Karl has a wonderfully abrasive personality. For some reason he really seems to hate the forward assist without even knowing how it works. Pic related. The funny thing is that the forward assist can engage the BCG cutouts as soon as the bolt contacts a round in the magazine.

They seem to get a lot of interesting and somewhat unique topics on point and seem to just completely fall flat when bringing up others. I like how they are using red dots on pistols and trying it out. The seem to really hate the forward assist, though.
>>
>>34643006
Karl is a fucking tryhard idiot. This is well established. If he didn't have Ian giving him a shred of legitimacy he would be a worse joke on /k/ than yankeemarshal or nutnfancy.
>>
oh, so THIS is the reason for the recent wave of morons saying the assist causes jams/jams to become worse. good to know.

In another thread i said I could "quietly" chamber a round by releasing the bolt slowly using the charging handle and then using the forward assist to put it into battery and some fucknut replied
>enjoy your jam
What the fuck, how the fuck do you jam your rifle by loading the first round using the forward assist?
>>
>>34643212
You don't need a pistol grip either
>>
>>34643006
Honestly didn't seem that abrasive to me...
>>
>>34643212
A forward assist can come in handy but is rarely more good than bad. Stoner himself disliked that they implemented a forward assist, he said that it will mess your shit up and it was a bad and temporary problem to something that needs your attention.
>>
>>34643212
I tend to agree, but that's not the point.

My point is that he's an insecure little crybitch who can't even let in any opinions that don't lick his taint.

Forward assist is useful for quietly chambering a round. Many law enforcement agencies require long guns to be carried without a round in the chamber.
>>
>>34643777
Just push your thumb into the cut out into the bolt. It's that simple
>>
>>34643502

I was really enjoying his old west content and historic videos, but a lot of Karl's content now is getting to be political preaching and similar rambling. The mass of competition videos is also getting old.

Ian is still great, even on Inrange TV. I'm supporting both Forgotten Weapons and Inrange on Patreon right now, but I'm considering dropping Inrange unless the content changes up.
>>
>>34643788
The FA is still faster and easier. I didn't claim it's necessary for that, just useful.
>>
>>34643817
Yea this is true but only by a margin. By and large I do agree with Karl that's it's a pointless addition. It can be used but by and large it's not really solving anything that needed solved
>>
>>34643834
In all fairness, that's the only thing I can think I've ever used it for in years of shooting the platform.
That and administrative loading where for some reason or another I ended up riding the charging handle forwards (this was more when I was very new to the platform).
>>
>>34643843
IVe used it on my other ar but on the one I've posted I've just used the bolt divit instead and it worked just fine

>>
>>34643816
all good points. I've only seen the tip of the iceberg of his political stuff and decided to basically stop watching/ignoring him because of that. What are some examples of his current behaviour in that vein? I do like the competition videos but could imagine them getting a bit samey if you watched every one of them. I like how they take not-so-obvious guns/setups in them sometimes, but haven't watched any in a few months. Forgotten weapons is definitely a youtube channel worth supporting. Are they on that non-youtube alternative gun website? I haven't been there in a wee while.
>>
>>34643843
I was going to say over the years of shooting M16A2's, M4's, M4A1',s and various personally owned AR-15's, but then I cut it down to that.
>>
>>34643748
>>34643006

I like Karl, but he changed A LOT after that fucking Pat Mac video he and Ian did. All he seems to give a shit about now is pretending to be a soldier and playing operator in preparation for a red dawn scenario that'll never happen.
>>
>>34643695
That is something he legitimately should be upset by though.

>almost exclusively videos of two guys running around with suped up ARs, lately
>mfw ARs are the most boring fucking gun to watch shoot ever
>millions of fucking channels will show you a video about why they think their AR is the best
>even more channels will show themselves shooting them

InRange is boring as fuck to watch for the last few months, at least. I can learn an interesting thing or two watching a guy struggle with a G43 rifle in a 2 gun, but watching people sperg out about what AR they think is the most OPER8OR is the most boring gun content I can imagine.
>>
>>34644118
Honestly the best videos they ever did were the ones with the souped-up FG42. That was genuinely cool stuff, whereas I don't give a shit about fancy schmancy ARs, and what a gun channel says about net neutrality.
>>
>>34644178
It's not even what the channel has to say about net neutrality, it's what Karl has to say.

