing magical about a camouflage pattern that makes it "only for fooling deer" or "only for fooling people."

Crypsis, mimesis, disruption. Hide from sight by imitating commonplace things in the environment, or by breaking up the distinctive outline with contrasting colors--or both at once.
>>
>>34687433
French "CCE" is basically US M81 Woodland roughly doubled in all dimensions, to break up outlines at greater distances, with larger black patches.

Background blending camo is for COWARDS.

The most effective camo is made of flamboyant aesthetic colors, in order to lower the enemy morale and drive them from the field with your bravery and fashion sense.

Why so militaries, especially the American military, switch up its camo multiple times every decade and not just keep what actually works?

The current army one is a total God damn mess, a downgrade from what they had before. Why was it changed when the old one was good?

Pic related, it's fucking terrible

>>
>>34696183
You forgot the Navy's AOR2. That stuff is amazing in woodland environments.
>>
>>34696183
Because for some reason DOD is retarded and lets different branches have autonomy on stuff like this. So when USMC took the CADPAT and changed the colors, the army said "hey cool send us the pattern so we can use it too!" Then USMC sperged out and said it was their copyrighted design and said no one else can use it.