Ian stays out of it luckily, so I don't have to care about whatever stupid political opinions he has. The only remotely political video I've ever seen him make was a short video advertising how during a certain time period one of the auction houses he films at was matching donations to the NRA.
>>
>>34643236
I think another issue is that you can just completely lock up your gun if you fire with the forward assist pressed in. This means jack shit to me, but I can see some 11b trying to shoot left handed around a corner, bracing his rifle against the wall, and pressing his FA without realizing it.
>>
>>34644178
The CETME build was also really cool.

Hopefully they'll return to running 2 gun with old weapons because that stuff was really cool and gave you an idea of what it was like to fight with those weapons.
>>
>>34644178
I kinda think InRange became less about cool guns and talking about them, and more "what does Karl think is important today?".

>>34643006
The forward assist has one key purpose, ratcheting the bolt closed when in does not fully go into battery. On an AK this can be done by simply slapping the milled in charging handle forward, however the AR's charging handle design requires the forward assist. That is all the forward assist is, a pseudo charging handle slap. It doesn't "cause more jams" or "make jams worse" all it does is slap the bolt closed. If you try and slap the bolt closed on a deformed round (in any gun) you're likely to cause a jam. If you already have a jam and try and slap the bolt closed (in any gun) you're going to make it worse. The misinformation about the forward assist comes from people who don't understand it's function. It doesn't clear jams, it doesn't make them worse, it just slaps home the bolt, it's up to the user to decide when to appropriately use such a function.
>>

The reason long guns are left unchambered is because (depending on the area/the officers job) they can go weeks or even months without getting deployed.
Many rifle racks in police cares are oriented with the rifles butt down when locked into place. This combined with a free floating firing pin on an AR could potentially mean a hole in the roof if you hit a bump hard enough.

I seriously do not see a need for a forward assist.

If you cant accomplish closing the chamber by pressing on the bolt scallop then you ought not to try to smash it home with an FA.

>>34647451
I actually own an AR, so let me tell you why you're just being stupid.

The FA button is infinitely more convenient. It allows the shooter to not have to move his shooting hand, but rather just use his thumb to lightly press. His hand still wraps around the grip, his finger can still be at the ready.

The BCG will get hot after any extended period of shooting. This is simple thermodynamics. It will easily get hot to the touch, for the exact same reason a gas block will.

To counteract this, you say the shooter should just wear gloves. You've already admitted your scallop pushing is dumb with this alone.

The FA button will provide more mechanical force than a thumb flopping around in a shallow scallop and pressing forward.

Really, your method offers no advantages whatsoever. It's clunky, puts the user's thumb at risk, slower, and not as proficient at the one thing it's meant to do.
>>
>>34647602
Sometimes rounds can be stubborn unseating from a mag. These can easily require quite a bit of force. Fortunately, a harmless button right next to your thumb is ready and waiting for a simple press to rectify this issue.
>>
>>34647645
>somebody who actually owns an ar15

>you cant push that hard anyway

> b but muh tacticool super fast hand positioning.
Not enough difference to matter.
>bbbut muuh burns
You will not burn your hands, the carrier will not get hot enough to burn you.

Maybe if youre rifle has a failure to feed you should instect it after a quick press on the carrier.

>b but the gloves, you lose!
Even if the carrier gets hot enough to burn you, which it wont, you should have gloves anyway.
>>
>>34647450

>everybody in here hating on the forward assist

Has nobody here ever had dirty locking lugs? Sometimes I want to quietly chamber a round without the 107decibel clack. Sometimes my gun is dirty. Foward assist solves this.

I swear half the people on /k/ are E.Stoner-worshiping nogunz. Or if they have an AR, they go to a clean gun range and shoot 60 rounds before autistically cleaning it, and repeat.
>>

Hi there!

You seem to have made a bit of a mistake in your post. Luckily, the users of 4chan are always willing to help you clear this problem right up! You appear to have used a tripcode when posting, but your identity has nothing at all to do with the conversation! Whoops! You should always remember to stop using your tripcode when the thread it was used for is gone, unless another one is started! Posting with a tripcode when it isn't necessary is poor form. You should always try to post anonymously, unless your identity is absolutely vital to the post that you're making!

I saw Karl at a grocery store in Arizona yesterday. I told him how cool it was to meet him in person, but I didn’t want to be a douche and bother him and ask him for photos or anything.

He said, “Oh, like you’re doing now?”

I was taken aback, and all I could say was “Huh?” but he kept cutting me off and going “huh? huh? huh?” and closing his hand shut in front of my face. I walked away and continued with my shopping, and I heard him chuckle as I walked off. When I came to pay for my stuff up front I saw him trying to walk out the doors with like fifteen Scho-Ka-Kola's in his hands without paying.

The girl at the counter was very nice about it and professional, and was like “Sir, you need to pay for those first.” At first he kept pretending to be tired and not hear her, but eventually turned back around and brought them to the counter.

When she took one of the tins and started scanning it multiple times, he stopped her and told her to scan them each individually “to prevent any electrical infetterence,” and then turned around and winked at me. I don’t even think that’s a word. After she scanned each tin and put them in a bag and started to say the price, he kept interrupting her by yawning really loudly.

If he keeps it the same, it's forever a really stupid caricature.

He says it "isn't religion" for "either of us", which sounds a lot like backpedaling. Truth is, I never would have thought much one way the other except for his shit-fits about them and the ensuing fervor with which people took sides.

Forward assist has helped me a few times. Usually it isn't necessary, but there are times when it absolutely is; it sort of seems like a good idea and seems just...right for an AR platform to have one.

If it weren't for Karl acting like a spasmodic jerk about it and then (perhaps) realizing he sounded like a complete dipshit and trying the "fine, whatever, it's cool, not a big thing, just a waste of time, let's move on" tack, I doubt many people would have even though to give a tenth of a shit. Just like I don't care about the relative curvature of the lateral shroud on my front sight post, nor whether my Safe/Fire switch has two stacked ridges or three. But I suppose there are buttheads who make their entire career or attract followers over such baloney. Heck, weird religious cults have been doing it for years. It just takes a certain type of cocksure personality and gullible morons to parrot the party line.

Oh, Karl, thee of the wondrously cropped hair, we pray to thee, that we may not be troubled by forward assists, and may always know thy bidding as the infallible Truth. Amen.

My impression is that Karl feels he got his rifle perfect the first time and it doesn't need any more development, and so they're focusing on fixing Ian's rifle.
>>
>>34643006
He's right though. The only time i ever used a forward assist was then my buffer tower got bent and the friction of the bcg in the buffer tube led to ftfs.
Besides broken recievers and replacing gun oil with fucking molasses there's no time you'll ever use the FA.
>>
>>34658600
Consider the following situation: You have damaged the charging handle slot in the receiver, squeezing it tight on the bar. As such it takes a lot more force to pull it back, and when you let it go, the spring force on the bolt has to work against that friction too. This reduces the closing velocity and causes the bolt to fail to get into battery completely, though the actual operating mechanic of the rifle is fine, it's just that charging handle slot issue, so you push the FA with your chin and it's all good

I don't see how saving a tiny amount of weight, especially in the back of the rifle, is worth never having the ability to use collapsible stocks.

Neither of them were in the military, and neither have I, but as I understand it lots of dudes collapse the stock some of the way since their body armor gets in the way. Stoner was designing a gun for the military, so I imagine he'd cater to that more than anything else.
